AMD identifies it as “AMD Ryzen 9 5900 (OEM Only)” and gives its launch date as January 12, 2021. It is a 12-core, 24-thread AM4 processor rated at 65 W default TDP. An A520 listing can confirm support for one specific board and BIOS; it does not establish compatibility with every A520 motherboard.
What is the Ryzen 9 5900?
AMD’s product specification describes the Ryzen 9 5900 as a Vermeer desktop processor. The official page lists these specifications and identifies the chip as OEM Only:

Will it work in an A520 motherboard?
It may, but the chipset name alone is not enough to confirm compatibility. The motherboard manufacturer’s CPU-support list for your exact model is the relevant check, along with the BIOS version required by that list.

What the ASUS listing confirms
ASUS lists the Ryzen 9 5900 on the CPU-support page for the PRIME A520M-A/CSM, validated from BIOS 2407. That is the minimum version shown for this CPU on that board’s support table—not a statement that BIOS 2407 is the board’s newest BIOS.
How to check your board
- Find the motherboard’s full model name and revision, if the manufacturer distinguishes revisions.
- Open the manufacturer’s support page for that exact board and locate its CPU-support list.
- Look for “Ryzen 9 5900,” not just “Ryzen 9 5900X,” and note the minimum BIOS version listed for the 5900.
- Check the board maker’s BIOS update instructions before installing the CPU. If the current BIOS is older than the listed minimum, the system may need a supported CPU already installed to update it; follow the manufacturer’s directions for your board.
ASRock’s general AM4 CPU list also includes the 5900, but that does not establish support for every ASRock A520 board. Use the support page for the specific board you own. ASRock’s AM4 CPU support list

How is the Ryzen 9 5900 different from the 5900X?
The 5900 and 5900X are distinct models. Their names are easy to confuse, but the published base clock, TDP and part numbers distinguish them. The table compares the figures established by AMD and motherboard-maker support lists:
| CPU | Base clock | Default or listed TDP | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 9 5900 | 3.0 GHz | 65 W | 100-000000062 |
| Ryzen 9 5900X | 3.7 GHz | 105 W | 100-000000061 |
AMD gives the 5900 a boost clock of up to 4.7 GHz. ASUS lists the 5900X separately at 3.7 GHz base, 105 W and 12 cores. The specifications identify the two parts, but they do not by themselves establish comparative performance or value. ASUS PRIME A520M-A/CSM CPU support · ASRock AM4 CPU support

What does “OEM Only” mean for buyers?
AMD labels the Ryzen 9 5900 OEM Only and lists the tray product ID as 100-000000062. That label is the basis for describing it as an OEM part; it does not prove whether a particular retailer currently has it in stock or what it costs. The available official specifications do not establish current consumer retail inventory or pricing.
If you find one for sale, check that the listing is for the Ryzen 9 5900 rather than the 5900X, and verify the seller, condition and exact part before buying. Also make sure your motherboard’s support page confirms compatibility and that you have a discrete graphics card for a system that needs display output.
