There is no documented public API that exports the rendered contents of another app’s Apple Notes note. If you need a picture of what is on screen, iPhone’s normal screenshot action is the supported path for a person. An app that implements screen capture must use Apple’s ScreenCaptureKit flow, including the system content-sharing picker and the operating system versions that support the API. If you need to share or export note content, use Notes’ own Share menu. These are different operations from reading a private note through an API.
What “iPhone Notes screenshot API” can mean
The phrase usually describes one of two jobs:
- Capture a screen image: produce a PNG-like image of the display or an app view while Notes is visible.
- Export note content: obtain the text, attachments, or formatted representation of an Apple Notes document and turn it into an image or another file.
Apple’s documented interfaces address these jobs separately. ScreenCaptureKit is a framework for screen capture and streaming. Notes sharing is an interface workflow that hands data to the system activity view. The reviewed Apple documentation does not establish a Notes-specific endpoint that reads private Notes data or exports the rendered note view as an image.
What ScreenCaptureKit actually provides
SCScreenshotManager.captureImage returns a single captured image frame from a capture stream. The target is selected with an SCContentFilter, and capture properties are supplied through the stream configuration. Its documented scope is a frame from a screen-capture stream—not an Apple Notes document export API.
The system picker is part of the flow
Apple’s ScreenCaptureKit sample uses a system content-sharing picker. The person chooses either the entire display or content within the sample app; the picker callback supplies a content filter, after which the app starts a stream. The sample documentation is marked preliminary and says it requires iOS 27 or later. Verify the API and behavior against the deployment target you actually support before shipping.

Full-display and in-app capture are different modes
A full-display selection concerns the display chosen in the picker. In-app selection concerns content from the app participating in the capture flow. The sample’s ability to save recordings to Photos or pass files to the standard share sheet describes that sample, not a universal guarantee that every Notes screen can be captured on every iOS release or configuration.
What an app cannot assume
- Calling
captureImagedoes not grant general access to another app’s private data. - There is no documented “note ID to screenshot” method in the reviewed Apple APIs.
- A share sheet does not become a Notes database reader merely because Notes appears as a source or destination.
- Screen capture may be limited by picker choices, OS availability, protected content, app state, and the user’s permission or cancellation.
Use the iPhone screenshot action when a person needs a picture
For an ordinary user, the reliable method is hardware capture: press the Side button and Volume Up together on Face ID iPhones, or the Side button and Home button on models with a Home button. Tap the thumbnail to crop or mark up, then save or share the result. This produces a screen image without requiring an app or API.
For a long note, iOS may offer a Full Page option in supported contexts such as a web document. That option is context-dependent; do not treat it as a general Apple Notes export interface. If Full Page is not offered in Notes, use Notes’ export or share actions instead of expecting a single scrolling screenshot.
Use Notes’ Share menu when the goal is export or collaboration
Open the note, tap the Share button, and use the activity view. Apple’s interface guidance shows actions that can include sharing, copying, exporting, or adding markup. The exact activities depend on the data supplied and the apps installed on the device.
Choose the output that matches the requirement

UIKit’s UIActivityViewController is the general mechanism for sharing data your own app already has. The activities shown depend on the type of data you pass. It does not retrieve a note from Apple Notes, enumerate the user’s notes, or bypass app isolation.

If you are building a capture app
- Set a realistic deployment target. The current Apple sample states an iOS 27-or-later requirement and is preliminary. Check the SDK and deployment target used by your project.
- Present the system content-sharing picker. Let the user select the display or eligible app content rather than silently assuming that Notes is capturable.
- Build the returned content filter. Use the picker callback’s filter to identify the selected source.
- Configure and start the stream. Supply capture properties and start the ScreenCaptureKit stream according to the API available in your target SDK.
- Request a frame. Call
SCScreenshotManager.captureImagefor a single image frame from the active stream. - Handle cancellation and unavailable content. The user can cancel the picker, the selected source can disappear, or the OS can reject a capture. Surface a useful error and let the user retry.
- Save or share only what your app received. Writing to Photos or presenting UIKit’s activity view controller is an output step; neither step expands the capture scope.
Conceptual Swift shape
The exact initializer and configuration properties vary with the SDK you compile against, so use Apple’s ScreenCaptureKit sample and API reference for signatures. The important sequence is picker, filter, stream, then frame:

Sharing content from your own note-like app
If your app owns the note data, you can render that data yourself and share it. For example, create a PDF, image, or plain-text representation, then pass the resulting URL or data object to UIActivityViewController. This is a fundamentally different design from trying to read Apple Notes.

- Declare the data type accurately so compatible activities appear.
- Use a temporary file for large images or PDFs rather than placing a large binary object directly in memory.
- Respect the user’s choice of destination and report activity completion or cancellation.
Common failure modes and fixes
“There is no Notes API in my project”
Cause: Apple does not document a public Notes screenshot/export endpoint in the reviewed material. Fix: decide whether you need a screen frame (ScreenCaptureKit or a manual screenshot) or shared note data (Notes’ Share menu).
“The picker does not show the source I expected”
Cause: picker eligibility and OS behavior determine available sources. Fix: test the exact iOS version and device, explain the required selection to the user, and provide a fallback such as the manual screenshot action.

“The app works on one OS but will not build on another”
Cause: ScreenCaptureKit sample availability is tied to the SDK and its stated iOS 27-or-later requirement. Fix: gate calls with availability checks, raise the deployment target only when appropriate, and keep a non-capture code path for older systems.
“The screenshot is blank, incomplete, or stops when Notes changes”
Cause: a stream frame reflects the selected source at capture time; protected or unavailable content and source changes can affect the result. Fix: verify the filter, wait until the desired screen is visible, detect stream errors, and ask the user to select the source again.
“UIActivityViewController cannot share my note”
Cause: the controller only shares objects your app supplies, and activities depend on their type. Fix: create a valid file, URL, text value, or image first, then present the activity view with that item.
“I need a scrolling image of a long Apple Note”
Cause: a single frame is not a document export and may not include content below the viewport. Fix: use Notes’ available export/copy options, capture multiple sections under user control, or reproduce the note in an app you own and render it there.
Performance, privacy, and reliability considerations
- Frame timing: capture only after the selected source has rendered the state you need; a frame request is not a semantic “wait until note saved” operation.
- Memory: large Retina frames can be expensive. Downsample or write to a file before presenting sharing UI.
- Privacy: tell users what display or app content will be captured and where it will be saved or shared. A screen frame can include notifications and unrelated private information.
- Recovery: treat picker cancellation, stream interruption, source disappearance, and file-write failure as normal branches, not fatal assumptions.
- Testing: test locked and unlocked states, different orientations, long notes, attachments, dark mode, older supported OS versions, and user cancellation.
