If you mainly stream films and shows through mainstream apps, a less expensive device is usually the more sensible buy. The price and availability reported in October 2026 can change, so check current listings before purchasing.
What changed with the SHIELD TV’s price and lineup?
The SHIELD TV Pro is the remaining premium model identified in October 2026 reporting. The standard SHIELD TV was reported discontinued, and the Pro’s U.S. price increased from $199.99 to $299.99 effective October 2, 2026. NVIDIA attributed the increase to higher component costs, including memory, according to Ars Technica’s October 2 report. TechRadar also reported the Pro at about $299 after a 50% increase.
These are dated U.S. reports, not a guarantee of today’s checkout price or stock. Ars reported that NVIDIA’s store was out of stock at the time while Best Buy had the Pro at the new price. Check live listings before deciding.

Video, audio, and upscaling
The Pro supports 4K HDR, Dolby Vision HDR, and HDR10. Its audio formats include Dolby Atmos and DTS-X pass-through, with high-resolution audio up to 24-bit/192 kHz over HDMI and USB. NVIDIA lists AI-enhanced upscaling to as much as 4K at 60 fps, but it does not apply to every video: the company says it works on non-gaming video above 480p and below 4K, at 30 Hz or less, in YUV color space.
App providers control whether particular titles offer 4K, HDR, Dolby Vision, or Atmos, and availability can vary. Your television must support the feature; a receiver or soundbar in the HDMI chain must also support the relevant standards. NVIDIA says 4K/HDR setups need a compatible HDMI 2.0 cable and recommends certified High Speed HDMI cables for some Dolby Vision cable problems. See the NVIDIA SHIELD TV FAQ for setup details.

Local media, USB, and gaming
The Pro’s practical distinction from the tube-shaped SHIELD TV is its two USB 3.0 ports, which support external storage. NVIDIA also identifies Plex Media Server, local and network media playback, and use with a USB TV tuner for local DVR as Pro capabilities. Its playback support spans common formats and codecs such as H.265/HEVC, VP8/VP9, H.264, MPEG, MKV, MOV, and MP4; the product page has the full list.
GeForce NOW and Android gaming are additional reasons to choose Shield, but only if you intend to use them. NVIDIA says GeForce NOW cloud gaming requires a subscription and a compatible controller or keyboard and mouse.

Is the higher price justified for your use?
| How you’ll use it | Does the Pro make sense? | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Mainstream streaming apps only | Usually not at about $300 | Compare current prices and app support on less expensive streamers. You may be paying for media-server, codec, USB, and gaming features you will not use. |
| Plex server or local media library | Potentially | Count Plex Media Server, local/network playback, broad format support, and USB storage only if they fit your actual setup. |
| Dolby Vision, HDR, or Atmos streaming | Depends on the whole setup | Check app and subscription availability, TV support, receiver or soundbar compatibility, and cabling—not just the player’s specifications. |
| GeForce NOW or Android gaming | Potentially | Buy for these features only if you expect to use them; GeForce NOW requires a subscription and compatible input device. |
NVIDIA’s comparison page lists Apple TV, Fire TV Cube, and Roku Ultra as alternatives, but it is manufacturer-authored, not an independent current value comparison. Current competitor prices and versions were not established in the cited material. Compare live prices, the apps and interface you want, local-media/server features, format support, and gaming rather than assuming one device is categorically better.

NVIDIA’s latest listed release in its SHIELD Experience Upgrade release notes is version 9.2.4, with security patches updated to January 2026. The notes include fixes for Disney+ playback, Xbox remote connectivity after sleep, sleep and CEC behavior, and third-party Bluetooth remote disconnections. NVIDIA says updates are pushed directly to SHIELD devices, and its FAQ describes automatic installation settings.

- The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
- HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
- See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
- Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
- Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound
That update history shows continued maintenance, but NVIDIA does not give an end date for future updates on the cited pages. The hardware generation dates to 2019, so the Pro is old hardware even though it retains a distinctive feature set. Separately, Android Authority’s 2026 review reports one reviewer’s YouTube app trouble and argues that the Tegra X1+ cannot handle codecs required for HDR playback on YouTube. Those are the reviewer’s assessment and experience, not a guarantee that every owner will see the same behavior.
Verdict: buy it only for the features you will use
At roughly $300, the SHIELD TV Pro is a niche purchase, not an obvious upgrade for everyday streaming. It can still make sense for a home-media enthusiast who specifically wants Plex Media Server, local playback across a broad range of formats, USB storage, or Shield’s gaming options. For a viewer who mainly opens subscription streaming apps, its extra capabilities are unlikely to justify the higher price.
