Bethesda and id Software call the game’s customizable demon-arena challenge Ripatorium. It supports timed or endless encounters, and later updates expanded its settings and added Revelations content. The official notes do not say that “Slaughter Mode” is another name for Ripatorium.
What is Ripatorium?
Ripatorium is DOOM: The Dark Ages’ custom arena mode: players configure demon encounters and fight them in a selected arena. Bethesda introduced it in Update 2, released August 7, 2025. The Encounter Manager lets players choose demon types and quantities, set a time limit or enable Endless mode, and adjust enemy respawns. The original update included three arenas: City of Ry’uul, Village of Khalim, and Harbor of Souls, plus a jukebox for choosing game music. Bethesda’s Update 2 release notes describe the mode and its initial settings.
What can players customize in the later updates?
Ripatorium 3.0
Update 4, released July 7, 2026, describes Ripatorium 3.0 and adds more encounter controls. Players can save and load personal encounter presets, use continuous spawns, configure health and ammo pickups, adjust Berserk pickup behavior, and set BFC ammunition from zero to three. These are documented Ripatorium features; they do not establish a separate mode called Slaughter Mode. See the Update 4 release notes.
Revelations arenas and content
The Revelations expansion adds three Ripatorium arenas—Hell’s Core, Osseus, and Classic—along with Revelations demons, a fully upgraded Revelations loadout, and six id Software encounter presets. The official notes say this Revelations Ripatorium content unlocks after completing the Master Arenas. The Update 4 notes list the arenas and unlock condition.

Availability and pricing details are in Bethesda’s Revelations announcement.
Is Slaughter Mode a separate mode or another name for Ripatorium?
The official Update 2 and Update 4 materials reviewed use the name Ripatorium and do not identify “Slaughter Mode” as a distinct mode or an alternate name for Ripatorium. They also provide no rules, release date, or platform availability for a separate mode under the Slaughter Mode name. This is what those official sources establish; it is not proof that no later announcement exists.
