Snapchat is introducing a 5GB free limit for saved Memories, not charging for every post or Story. If your Memories exceed 5GB, you can pay for more storage or download them. Snapchat Support says qualifying Memories will begin moving to archive status in January 2027—not be immediately deleted.
What Snapchat’s storage change covers
Memories are the private Snapchat area where you save photos and videos. Snap announced Memories Storage Plans on September 26, 2025, changing the previous policy of having no stated storage cap. The new complimentary allowance is up to 5GB, and Snap says most Snapchatters are below that threshold. Snap’s announcement
This is a storage change for saved Memories; it is not a fee for each post or Story you create. Snap said more than 1 trillion Memories had been saved since the feature launched in 2016. Snap’s announcement

Will Snapchat delete your old Memories?
According to Snapchat Support, no Memories will be archived before January 2027. Starting that month, Memories that are more than one year old and fall outside your oldest 5GB will be archived. Snapchat says archived Memories remain stored on its service, but appear as thumbnails; you must upgrade your storage to open, edit, or share them. Downloading them is the documented alternative. - Export your Memories. Use Snapchat’s download process to save the files to a phone or computer.
- Verify the copies. Open a selection of downloaded photos and videos to confirm they play and are stored where you expect.
- Make a second backup. Keep another copy on removable storage or a separate backup service. For a USB drive, check its capacity and connector, and confirm it works with the phone or computer you will use.
Downloading gives you copies outside Snapchat, but it does not automatically restore them to Memories or preserve Snapchat’s in-app organization and features. Keep the exported files organized and backed up if you may need them later.
