The Blues won 4-0 at American Airlines Center; Oettinger made 20 saves, according to the NHL recap.
Oettinger was confirmed as the starter
Before the game, CBS Sports/RotoWire reported that Oettinger was first off the ice at Dallas’s morning skate and that a lower-body injury from preseason had not kept him from being available for the opener. That report did not provide a diagnosis or further medical detail. The game has since been played, and the NHL recap confirms Oettinger appeared in goal.
The season opener was Dallas’s home game against St. Louis on Friday, Oct. 2, at American Airlines Center. Dallas’s initial 2026-27 roster listed Oettinger and Casey DeSmith as its two goaltenders; that roster listing alone does not establish a fixed starter order.
What happened in the game
St. Louis shut out Dallas 4-0. Oettinger stopped 20 shots, while Blues goaltender Joel Hofer made 25 saves. Afterward, Stars coach Glen Gulutzan said, “At the end of the day, they got to their game quicker than we did and they stayed with it,” in the NHL’s Oct. 3 recap.

Oettinger’s previous-season numbers
For context—not as a projection for 2026-27—Oettinger finished the 2025-26 regular season 35-12-6 with a 2.59 goals-against average, a .899 save percentage and four shutouts in 54 games, according to the Dallas Stars’ profile. The team described .899 as the lowest save percentage of his career to that point. Oettinger said of the prior season, “I don’t feel like I accomplished any of my goals,” in the profile.
DeSmith’s 2025-26 regular-season record was 15-8-6, with a 2.43 goals-against average and .907 save percentage, according to the same team profile. Those historical statistics describe the previous season; they do not determine who will start subsequent games. General manager Jim Nill said Oettinger needed to be “more consistent” in the July 27, 2026 profile.
