An award is worth entering when the recognition matters to the people you want to reach, the judging process is credible, your work fits the category, and the likely value justifies the full cost in money and time. Before paying an entry fee, decide what you want from the award and check the organizer, rules, evidence requirements, and any costs that could follow a win.
Start with what you want the award to do
Be specific about the outcome you want. Possible reasons include building customer confidence, gaining recognition among peers, attracting press, supporting recruitment, recognising a team, learning through the application process, or competing for a prize. These are possible benefits, not guaranteed results; ACCA outlines several reasons organisations may enter awards (ACCA).
Then ask who needs to notice the result. An award may carry weight among specialists, customers, partners, or journalists in one field while being unfamiliar to the general public. The exact-title article’s available search excerpt also emphasizes audience recognition and checking who operates a program before paying (Corporate Vision).
If you cannot name a relevant audience or a useful purpose for a shortlist or win, the application may not be worth the opportunity cost. If you can, decide in advance how you would use the result—for example, in a substantiated case study, client communication, team recognition, or recruitment.

Check whether the award and its judging are credible
Do not judge an award by its name, trophy, or entry fee alone. Look for evidence that the organizer and process are real, identifiable, and sufficiently transparent for you to assess.
- Organizer: Is the organization identifiable, with a track record you can verify?
- Rules and criteria: Are eligibility requirements, category definitions, judging criteria, and scoring explained?
- Judges: Are judges named or are their qualifications described? Is there information about independence and conflicts of interest?
- Process: Does the organizer explain how entries are assessed and how conflicts are handled?
- Past results: Can you verify previous winners and understand what winning represents?
- Fees and selectivity: Are charges disclosed, and is there evidence that selection is meaningful, such as a credible shortlist?
AwardGrade’s methodology separates the integrity of an award’s process from the recognition a win carries. Its framework can help you check public disclosures, but it is one evaluator’s approach—not a universal official standard. Missing information is a reason to treat a point as unknown and ask questions, not proof by itself of misconduct (AwardGrade methodology).
A 2018 Awards Opinion Exchange report found that 89% of surveyed businesses ranked the credibility of the organizing company among their top three influences when choosing an award; 69% did so for a clear scoring system, and 68% for confidence in judging integrity (Awards Opinion Exchange 2018). These are historical survey results, not a current measure of every market or award.

Calculate the full cost, not just the entry fee
Build a realistic estimate before committing. An application can require substantial work even when the listed fee seems manageable.

- Staff time to gather evidence, write, review, and approve the submission
- Time from customers or colleagues who provide information or testimonials
- Editing, design, or production work
- Travel and attendance costs if there is a ceremony or related event
- Any post-win charges, such as optional trophy purchases or a licence to use an award mark
Costs and support arrangements vary by program. For example, RIBA says its entry fee depends on project contract value and that financial support may be available case by case (RIBA Regional Awards). A fee alone does not establish whether an award is good or poor quality. Compare the full cost with the outcome you identified, rather than assuming a win will repay the expense.
Confirm category fit and evidence readiness
Read the current category definition and assessment criteria before drafting. Your work should genuinely qualify and answer what the judges say they will assess; forcing a project into a loosely related category can weaken an otherwise strong entry.

Check whether your results are mature enough to support your claims. BASDA advises entrants to wait when customer results or persuasive metrics are not yet available, and cautions against entering an inappropriate category (BASDA).
Requirements differ across awards. Cannes Lions, for example, asks entrants to support statistics and results with verifiable evidence. Its examples include press coverage, third-party analytics, certified measurement reports, client-confirmed results, and dated dashboards. Its guidance also calls for a clear link between objectives and outcomes and evidence of real-world impact; these are Cannes Lions requirements and examples, not rules that apply to every award (Cannes Lions entry guides). Julie Jihyun Kang, CEO and Managing Partner of Serviceplan Korea and an Innovation Jury Member at Cannes Lions 2024, put the storytelling principle this way: “The case film is the emotional engine of your entry. So don’t overdramatise, keep it simple and sincere.”

Compare the actual awards you could enter
If more than one award is a plausible fit, compare them on the same criteria instead of choosing by familiarity or headline prestige. A simple checklist can expose important differences:

- Does the intended audience recognize the award?
- Can you verify the organizer’s track record, judging process, and judge qualifications?
- Are the category, eligibility rules, and criteria a genuine match?
- What evidence and staff effort does the application require?
- Are past winners and the level of selectivity clear?
- Are all fees and possible post-win costs disclosed?
- Can you find useful feedback for entrants, or a plan for using the result?
- Does the deadline leave enough time to prepare a strong, approved submission?
Use the published rubric, not assumptions about an award’s reputation. As one example of why, the 2026 Australian Export Awards page assigns 40% of assessment to business story and national benefit, 20% to the national category, and 40% to business and export growth strategy (Australian Export Awards). Those weights apply to that program and cycle only; another award may assess entirely different things.
If you enter, manage the application as a project
Give the application an owner, a deadline, and a clear outcome. Before submission:
- Choose the category: Check the current eligibility rules and category wording against the work you are entering.
- Map the evidence: For each criterion, list the claim you will make and the records or sources that support it.
- Explain the result: Connect objectives to outcomes, provide context, and use metrics that are relevant and verifiable.
- Get approvals: Secure permission for customer quotations and for any commercially sensitive information you plan to share.
- Check the submission: Follow word limits and format rules, confirm every claim, and proofread before sending.
- Plan communications: Decide how to describe a shortlist or win accurately, without implying that the award proves more than it does.
Know when to wait or skip it
Wait if the work is promising but key customer results are not ready, the necessary evidence is unavailable, or you need more time to meet the category criteria. Skip the award if the organizer or judging process is too opaque to assess, the category is a stretch, or the total cost and effort outweigh any plausible value.

Time is a real consideration, but old survey figures should not be mistaken for current prevalence. In the Awards Opinion Exchange 2018 report, 50% of respondents who had never entered an award cited “too time consuming”; another 50% said awards were not something they had considered. Those figures describe that report’s respondents in 2018, not today’s businesses generally (Awards Opinion Exchange 2018).
Fees, deadlines, categories, eligibility, and judging rules can change. Confirm the current details directly with the organizer before committing. There is no general award-entry return-on-investment figure established by the cited evidence, so do not treat a win as a guaranteed source of sales, press, or other commercial return.
