Restream can carry a long YouTube broadcast, but it is a risky choice for one uninterrupted 24/7 stream. Restream says its server may undergo maintenance and restart during continuous streams longer than 24 hours, and recommends restarting the stream every 24 hours. YouTube allows long live streams, but its automatic archive covers only streams under 12 hours. Plan for restarts, monitoring, and separate replay handling rather than assuming one stream will run and save reliably forever.
Is Restream good for running a 24/7 YouTube stream?
It can be part of the setup, but Restream’s own guidance makes it a poor fit if “24/7” means one uninterrupted broadcast with no operator intervention. Restream says it does not impose a stream-duration cap in its cited help article, then warns that its server may be restarted for maintenance during continuous streams exceeding 24 hours. It suggests a daily restart to prevent potential issues. Restream’s “How long can I stream for?” guidance also says streams beyond 24 hours may require a custom pricing plan through Sales.
That warning is not a published uptime guarantee or evidence that a particular stream will fail. It does mean you should not treat a standard Restream connection as guaranteed unattended continuity. Confirm the terms for your intended workflow with Restream, and build planned restarts, monitoring, and recovery into the operation.
Can you stream on YouTube 24/7?
YouTube itself has no duration limit for a live stream, according to Restream’s YouTube duration guidance. That does not remove the need to keep the source and relay operating, watch stream health, or recover from interruptions.

- ISO Recordings: Capture and save all video inputs separately with customizable resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, enabling better post-production control and quality
YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend checking the preview before going live and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. Its encoder guidance recommends testing quality against the available upload bitrate and using RTMPS where supported. These are operating practices, not a promise that any encoder, relay, or internet connection will remain online indefinitely.
Will YouTube save a 24/7 livestream?
Not as one complete automatic replay. Restream says YouTube archives streams only when they are less than 12 hours long. YouTube’s encoder instructions likewise state that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

If viewers need an on-demand replay, divide the broadcast into sessions shorter than 12 hours and confirm that each session finishes and processes as expected, or maintain a separate recording and archive workflow. A continuous channel feed and a complete replay are separate requirements; YouTube’s automatic archive threshold does not provide the latter for a 24/7 stream.
What you need before connecting Restream to YouTube
- Enable live streaming: YouTube must have live streaming enabled for the channel. Restream’s setup article says the connecting account must be the channel owner, not a manager or editor.
- Verify the channel and allow activation time: Restream says YouTube requires phone verification and a 24-hour wait before a channel can stream for the first time. YouTube’s general tips also say the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. See Restream’s YouTube connection instructions and YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Choose a source that can stay up: YouTube accepts streams from software or hardware encoders. A hardware encoder may be appropriate for a video source, but buying one does not prevent a Restream server restart or establish that the full setup is suitable for unattended 24/7 operation.
- Protect the stream key: YouTube uses the stream key with the server URL to direct the encoder feed. Treat the key like a password. If it is compromised, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings; do not share it or expose it in public logs. See YouTube’s stream settings instructions.
How to operate a long stream more safely
- Test the full path before relying on it. Send a private or unlisted test through the same source and Restream connection you intend to use. Check the YouTube preview, audio, video, and stream health; test the recovery process rather than assuming it will work.
- Plan a daily restart. Schedule a controlled stop and restart at least every 24 hours, as Restream recommends for continuous streams, instead of waiting for possible maintenance. For a 24/7 channel, arrange the transition so the next session can start promptly and someone or an alert can identify a failed restart.
- Monitor the broadcast. Watch YouTube stream health and check audio and video continuously or use a monitoring arrangement that alerts an operator when the feed or quality fails. A scheduled restart is not a substitute for monitoring.
- Set up replay separately. If archiving matters, create sessions under 12 hours or record the source independently. Verify the resulting replay after each session.
- Document recovery steps. Keep the encoder and YouTube settings, stream-key reset path, restart procedure, and contact/escalation details accessible to the person responsible for the channel.
YouTube’s latency and DVR controls affect viewer delay and the ability to pause or rewind; they do not prevent a disconnect or make a long-running relay continuous. For encoder setup, use YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder guidance, and test settings against your actual upload capacity.

Alternatives for keeping a YouTube stream running
There are three broad approaches, and each solves a different part of the problem:
- StreamNeo — cloud playback for uploaded videos: StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded recordings or a playlist. Upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; the cloud continues playback without a home computer or OBS staying on. It offers any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream; the first day is free with no card. It is for uploaded video playback, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo.
- Restream as a relay: Useful when you need its relay workflow, but its guidance warns about a possible server restart after more than 24 continuous hours. Plan and verify daily restart and recovery; do not assume one session will also produce a complete YouTube replay.
- Your own software or hardware encoder: This gives you control over the source and settings, but the source device, power, network, and operator or monitoring process must be dependable. YouTube supports encoder-based streams, but the cited guidance does not establish that a particular encoder model or configuration is proven for unattended 24/7 use.
Compare options by whether the video source can run unattended, how it recovers after a failure, the provider’s restart policy and any contractual uptime commitment, how replays are handled, whether prerecorded scheduling is supported, and which plan limits apply. The cited information does not establish a Restream uptime SLA or a model-by-model encoder comparison.
