Too much music gear can make choosing where to start harder, Hazel Mills says—but her view is an interviewee’s perspective, not proof that a large setup universally harms creativity. In a My Forever Studio Season 8 episode, as reported by MusicTech, Mills describes option paralysis as real and favors a few ready-to-use gear combinations over having every available tool set up at once.

MusicTech identifies Mills as a singer, songwriter, and session musician who has collaborated with Kylie Minogue and Florence and the Machine. The article reports her remarks from the Season 8 episode of the My Forever Studio podcast, made in partnership with Audient.
Music production offers many possible choices, from MIDI controllers and keyboards to microphones and plugins. Mills’ concern is that a musician may spend time choosing among tools—or acquiring new ones in pursuit of new sounds—instead of learning and using the equipment already at hand. “Option paralysis is very real,” she says, as quoted by MusicTech.
Why Mills prefers a smaller set of ready-to-use options
Mills says she does not usually set up all the gear she can access at once. Instead, she likes to have combinations ready to use. That approach can reduce the number of decisions waiting at the start of a session, while leaving other tools available when there is a reason to switch.

She also argues that limitations can encourage creativity. In her view, sustained time with one piece of gear helps a musician learn not only its controls, but also how they respond to it and what their own voice sounds like through it. Mills describes using one piece of gear for a year as an example of getting to know it; that is her illustration, not a proven or required timeline.

Try a focused setup without buying anything
If choosing among equipment is slowing you down, try Mills’ approach as a personal experiment rather than a guaranteed creativity fix:
- Choose one instrument, plugin, or other tool you already own.
- Prepare a small number of combinations you can start using without rebuilding your setup.
- Use that selection for a period that suits your work; Mills’ one-year example is advice, not a validated duration.
- Notice whether sessions are easier to start, whether you learn the tool more deeply, and whether you feel focused or boxed in.
- Bring in another piece of gear when it serves a specific musical purpose, rather than treating every new option as necessary.
The point is not to reject equipment or permanently limit your sound. It is to see whether fewer decisions help you spend more of a session making music—and to keep the approach only if it works for you.
