Ratatan is worth buying if you enjoy rhythm-based combat, repeated roguelike runs, and online co-op for up to four players. Version 1.0 launched on 14 October 2026 for PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. The game is less suitable if you need couch co-op, original Nintendo Switch support, PlayStation cross-play immediately, or a completely settled online service.

What Ratatan is
Ratatan is a rhythm roguelike action game. It combines rhythm-game inputs with side-scrolling battles, asking you to enter command sequences on the beat, direct Cobuns, position Ratatans, and decide when to advance or retreat. Steam describes battles involving more than 100 characters, so the action is about coordinating a group rather than controlling a lone fighter through conventional attacks.

Your commands are tied to musical timing. Successful sequences direct your units and keep the attack flowing; mistakes can leave your group exposed. Positioning matters because enemies, hazards, and objectives occupy the side-scrolling battlefield. Retreating is also part of the design: a run is not simply a march from one fight to the next, and choosing when to preserve a run can matter as much as pressing an additional attack.

The result is a game that rewards two different skills. You need the timing and pattern recognition associated with a rhythm game, but you also need the route, equipment, and risk decisions of a roguelike. If you prefer completely free-form action with no beat-based input, the command system may feel restrictive. If you like learning patterns and improving through repetition, it is the central attraction.

Digital versus physical Switch 2 purchase
The physical Nintendo Switch 2 edition is a game card containing the game data. That makes it a conventional physical copy rather than a card that merely unlocks a download. Availability, stock, and regional pricing can vary by retailer, so check the listing for your territory before ordering.

Does Ratatan have online multiplayer?
Yes. Online co-op supports up to four players. Offline single-player is also supported, and all content can be played alone, so you do not need a group to access the campaign or progression systems.

Cross-play coverage
Cross-play currently works between Steam, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox Series X|S. PlayStation 5 cross-play is planned, but the developer has not committed to a date because platform approval is required.

Required console subscriptions
- Switch 2: Nintendo Switch Online is required for online play.
- PlayStation 5: PlayStation Plus is required.
- Xbox Series X|S: An Xbox Game Pass subscription tier that includes online multiplayer is required.
- Steam: No console online subscription is involved, although an internet connection and the normal Steam account requirements apply.
How invitations and saves work
Rooms can be joined with room codes, and platform invitation features are available. Each participant keeps multiplayer progress in that player’s own save data rather than relying on a single host’s file. That is useful for groups whose schedules do not always match: you can continue your own progression when the group is offline.
What local co-op means here
Ratatan does not support local co-op on one console or PC. Two people cannot share a screen with separate controllers. If playing together is essential, plan on separate systems and an online connection.
How replayable is Ratatan?
Replayability comes from the interaction of repeated roguelike adventures, equipment and upgrade choices, Oath Levels, episode unlocks, and boss encounters. The game is designed to be replayed rather than completed once in a straight line.

Roguelike runs and build decisions
Each adventure asks you to make decisions about equipment and upgrades while handling rhythm-command combat. A failed or completed run feeds into your understanding of enemy patterns and your preferred setup. The value is not just a larger collection of unlocks; it is learning which choices work with your timing, unit positioning, and willingness to take risks.
Oath Levels and episode progression
After the first run, raising your Oath Level unlocks Episode 2. Further episodes require additional Oath Level increases. This creates a progression ladder in which the game expects repeated adventures instead of treating the first clear as the end.
Version 1.0 content
The full release adds Episodes 3 and 4, World 6, the final story boss, all eight Dark Ratatan encounters, new Mythic weapons and accessories, and an orchestrated ending song. These additions give long-term players new goals beyond the initial episodes and expand the equipment and boss pool used during repeat runs.

Welcome Mode reduces early difficulty and the damage caused by repeated adventures. It is intended to make the opening learning curve less punishing, but it is disabled in co-op. A new player can therefore use it while learning alone, yet a group must play without that adjustment.

How long is the game?
No reliable completion-time statistic has been published. Your time will depend on how many runs you need to raise Oath Levels, how much equipment you pursue, and whether you play the later episodes and Dark Ratatan encounters. Treat the game as a repeat-run progression system rather than a title with a single advertised campaign length.
Current reception and post-launch condition
Steam currently shows 86% positive from 979 English-language reviews overall. Reviews from the last 30 days are 43% positive from 122 reviews. The difference indicates that the broader historical reception is favorable while recent feedback is considerably more mixed.

Launch announcements document active fixes for achievements, Episode 2, multiplayer connections, and other quality-of-life issues. The developer is also investigating reports of connection problems, disconnections, and gameplay issues. That does not make the game unplayable by definition, but online reliability should be treated as an active post-launch consideration rather than a settled feature.

- You want a rhythm-action game with strategic unit control instead of a conventional action game.
- You enjoy repeating runs to improve timing, builds, and route decisions.
- You will play alone or with friends online on Steam, Switch 2, or Xbox Series X|S.

Setting up an online co-op session
- Choose a supported platform combination. For cross-platform play, use Steam, Switch 2, or Xbox Series X|S. Include PlayStation 5 players only if everyone accepts that PS5 cross-play is not currently available.
- Confirm the online requirement. Check that console players have Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus, or an Xbox Game Pass plan with online multiplayer, as applicable.
- Update the game. Install the newest available patch, since launch fixes cover achievements, Episode 2, connection behavior, and quality-of-life issues.
- Create or join a room. Use a room code or the platform’s invitation feature to bring in up to three other players.
- Start with roles and expectations agreed. Because commands depend on rhythm and positioning, decide whether the group will prioritize cautious progression or riskier upgrades before a run begins.
- Check each player’s save afterward. Multiplayer progress is stored in each participant’s own save data.

Buy with realistic expectations about ongoing fixes, the lack of couch co-op, the missing original-Switch and GOG versions, and the fact that PlayStation 5 cross-play still requires platform approval. If any of those limitations conflicts with how you plan to play, waiting is the safer choice.
