Yes. SRS (Simple Realtime Server) is free, MIT-licensed software, but the license does not pay for the always-on computer or cloud server, internet connection, power, storage, monitoring, or backup needed for a 24/7 YouTube stream. You also need to configure a path from your media source through SRS to YouTube; installing SRS alone does not start a broadcast.
What “free” means for SRS
The SRS project repository says SRS is licensed under the MIT license and notes that some third-party libraries have their own licenses. Check the notices applicable to the specific build and use case. The software license is free; keeping a 24/7 streaming pipeline running can still incur hosting and operating costs.
SRS documentation covers Docker and remote-server deployment, but the available guidance does not establish a current hosting price or uptime guarantee. Your total cost depends on where you run it and how you provide continuous connectivity, storage, monitoring, and recovery.
How SRS fits into a YouTube stream
SRS is a media server with RTMP and other protocol support. Its project repository includes Docker startup and FFmpeg/OBS examples. YouTube separately requires the Live server URL and stream key in the encoder workflow, so an SRS setup needs a configured route from the source or relay to YouTube.

The SRS v8 Docker getting-started guide demonstrates a looped FFmpeg input sent into SRS. That is a documented looping pattern, not a guarantee that every file, configuration, host, or YouTube connection will remain live indefinitely. Test the full pipeline with your intended media and network conditions.
What you need to operate it continuously
- An always-on host: a computer at home or a remote server that can run SRS and any source or relay software in your setup.
- Continuous power and network access: a home installation depends on local power and internet continuity; remote hosting shifts those operational dependencies to the hosting environment.
- Storage and recording plans: decide whether you need a local recording and where it will be stored.
- Monitoring and recovery: watch the stream and have a way to respond to encoder, server, or network failures. SRS’s free license does not provide an uptime commitment.
SRS guidance represents both local Linux/Docker and remote-server deployment, but does not specify a minimum hardware configuration or compare hosting providers, prices, service levels, or expected uptime. Choose a host based on the workload and the continuity you can provide rather than assuming that a particular machine or deployment is guaranteed to stay live.

YouTube settings and stream-key security
In YouTube Live Control Room, use the stream URL and stream key provided for the broadcast in your encoder configuration. YouTube describes the key as a credential that lets an encoder send a feed; treat it like a password. Keep it out of public configuration, screenshots, and logs. If it is compromised, YouTube says you can reset it.
Use the endpoint supplied by Live Control Room. YouTube supports RTMPS, an encrypted RTMP connection over TLS/SSL, when your encoder supports it. Confirm that SRS and the rest of your pipeline are configured for the endpoint and protocol you select.

Plan for YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete archive of a continuous 24/7 broadcast, arrange local recording rather than relying on YouTube to preserve the entire stream. You can also consider dividing the broadcast into shorter sessions. Check Live Control Room behavior before publishing because platform interfaces and behavior can change.
Test, monitor, and prepare for failure
YouTube recommends testing the encoder setup, checking the Live Control Room preview, monitoring audio and video quality, confirming that a local archive file is growing, and testing backup-encoder failover. These checks help expose problems before and during a continuous broadcast; they are not uptime guarantees for SRS, YouTube, or the host.

- Verify that the media source reaches SRS and that the configured output reaches YouTube.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm audio and video are present and stable.
- If recording locally, confirm that the recording is being written and that there is enough storage for the intended duration.
- Test your backup or restart procedure before relying on it during a live broadcast.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive a feed: confirm that the encoder is using the current YouTube stream URL and stream key, and verify the route from the source through SRS to YouTube.
- The stream stops when a home computer or network drops: a local deployment depends on that computer, its power, and its internet connection. Consider remote hosting if those dependencies are unreliable, while accounting for its separate costs and operational requirements.
- The stream key may have been exposed: reset it in YouTube and update the encoder configuration; avoid leaving credentials in logs or public files.
- A complete 24-hour-plus archive is missing: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Use local recording if preserving the full broadcast matters.
- A restart or backup does not restore the broadcast: test failover and recovery in advance, and inspect the source, SRS, network, and YouTube encoder status to locate the failing part of the pipeline.
