No. The Blackout Club does not support cross-platform play. A player on the Steam/Windows version cannot join someone on Xbox or PlayStation, and Xbox and PlayStation players cannot use the game’s built-in matchmaking to play together. The developer attributed that limitation to separate matchmaking systems for each platform and the team’s limited size and budget.
Online co-op is available, but everyone in a session needs to use the same platform ecosystem. The store listings describe different player limits and subscription requirements, so choose the platform your group already shares rather than buying different versions and expecting them to connect.

Those player counts are the limits stated by each storefront. They should not be merged into one universal number: Steam, Xbox and PlayStation present the online mode differently.

Cross-platform play, or cross-play, would let people using different hardware join the same session. That is not how The Blackout Club works. The game’s online matchmaking is separated by platform, so a Steam player is placed with other players using the Steam/Windows release, an Xbox player uses the Xbox network, and a PlayStation player uses the PlayStation network.

- Players on the same ecosystem: Online co-op is supported, subject to that platform’s account, entitlement and storefront requirements.
The Xbox listing covers both Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, while the cited PlayStation Store listing is for PS4. The listings establish the supported products, but they do not promise that every possible console-generation combination has identical behavior. If your group is split between hardware generations, verify the version shown in each player’s library before purchasing.
The developer’s cross-play explanation
In a developer-authored Steam discussion dated February 27, 2020, a player asked whether cross-play was possible. The team answered:
“Unfortunately it is not possible – the game relies on the matchmaking systems for individual each platform, and is out of reach (size and budget) for the team.”

This is the clearest direct explanation of the limitation. It identifies two practical barriers: each platform has its own matchmaking system, and implementing and maintaining a shared system was beyond the studio’s available size and budget. It is not a setting that can be enabled from a menu, and it is not a networking problem that a player can fix with a controller, adapter or other accessory.

The current storefront descriptions continue to present separate platform versions and online modes without advertising cross-play. The latest explicit developer answer therefore remains the useful rule when planning a session: buy and launch the same platform family as your friends.
How online co-op is divided by platform
Steam and Windows PC
Steam lists the game as released on July 29, 2019 and describes online co-op for 1–4 players. For a PC group, each participant should own and launch the Steam/Windows version. A Steam player cannot send an in-game invitation that moves a friend into an Xbox or PlayStation session; the platform boundary remains in place even when both people have internet access and compatible controllers.
When organizing a PC session, check that every friend is using the same Steam release rather than assuming that ownership on another storefront is interchangeable. The online-player figure in the Steam listing is the one to use for a PC party; do not substitute the Xbox or PlayStation figure.

Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S
The Xbox listing is dated July 30, 2019, supports Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and describes online co-op for 2–4 players. Console multiplayer also requires an eligible Game Pass subscription. Each participant should confirm that the account playing the game has the required online entitlement before troubleshooting invitations or matchmaking.

The Xbox family is separate from both PC and PlayStation for matchmaking purposes. Owning the game on Xbox does not provide a route into a Steam or PS4 lobby, and an Xbox subscription does not remove that platform separation.
PlayStation 4
The PlayStation Store listing is for PS4, with a July 30, 2019 release date. It advertises support for up to five online players and states that PS Plus is required for online play. Those details belong to the PS4 storefront entry; they should not be used to infer a PS5 edition or to change the limits shown for the other platforms.
A PS4 group therefore needs the PS4 version, active accounts that can use online multiplayer, and PS Plus where required. PlayStation players remain within the PlayStation ecosystem and cannot join Xbox or Steam sessions.
Choosing a platform for your group
The simplest way to avoid an incompatible purchase is to decide the ecosystem before anyone buys the game. Use this sequence:

- List each person’s intended device. Write down Steam/Windows PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S or PS4 for every player. Do not classify a person only as “console” or “PC”; the specific network matters.
- Find the shared ecosystem. If everyone is on Steam, use the PC version. If everyone is using Xbox, use the Xbox release. If everyone is on PS4, use the PlayStation release. A mixed list has no cross-play solution inside the game.
- Check the exact store entry. Confirm the hardware and edition shown on the purchase page. The PlayStation listing identified here is PS4, while the Xbox listing identifies Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
- Confirm online entitlements. Xbox players need an eligible Game Pass subscription for console multiplayer, and PS4 players need PS Plus. PC players should make sure their Steam accounts can use online features.
- Install and update the same release. Have everyone start the version associated with the agreed ecosystem and complete any required game or platform updates before attempting to form a party.
- Use that platform’s normal friend and invite flow. Once the accounts are on the same network, send invitations or join through the platform’s standard online tools. If a friend still appears unavailable, re-check the ecosystem and subscription entitlement first; changing accessories cannot create cross-play.
Does the game have local co-op or split-screen?
No. The Blackout Club does not offer local split-screen co-op. In a developer-authored Steam discussion posted November 4, 2018, the team said it did not plan local co-op because split-screen would require compromises in the game’s art and user interface, and the small studio did not have the capacity for the feature.
That means two people in the same room cannot share one console or one PC screen as a local two-player mode. Each online participant needs a supported platform, a copy of the appropriate version and the relevant online access entitlement.

“Can my PC copy play with my friend’s Xbox copy?”
No. The PC and Xbox releases use separate platform matchmaking systems. Both players would need to use the same ecosystem to play together.
“Can PS4 players play with Xbox players?”
No. The PS4 and Xbox versions do not share cross-play matchmaking. A PS4 party must stay within PlayStation, and an Xbox party must stay within Xbox.

“My friends quote different player limits. Which number is correct?”
All three numbers can be correct because they come from different storefront descriptions: Steam lists 1–4 online co-op players, Xbox lists 2–4, and PlayStation lists up to five. Use the limit displayed for the version your group is actually using.
“Can a headset, controller, adapter or VPN enable cross-play?”
No. The restriction is in the game’s platform-specific matchmaking architecture, not in the input device or home network accessory. No peripheral changes which network the game uses.
“Is there a PS5 version in the compatibility information?”
The PlayStation Store entry identified for this game is for PS4. It does not establish a PS5 edition, so do not assume that a PS5 purchase or backward-compatibility setup changes the cross-play rule.
“Does the game support cross-progression?”
The cited platform listings and developer cross-play response address online co-op and matchmaking, not cross-progression. They do not establish that saves, unlocks or progression transfer between Steam, Xbox and PlayStation.
What to do if a same-platform session still fails
First, return to the compatibility checklist rather than trying random hardware fixes:
- Confirm every player is using the same ecosystem, not merely the same game title.
- Verify that Xbox players have the eligible Game Pass multiplayer entitlement and that PS4 players have PS Plus.
- Check that each person launched the platform version shown in the agreed storefront.
- Install any pending game or console updates, then restart the game before sending a new invitation.
- If all players are on the same supported platform and have the required entitlement but the session still cannot be formed, use the platform’s support process and the game’s official support channels. There is no cross-play switch to enable locally.
Bottom line for buying and joining friends
The Blackout Club has online co-op, but it is not cross-platform and it has no local split-screen mode. Decide on Steam/Windows, Xbox or PS4 as a group, buy the version for that ecosystem, and verify the applicable online subscription before inviting anyone. A mixed PC–Xbox–PlayStation group cannot be combined into one built-in multiplayer session.
