SpaceX lists 1,614 metric ton-force (3.5 million pounds-force) for Starship. NASA reports that the flown SLS Block 1 produces 8.8 million pounds-force at maximum thrust during launch and ascent, a higher figure.
What “most powerful” means in this comparison
Here, power means launch thrust: the force a launch vehicle produces to lift off and ascend. It is a useful way to compare rockets, but it is not a complete measure of what they can do. Payload to a particular destination and demonstrated operational performance are separate questions.
SpaceX describes Starship as the combined Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy launch system, a fully reusable transportation system. Its vehicle page calls it “the world’s most powerful launch vehicle ever developed” and lists 1,614 metric ton-force, or 3.5 million pounds-force. That is a manufacturer description, not an independent ranking, and the page does not clearly identify which exact configuration the thrust figure describes.

NASA’s SLS page says: “During launch and ascent, SLS produces 8.8 million lbs. of maximum thrust, 15% more thrust than the Saturn V rocket.” The distinction between variants matters: the higher Block 1B and Block 2 values should not be presented as thrust from the SLS that flew Artemis I, and NASA describes Block 2 as a future configuration.

What Starship’s September 2026 flight demonstrated
The Associated Press reported that Starship reached orbit for the first time on September 28, 2026, carrying 26 Starlink satellites. Flight controllers ended the mission early; after about three hours, the spacecraft splashed down north of Hawaii, tipped over, and erupted in flames. Reaching orbit was a milestone, but that test did not demonstrate that every planned mission duration or recovery capability was operational.
Does higher thrust make a rocket better?
No single thrust number settles which vehicle is best for every mission. Thrust compares launch force, not payload delivered to a specific orbit or destination. Nor does a design claim establish routine service: the September 2026 Starship flight demonstrated an orbital milestone, while ending early. To assess a mission, readers need to compare destination-specific payload capability and the performance actually demonstrated, as well as thrust.
