Vibe-coded software can be safe to publish, but not by default. Treat code produced or modified by an AI assistant as untrusted until a qualified person reviews it, security tests pass, supply-chain evidence is recorded, and an accountable owner approves the release. AI generation changes how code is produced; it does not provide a security or quality guarantee.
The right question is not whether an app was written by a person or an AI. It is whether the finished system meets the same security, reliability, privacy, licensing and operational gates as any other software. For authentication, sensitive data, payments or privileged infrastructure, require deeper testing and an independent review before launch.
What “safe to publish” means for vibe-coded software
“Vibe coding” usually means describing a feature in natural language and accepting substantial code generated by an AI assistant, sometimes through an agent that can edit files, run commands or change deployment settings. The label says little about the resulting risk. A small static site and a payment service may both be “vibe-coded,” but their acceptable evidence and review depth are very different.
Safe publication means that a named human owner understands the system well enough to approve it, and that the release has passed documented security, quality and governance controls. An AI-generated review comment, green-looking output or claim that “the tests passed” is not a substitute for inspecting the code, the test execution and the affected environment. OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI guidance states the accountability plainly: “The developer who accepts and commits the code does.”

Current primary guidance does not establish a universal failure or vulnerability rate for vibe-coded applications. NIST SP 800-218A (July 2024), the CISA Software Acquisition Guide (2024), CISA supplier guidance (August 2024) and OWASP guidance describe controls and responsibilities rather than a prevalence statistic. Use those controls to make a release decision for the specific application.
Match the review to impact and blast radius
Start by classifying what could happen if the application is compromised, unavailable or wrong. The following framework is a practical way to set the minimum evidence needed; an application can move to a stricter tier when its dependencies, privileges or deployment environment increase the blast radius.
| Impact tier | Typical examples | Minimum release evidence | Review independence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lower impact | Static content or a local utility with no secrets, accounts or external writes | Human code review, dependency and secret checks, automated tests, and a tested rollback or redeploy path | Owner review may be sufficient when the threat model is simple |
| Moderate impact | Public web app with user accounts, ordinary business data or third-party APIs | All lower-tier evidence plus SAST, SCA, DAST where applicable, abuse-case tests, IaC review, SBOM and staged deployment monitoring | A second reviewer should examine security-sensitive changes |
| High impact | Payments, health or other sensitive data, administrative functions, production credentials or privileged infrastructure | Qualified human review, independent security review, expanded dynamic and integration testing, verified provenance, signed artifacts where feasible, documented exceptions and a rehearsed rollback | Require an independent reviewer who did not author or accept the generated change |
CISA supplier guidance recommends controls commensurate with product requirements and risk profile. In practice, authentication, authorization, sensitive data, payments and privileged infrastructure should trigger the high-impact process even when the codebase is small.

- Define the system and its risk. Record the data classification, users, trust boundaries, external services, privileged operations, security requirements and acceptable residual risk. Draw where untrusted input enters and where data or credentials leave.
- Assign accountability. Name the human owner who can explain and approve the release. Assign an independent reviewer for high-impact changes. Approval should cover the application, build process and deployment configuration, not only the main source files.
- Inventory AI involvement. Identify AI-generated or AI-modified files, assistants, models, plugins, MCP or other external tools, prompts and imported snippets. Keep prompts or contribution records when organizational policy requires them. This inventory lets reviewers focus on opaque or high-risk changes.
- Review the application’s security boundaries. Trace authentication, authorization, input validation, output encoding, cryptography, secrets, logging, rate limits, error handling and failure paths. Test the actual abuse cases implied by the threat model rather than accepting a generated assertion that a control exists.
- Inspect the complete build and delivery surface. Read package manifests, lockfiles, install and package scripts, CI workflows, Dockerfiles, Makefiles, build scripts, infrastructure-as-code and deployment settings. AI agents can alter these files even when the requested feature concerns only application logic.
- Verify every dependency. Confirm that each package exists in the intended registry and that its name is not a hallucinated or typosquatted package. Check maintainer history, creation date, adoption, license and known vulnerabilities. Apply an approved allowlist, age or reputation gates, pin versions in lockfiles and keep continuous vulnerability monitoring enabled.
- Run release-gate automation. Execute SAST, SCA, secret scanning and IaC scanning on pull requests containing AI-generated code. Add IAST or DAST when the application and environment support them, plus unit, integration, property-based and abuse-case tests. Configure critical findings to block the merge.
- Capture supply-chain evidence. Generate and retain an SBOM, assess vendors and open-source components, record build provenance linking the artifact to a trusted builder, and sign artifacts where feasible. Keep enough information to reproduce or investigate the build.
- Complete privacy, license and data-governance checks. Confirm that coding assistants and hosted tools comply with organizational policy, that prompts and source code are not sent to an unauthorized service, and that third-party notices and license obligations are satisfied.
- Stage, observe and approve. Deploy to a controlled environment, exercise authentication, data flows, integrations and rollback, then watch logs and security signals. Document unresolved exceptions with an accountable approver, define incident response and patch ownership, and schedule the next dependency and security review.
Common risks specific to vibe coding
Hallucinated and malicious dependencies
An assistant may invent a package name that sounds plausible. If no package exists, an attacker can register that name and place malicious code in it before the generated install command is run. A real package can also be compromised or be a typosquat of the intended component.
Search the official registry, inspect the package’s publication and maintainer history, compare the name and scope with the project’s documentation, and look for meaningful adoption. Reject a dependency whose identity, ownership, license or purpose cannot be established. Use organization-approved registries or allowlists, minimum-age or reputation policies, pinned versions and automated vulnerability monitoring. Review transitive dependencies as well as direct ones; the lockfile is evidence of what will be installed, not proof that every component is trustworthy.

Indirect prompt injection in the development loop
Instructions embedded in an issue, pull request, README, fetched documentation or dependency can manipulate an agent. A poisoned instruction might tell it to weaken a security check, edit unrelated files, reveal source code or run a command with network access. The instruction can look like ordinary project text while the agent treats it as an authorized request.
Handle repository content and external text as untrusted input. Run agents in a sandbox, give them the least permissions needed, restrict credentials and network access, and require explicit approval for sensitive operations. Review the complete diff, including files outside the requested feature, and compare the changes with the stated task. A clean-looking feature is not enough if the agent also changed a workflow, script or configuration file.

Prompt-to-code supply-chain changes
Agentic tools can edit package scripts, CI workflows, Dockerfiles, Makefiles, build scripts and deployment infrastructure. These files execute automatically or control what reaches production, so a small generated change can create a large blast radius.
Give automatically executed changes elevated scrutiny. Flag new shell commands, downloads, network calls, credential use, modified permissions and changes to publishing or deployment steps. Verify the source and checksum of downloaded tools, inspect container base images and entrypoints, and ensure CI secrets are scoped to the job that needs them. Require a human approval gate before a workflow can publish an artifact or deploy to production.
Authentication and authorization defects
Generated code often handles the happy path before it handles trust boundaries. Test whether every protected route verifies identity, whether authorization is checked for the specific object and action, and whether role changes or revoked sessions take effect promptly. Look for insecure direct object references, privilege escalation, default credentials, overly broad service accounts and inconsistent checks between an API and its user interface.

Build tests from real abuse cases: access another user’s record, call an administrative endpoint with a normal account, replay a token, alter a role identifier and invoke an endpoint directly instead of through the interface. Review session creation, expiration, rotation, cookie flags and cross-site request protections rather than relying on an assistant’s description of the implementation.

Inspect every boundary where user, file, URL or third-party data enters. Check parameterized database access, output encoding for the destination context, command and template injection defenses, upload limits and type validation. Review deserialization, server-side request forgery (SSRF), path traversal and URL fetching, especially when the application can reach internal services.
Use malformed, oversized and unexpected inputs in automated and manual abuse-case tests. Confirm that validation occurs on the server, that rejected input cannot reach a privileged sink, and that errors do not disclose stack traces, tokens, connection strings or personal data.
Secrets, cryptography, logging and failure behavior
Run secret scanning across source, history, build logs, images and configuration. Replace any exposed credential, invalidate it and investigate where it was used; deleting the line is not sufficient. Check that production secrets come from an approved secret manager or protected runtime configuration, not from prompts, repositories or client-side bundles.
Verify cryptographic choices and key handling against the application’s requirements. Do not accept a generated custom cipher, home-grown password hashing or hard-coded key. Review logs for accidental personal data or credentials, ensure security events are useful for detection, and make failure paths fail closed where appropriate. Rate limits, timeouts, retry behavior and resource limits are security controls for availability as well as quality.

False confidence from generated tests
An assistant can create tests that mirror its own assumptions and report success without proving that the tests ran against the intended build. Inspect the test command, environment, fixtures, coverage and failure output. Ensure that tests exercise authorization failures, invalid input, dependency errors, concurrency and rollback-relevant paths. Property-based or fuzz tests can expose assumptions that a few example cases miss.
Security and quality gates that should block release
OWASP AISVS Appendix C calls for qualified human review and automated SAST, IAST, DAST, secret scanning, IaC scanning and SCA on pull requests containing AI-generated code. It also calls for blocking merges on critical findings and applying an elevated review threshold to security-critical files.
| Gate | What it examines | Release use |
|---|---|---|
| SAST | Source and bytecode patterns such as injection, unsafe APIs and access-control mistakes | Run on every relevant change; investigate and block critical results |
| SCA | Direct and transitive dependencies, versions and known vulnerabilities | Fail on policy-defined critical risk; verify exceptions and compensating controls |
| Secret scanning | Credentials and sensitive tokens in source, history, artifacts and logs | Block exposed secrets, rotate them and check for use |
| IaC scanning | Cloud, network, container and infrastructure configuration | Block public exposure, excessive privilege and unsafe defaults unless formally approved |
| DAST | Running application behavior from an external attacker’s perspective | Use in a staging environment to find reachable runtime flaws |
| IAST | Runtime behavior with instrumentation inside the application | Use where supported to connect exploit paths to code locations |
| Unit, integration and abuse-case tests | Functional behavior, trust boundaries and failure modes | Require reproducible execution and review coverage, not an AI-generated claim |
Define severity thresholds before running the tools. A critical unresolved finding should block the merge or release. If a team accepts an exception, record the affected asset, exploitability, compensating control, expiration date and named approver; “the scanner may be wrong” is not an exception rationale by itself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Supply-chain, SBOM and build-provenance evidence
An SBOM lists the components that make up the released artifact, including transitive libraries where the chosen format and tooling support them. Retain the SBOM with the release so a newly disclosed vulnerability can be mapped to deployed versions. An SBOM does not certify a component; it makes the component inventory available for assessment.
Assess vendors and open-source projects for maintenance, security practices, support and license fit. Monitor vulnerabilities after launch and define who can patch or replace a component. Record the source revision, dependency lockfile, build environment and builder identity. Provenance should link the artifact to a trusted, reviewable build process and be difficult to forge. Reproducible builds or independently verifiable build steps strengthen that evidence; sign artifacts where feasible and verify signatures before deployment.

Reviewers should be able to answer: which source revision produced this artifact, which dependencies were resolved, which workflow ran, which credentials were available, and whether the deployed bytes match the approved build. If those answers are unavailable, the release has a supply-chain evidence gap even when the application tests pass.
Privacy, licensing and AI-tool governance
CISA guidance asks suppliers to validate the license implications of AI-generated code, review whether AI or cloud developer tools comply with policy and perform ongoing data-leakage reviews. Treat prompts, pasted source, issue text and generated output as potentially sensitive data. Confirm retention, training use, access controls, geographic processing and deletion terms for each hosted tool according to your organization’s policy.
Keep an inventory of the models and tools used, the categories of data shared, and the generated contributions that policy requires you to retain. Check copyright and open-source license obligations for generated snippets and imported code, preserve required notices and verify that the project’s distribution model is compatible with those obligations. Revisit this review when the assistant, model, plugin, data policy or deployment environment changes.
Deployment, monitoring and recovery requirements
Publish first to a controlled stage that resembles production. Exercise login and logout, authorization failures, file and URL handling, third-party outages, rate limits, queue or database failures and the rollback procedure. Confirm that monitoring captures authentication anomalies, authorization failures, unexpected outbound connections, error spikes, dependency failures and changes to deployment configuration without logging secrets or unnecessary personal data.
Define who receives alerts, who can stop a rollout, who owns emergency patches and how customers or regulators will be notified when required. Keep a known-good artifact and configuration so rollback does not depend on the same newly generated code or an unavailable AI service. Schedule post-release dependency review and reassess the threat model after material feature, model, plugin or infrastructure changes.
Go/no-go checklist
- Ownership: A named human owner can explain the system and has approved the release; high-impact changes have an independent reviewer.
- Scope: Data classification, trust boundaries, security requirements and acceptable residual risk are documented.
- AI inventory: Generated files, assistants, models, plugins, MCP or external tools, prompts and imported contributions are recorded as required.
- Code security: Authentication, authorization, validation, encoding, cryptography, secrets, logging, rate limits, errors and failure handling were reviewed and abuse-tested.
- Dependencies: Every direct and transitive package has a verified registry identity, acceptable maintainer history, license and vulnerability status; versions are pinned and monitored.
- Automation: SAST, SCA, secret, IaC and applicable DAST or IAST checks ran on the actual change; critical findings block release.
- Build surface: Manifests, lockfiles, scripts, CI, containers, IaC and deployment settings were inspected for commands, downloads, network access, credentials and publication changes.
- Evidence: Unit, integration, property-based and abuse-case tests ran reproducibly; an SBOM and build provenance are retained; artifacts are signed where feasible.
- Governance: Privacy, data-leakage, tool-policy and license reviews are complete, with required notices and records.
- Operations: Staged deployment, monitoring, incident response, patch ownership and rollback have been tested, and every accepted exception has an accountable approver.
When publication should stop
Do not publish when a critical security finding is unresolved, a dependency cannot be verified, a secret may have been exposed, the owner cannot explain a privileged path, the build cannot be tied to the reviewed source, or rollback and incident ownership are undefined. These are evidence gaps, not merely documentation issues.
Publish only when the evidence matches the application’s impact and blast radius. For a low-impact utility, that may be a focused human review and automated checks. For a service handling accounts, sensitive data, payments or privileged infrastructure, require the stronger independent review, runtime testing, provenance and operational controls described above.
