Can you follow the story without playing the other games?
Yes. The story centers on Chloe Frazer and mercenary Nadine Ross as they search for the Golden Tusk of Ganesh in India’s Western Ghats and contend with warlord Asav. PlayStation’s current game description frames the adventure around Chloe confronting her past and deciding what she is willing to sacrifice to forge her own legacy.
PlayStation’s series FAQ acknowledges continuity across the games but says each is meant to work as a standalone adventure. Naughty Dog also described The Lost Legacy as a standalone story, and a 2017 PlayStation Blog preview said players did not need to own Uncharted 4. You do not need to know the earlier plot to understand the basic setup or follow Chloe and Nadine’s adventure.
What do the earlier games add?
They provide character familiarity, not essential plot instructions. Chloe appeared in earlier series entries, while Nadine’s role in Uncharted 4 gives returning players more context for her. The Lost Legacy gives both women room beyond their previous roles, and develops their partnership and backgrounds as part of its own story.

The contrast between the leads is part of the appeal: Naughty Dog described Nadine as a cool, calculating tactician and Chloe as more improvisational and witty. In a PlayStation Blog interview, creative director Shaun Escayg said, “You will learn some stuff that you would have never known about Nadine – there’s a side of her you really wouldn’t expect.” That character depth can land differently if you already know them, but the game is built to introduce their dynamic here.
What kind of game should you expect?
PlayStation describes cinematic combat, exploration, traversal, and complex puzzles. A 2017 PlayStation Blog gameplay preview also highlighted a broader, more open area, stealth or direct-combat options, a map, lockpicking, and optional exploration. Those details suggest a familiar Uncharted action-adventure framework with some room to explore; the preview is historical coverage, not a current technical assessment.

If you like cinematic action, climbing and traversal, puzzle-solving, and combat, the game’s genre should be a comfortable fit. It is less likely to suit someone looking for a fundamentally different style of game.
Should you play the series in order?
Choose based on what matters to you:
- For story comprehension: You can start with The Lost Legacy; PlayStation’s guidance supports playing the entries independently.
- For character familiarity: Earlier games give you more background on Chloe and Nadine, especially Nadine’s place in Uncharted 4.
- For gameplay expectations: Start here if cinematic action-adventure gameplay appeals to you; playing prior entries is not a prerequisite for understanding the format.
There is no need to work through the whole series first. If you later play earlier games, they can fill in character history rather than serve as required setup.
