After Cleveland beat Pittsburgh 27-24 on October 1, 2026, Browns defensive end Jared Verse declared, “This ain’t the old Browns.” He said the team had “new swag,” was more aggressive, and intended to make the city “rock.” It was a confident message after a rivalry win—not proof that Cleveland’s identity or results have permanently changed.
What Verse said
NFL.com reported on October 2 that Verse made the remarks via the Browns’ official team transcript. His full quoted statement was: “This ain’t the old Browns,” defensive end Jared Verse said via the team’s official transcript. “We’ve got new swag. We’re a lot more aggressive, a lot more, you know, getting after it. This is something different here. We’re going to make this whole city rock.”
The available report does not include the question that prompted his answer or the rest of the exchange. Verse’s words are best read as a player’s postgame description of how the team wants to play, rather than as an independently measured claim about Cleveland’s long-term transformation.

According to theScore’s recap, Cleveland led 21-10 entering the fourth quarter before Pittsburgh rallied to tie the game at 24. TheScore reports that quarterback Deshaun Watson led a late drive into Pittsburgh territory, took a sack, and then kicker Andre Szmyt made a 56-yard field goal with 10 seconds left—the longest of his career, according to that report.
The result behind the message
The win left Cleveland 3-1, according to the NFL’s Week 4 schedule. The official score confirms the immediate result; it does not establish whether this team will sustain a different style or achieve different results over the season. Verse’s “new swag” line is a declaration of confidence, not a forecast.

NFL.com’s October 2 story gives the result as 27-24 in its opening, but later refers to a “27-14 victory.” The league game center and schedule both list 27-24, so 27-14 appears to be an error in that story.
