Usually, only if the specific used unit is verified, fits your build, and costs meaningfully less than a new power supply with a warranty. The original Antec HCG-520 was a respectable budget PSU when it launched, but its favorable 2011 review and price do not establish that a decades-old used listing is a good buy now. Check the exact model, condition, cables, protections, seller returns, and delivered price before deciding.
Which Antec HCG-520 is this?
This article refers to the original Antec High Current Gamer HCG-520: a 520W, 80 PLUS Bronze, non-modular ATX power supply with a single +12V rail. It is not the semi-modular HCG-520M or a later HCG Bronze or Gold model. Hardware Secrets identifies Seasonic as the original 520W model’s manufacturer. Verify the label on the actual unit or listing; a similar product name is not enough to establish that reviews or specifications apply. Hardware Secrets’ review and Antec’s discontinued-products page can help distinguish the legacy product from current models.
What the reviews establish—and what they do not
AnandTech’s May 31, 2011 review called the HCG-520 a decent mainstream PSU and recorded a $60 price and three-year warranty at that time. The review praised performance, voltage regulation for an affordable unit, and quiet operation at light loads; it also reported that the fan became moderately loud at higher loads. These are findings about a 2011 review sample, not a test of any unit currently offered secondhand. Read AnandTech’s conclusion.
A later review reached a more cautious value judgment. Tech-Review.de’s August 26, 2014 assessment praised protection circuits, components, cable lengths, and voltage regulation, but criticized noise under load and price. In that reviewer’s market, it preferred the Antec True Power Classic 450C at approximately the same price, citing efficiency, platform, case size, and noise. Its prices and comparison were local and historical, not a current market comparison. Read the Tech-Review.de assessment.

Check power capacity and connectors against your build
The reviewed unit’s +12V rail is rated at 40A, equivalent to 480W. AnandTech describes two 6/8-pin PCIe connectors on one cable, a 4+4-pin CPU connector, and a 24-pin motherboard cable. Confirm the actual unit’s label and cable set, since a listing name alone does not prove its connectors or condition. The 520W headline rating should not substitute for checking the requirements of your particular components. AnandTech’s review and Hardware Secrets’ review provide historical specifications.
- Confirm the exact PSU model from its label, not just the listing title.
- Check that the +12V capacity and required CPU and GPU connectors match your parts.
- Inspect for physical damage and confirm that the cables included are the ones your build needs.
- Ask about operating history and test status; the available evidence cannot establish the condition of an individual used unit.
Compare the used price with a warranted alternative
A US eBay page observed in September 2026 showed one used HCG-520 listed for US$37.95, with no returns accepted. That is a single asking-price observation, not a completed sale, market average, proof that the unit works, or evidence of fair value. See the observed eBay listing.

Antec’s current product page lists the new NeoECO Classic 550 V2 (NE550C V2), a 550W Bronze PSU with a five-year warranty and OCP, OVP, UVP, SCP, OPP, and NLO protections. The page provides a useful new-unit comparison, but does not establish its live price or availability in every region. Check Antec’s specifications.
| Choice | Evidence available | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Used original HCG-520 | One US listing observed in September 2026 asked US$37.95 and offered no returns; operation and fair value were not established. Listing | Delivered price, exact model, condition, history, included cables, return terms, and fit for your system. |
| New Antec NeoECO Classic 550 V2 | Antec lists a new 550W Bronze model with a five-year warranty and the specified protections; regional live price and availability are not stated. Specifications | Check the price and availability where you live, then compare warranty, capacity, connectors, and case fit. |
Do not judge the HCG-520 as a bargain by comparing a used asking price with its 2011 $60 price. Compare the used unit’s total delivered cost and return protection with a new, warranted PSU actually available to you. The evidence does not support a universal age-based rule for discarding a PSU; it also cannot tell you whether a particular used unit is safe or functional.

Verdict
The original HCG-520 was a credible budget option in its time, but the current bargain verdict depends on the individual unit and the alternatives in your region. Consider it only after verifying its identity, condition, cables, protections, and suitability for your parts—and only if the price and seller terms make the risk worthwhile beside a new PSU with a warranty.
