Bloomberg reported in November 2024 that Sony was in early development of a portable console intended to play PS5 games on the go. Sony has not publicly confirmed that specific project in the sources reviewed as of October 4, 2026, and the report said it could still be years from launch—or be cancelled. It is not an announced Switch competitor with confirmed specifications or a release date.
What was reported about Sony’s handheld?
Bloomberg’s November 25, 2024 report, citing unnamed people familiar with development, said Sony was working on a portable console designed to play PlayStation 5 games away from a television. The report described the work as being at an early stage, said a launch was likely years away, and noted Sony could decide not to bring the device to market. Read Bloomberg’s report.
That makes “true PS5 gaming handheld” a useful shorthand for the reported idea, not an official product name or verified technical description. No confirmed name, price, specifications, PS5 game compatibility list, or release date was identified. “Challenge Nintendo’s Switch” is likewise a comparison implied by the portable-console category, not a confirmed Sony positioning statement.
Has Sony confirmed the standalone device?
No. As of October 4, 2026, the reviewed sources do not establish that Sony has announced or released the standalone handheld described by Bloomberg. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino discussed the company’s broader hardware strategy in a June 2026 interview, saying, “My belief that a console is necessary for playing games hasn’t changed,” and that Sony wants to continue providing its own game consoles. Those remarks indicate continued interest in consoles, but do not verify Bloomberg’s specific report. Read the reported interview.

Sony’s 2024 corporate presentation also described a strategy to “Introduce Non-PS5 Players to PlayStation via Peripherals.” That is general strategy language, not an announcement of a native-playback handheld. Sony reported 56 million cumulative PS5 sell-through units as of April 30, 2024; that historical console figure provides platform context, but says nothing directly about demand for a portable device. See Sony’s 2024 presentation materials.
How is the PlayStation Portal different?
The PlayStation Portal is an existing handheld remote player, not proof that Sony has released a standalone device that runs PS5 games locally. Sony describes Portal as a way to play PS5 games over Wi-Fi, and it also supports cloud streaming for eligible games and subscriptions. Sony’s March 2026 update added a 1080p High Quality mode and other user-experience refinements. These streaming features do not establish native local playback of PS5 games. Sony’s Portal product page and March 2026 update describe the current product.

Sony said Portal cloud-streaming monthly users grew 162% year over year in January 2026, and more than 50% of Portal users were PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers at the time of the March update. These are figures about Portal usage and its users, not measured demand for Bloomberg’s reported standalone project.
What would need to be confirmed before comparing it with a Switch?
A fair comparison depends on information Sony has not confirmed for the reported device. The key distinction is whether it runs games locally or streams them: that affects internet dependence, performance conditions, and whether play can continue offline. It would also matter whether it requires a separate PS5 console or subscription, which existing games it supports, and what its screen, controls, portability, price, and availability are.

What should prospective buyers do now?
If you want a portable way to access PS5 games today, evaluate the PlayStation Portal on its actual streaming features and requirements; do not buy it expecting native, offline PS5 gameplay. If you are waiting for a Sony handheld that plays games locally, there is no confirmed product to preorder or compare on specifications yet. Treat future claims about price, launch timing, Switch competition, or game compatibility as unverified until Sony announces them.
