As of 4 October 2026, Apple lists Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards for Apple Pay in India. A Visa or Mastercard from another bank—or an Axis debit, prepaid, or other card—should be treated as not currently listed, not assumed compatible. Eligibility can change, so check Apple’s current India issuer list and confirm your exact card with Axis before relying on it.
Which Indian bank cards does Apple currently list?
Apple announced Apple Pay in India on 30 September 2026. The India issuer listing reviewed on 4 October 2026 names Axis Bank and specifies Visa and Mastercard credit cards. Apple says it will update its list as additional banks are added, so this is a dated snapshot rather than a permanent eligibility rule. Apple’s India launch announcement and its India banks and issuers page are the places to check for changes.

Being issued by a participating bank is not a guarantee: Apple cautions that some cards from participating banks may not be supported. A Visa or Mastercard logo alone does not establish Apple Pay eligibility. Apple’s Asia-Pacific participating banks and issuers guidance likewise advises checking issuer and card support.
How to check whether your exact card will work
- Check the issuing bank. For India, the Apple list reviewed on 4 October 2026 names Axis Bank.
- Check the network. The listed Axis card networks are Visa and Mastercard.
- Check the card product. The listing specifies credit cards, not every card type. Do not infer eligibility for debit, prepaid, co-branded, or other products from the issuer or network name.
- Confirm with Axis or try Wallet setup. Apple says issuer verification may be required. If the card is rejected or does not appear eligible, contact the issuer about that specific card. Apple’s Apple Pay setup instructions cover the supported-card requirement and verification.
What devices and software are required in India?
Apple’s India launch requirements are an iPhone XR or later running iOS 18 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 6 or later running watchOS 11 or later and paired with an iPhone XR or later. Apple’s launch announcement also says iPad is supported in India; it described Mac support as coming soon, so do not assume Mac availability from that announcement alone. Device compatibility is separate from whether the issuer supports the exact card.

How to add an eligible card and pay
Add the card
Apple says an eligible Axis card can be added through the latest Axis Bank app. On iPhone, you can also open Wallet, tap the plus or add-card control, then follow the on-screen prompts. The bank may ask you to verify the card. If setup fails, ask the issuer whether that exact card is enabled for Apple Pay rather than assuming that every card from a listed bank is supported.
Pay in a shop, app, or on the web
For an in-store purchase, double-click the iPhone’s side button or Home button, authenticate if prompted, then hold the top of the iPhone near a contactless reader. On Apple Watch, double-click the side button and hold the display near the reader. Apple says app and web purchases are also supported in India. A supported card still depends on the merchant accepting the relevant payment method and on issuer approval. See Apple’s countries and regions support information for availability details.

Security, fees, and internet connection
Apple says the physical card number is not stored on the device or Apple servers and is not shared with merchants. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is encrypted and stored in the device’s Secure Element. Apple also says it does not retain transaction information that can be tied back to the user. These are Apple’s stated privacy and security practices in its launch announcement.
Apple says it charges users no fee for Apple Pay purchases; your card issuer may still apply its usual card fees. Apple also says in-store iPhone and Apple Watch purchases can work without Wi-Fi or cellular service. Transaction history may appear after the device reconnects. Details are in Apple’s Apple Pay FAQ.

What Apple’s global figures do—and do not—say
In its 30 September 2026 India launch announcement, Apple reported Apple Pay availability in more than 90 countries and regions and partnerships with more than 11,000 banks and network partners worldwide. Those are global Apple-reported figures, not counts of Indian participating banks or eligible Indian cards. The official materials cited here do not provide an India-specific percentage of cards eligible, transaction volume, or user-adoption statistic.
