The Samsung Gear S3 is water-resistant, with an IP68 rating that Samsung specifies for fresh-water immersion up to 1.5 m (5 feet) for up to 30 minutes under controlled test conditions. That rating is not a guarantee for every real-world situation, and Samsung warns against strong moving water and says impacts can compromise the watch’s resistance.
What the Gear S3’s IP68 rating means
Samsung classifies the Gear S3 as IP68. Its model-specific guidance limits immersion to fresh water no deeper than 1.5 m and no longer than 30 minutes. Samsung’s product materials give the same limit as 5 feet for up to 30 minutes. These are equivalent rounded depth descriptions, not separate allowances. The Gear S3 manual specifies the IP68 test conditions as 15–35°C, 86–106 kPa, 5.0 feet of water, and 30 minutes. Those are controlled laboratory conditions, not a promise that a watch will withstand every kind of water exposure. Samsung Gear S3 manual.
Can you swim, shower, or use it in moving water?
Samsung’s reviewed Gear S3 guidance does not affirmatively approve swimming, showering, hot tubs, diving, or vigorous water sports. Do not interpret the IP68 figure as a blanket recommendation for those activities. Samsung specifically says to avoid moving water such as a rapid or strong current, so the rating should not be read as protection against forceful water exposure. Samsung’s Gear S3 support guidance.

How to care for the watch after it gets wet
- After exposure to clean water, dry the watch.
- If it encounters salt water, ionized water, or an alcoholic beverage, rinse it with clean water and dry it with a clean, soft cloth.
- Do not assume the watch will work normally while wet. Samsung warns that the touchscreen or other features may not work properly in water, and call sound may be unclear after immersion or when the microphone or speaker is wet.

Can an older or damaged Gear S3 still be trusted around water?
Not necessarily. Samsung warns that a drop or impact can damage water- and dust-resistant performance. Because the Gear S3 is an older model, a used watch’s original condition cannot be assumed; the cited Samsung guidance offers no consumer test for certifying the present seal of an individual unit.

The Gear S3 manual states: “If any liquid is found to have entered your device components or an internally sealed system, this condition will void your device warranty.” This is wording from the manual, not a determination of current warranty rights for every country or used device. No. Samsung lists Gear S3 Frontier and Classic models; its product explainer says Frontier came with a silicone band and Classic with a leather band. Samsung’s launch materials state that the watch supports standard 22 mm bands, so a compatible replacement band is an option if the original is unsuitable.
