Sometimes—but not because it unlocks path tracing. The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is a high-end gaming CPU that can suit a new AM5 build, high-refresh gaming, and games that put substantial demands on the processor. Path tracing is primarily a graphics workload, so for a 1440p or 4K path-traced PC, put the GPU first. Buy the 9800X3D if its price and broader gaming strengths fit your build; don’t pay a premium on the assumption that it will universally raise path-tracing frame rates.

What the Ryzen 7 9800X3D does in a path-traced PC

Path tracing is a rendering technique handled chiefly by the graphics card. NVIDIA describes its RTX 50-series path-tracing capability in terms of GPU architecture, including Blackwell RT and Tensor cores, alongside technologies such as DLSS. A fast CPU can still matter: it runs game simulation and helps deliver frames, and it can become a limit when a game or configuration is CPU-bound. But the CPU does not substitute for a GPU capable of the chosen path-tracing settings.

That distinction matters most at demanding resolutions. At 1440p or 4K with path tracing, the GPU is often the main constraint; at 1080p, high refresh rates, or in unusually CPU-heavy games, the processor can have more influence. The outcome depends on the particular game, settings, resolution, graphics card, and target frame rate.

What the benchmark evidence shows

Cyberpunk 2077: similar results in one ray-tracing test

In PC Gamer’s 2026 comparison of the 9800X3D and its successor, both averaged 112 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p RT Ultra with DLSS Balanced; their reported 1% lows were 76 FPS for the 9800X3D and 78 FPS for the newer 9850X3D. The review’s gaming tests used an RTX 4070, and its overall index scores for the two processors were nearly level. These results describe that reviewer’s test setup, not every game or a 4K full-path-tracing workload. RT Ultra with DLSS Balanced should not automatically be read as full path tracing. CPU-heavy games can show a larger gap

Tom’s Hardware found the 9800X3D 42% faster than the Ryzen 5 7600X in Gears of War E-Day at 1080p High. The outlet characterized the game as unusually CPU-heavy. That is a specific result from one game and setting—not a general uplift for Unreal Engine 5 titles or path-traced scenes. Tom’s Hardware’s Gears of War E-Day CPU test

Resolution can change which component limits performance

In TechSpot’s Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty test using Ultra Ray Tracing and quality upscaling, the RTX 5090 performed similarly to the RTX 4090 at 1080p, likely because the test was CPU-limited. At 1440p, the test was no longer CPU-limited and the RTX 5090 was 22% faster. This illustrates how resolution can shift a result from a CPU limit to a GPU limit; it does not establish a special path-tracing advantage for the 9800X3D. TechSpot’s RTX 5090 review

Taken together, the cited tests do not establish a universal 9800X3D uplift for path tracing. They show why a CPU comparison only answers your buying question when the tested game, settings, resolution, GPU, and frame-rate target resemble your own.

9800X3D specifications and build compatibility

AMD lists the Ryzen 7 9800X3D as an AM5 desktop processor with 8 cores, 16 threads, a 4.7 GHz base clock, boost up to 5.2 GHz, 96 MB of L3 cache, and a 120 W default TDP. AMD lists support for A620, B650/B650E, B840/B850, X670/X670E, and X870/X870E chipsets. Check the specific motherboard’s CPU support list and BIOS requirements before purchase. The boxed processor does not include a thermal solution; AMD recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance, so include an appropriate cooler in the build budget. AMD introduced the processor on October 31, 2024, with a suggested launch price of $479. That is a historical launch figure, not a current street price or proof of a present-day deal. AMD’s launch performance comparisons were based on its own AMD Performance Labs testing in October 2024, so treat them as vendor tests with their stated configurations rather than independent path-tracing results. How to decide whether it is worth buying

  1. Set the GPU budget first. Choose a graphics card that can handle the path-tracing resolution and settings you actually want. NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 page presents path tracing with neural rendering as a GPU capability and its examples may combine upscaling and frame generation; distinguish rendered frames from generated frames when comparing advertised or tested frame rates. NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 information
  2. Identify your performance target. A high-refresh 1080p or 1440p build can benefit more from strong CPU-side frame delivery than a visually demanding 4K build whose GPU is under heavy load.
  3. Check the games and settings you play. Look for results in the actual titles and modes you care about, including whether a test uses ray tracing or full path tracing, its upscaling mode, and its resolution. Average FPS and 1% lows answer different questions about performance.
  4. Compare total platform cost at current prices. Check the 9800X3D against realistic CPU alternatives, including any newer X3D option, and count the motherboard, DDR5 memory, and cooler if you do not already own compatible AM5 parts. Current retailer prices are not established here, so do not use the historical launch price as a substitute.

The 9800X3D is a stronger fit when

  • You are building a premium AM5 gaming PC and want strong CPU performance across a broad mix of games.
  • You target high refresh rates or play titles that show meaningful CPU scaling.
  • The GPU and cooling costs still fit your budget after choosing this processor.

Spend elsewhere first when

  • Your defining goal is path tracing at 1440p or 4K and the graphics card is not yet adequate for those settings.
  • You are paying extra solely on the promise of higher path-traced frame rates.
  • Your games and target resolution are predominantly GPU-limited, making the CPU premium less useful for the experience you want.

Verdict

The Ryzen 7 9800X3D can be a good choice for a premium, well-balanced gaming PC, especially when high-refresh gaming or CPU-heavy titles matter alongside path tracing. For a PC bought specifically to play path-traced games at 1440p or 4K, prioritize the GPU and compare CPU options using tests that match your games and settings. The available cited results do not show that the 9800X3D universally improves path-tracing performance enough to justify a premium on that basis alone.
