Usually, PlayStation Plus Essential is the tier to consider if you subscribe mainly to claim and play Monthly Games. All three tiers include Monthly Games, so Extra or Premium is worth the higher price only if you also use its game catalogs, trials, or streaming features. Whether Essential itself is worth paying for depends on how many offered games you actually play and whether you use its other benefits.
Which PlayStation Plus tier fits Monthly Games?
Essential is the lowest-priced tier on PlayStation’s US plan page, and it includes Monthly Games. Extra adds the Game Catalog; Premium adds further benefits such as the Classics Catalog, game trials, and streaming features. If you do not use those additions, they do not make the higher tiers a better deal for Monthly Games alone.

PlayStation adds new Monthly Games each calendar month. They are available to download and play at no extra cost while your membership is active; claiming a game does not turn it into a permanent purchase independent of PS Plus. What does PlayStation Plus cost in the US?
PlayStation’s US plan page displayed the following recurring subscription prices when accessed in 2026. Prices and offers can change, so check the page and renewal terms for your account before subscribing.

At the displayed US Essential rates, paying monthly for twelve months totals $131.88; the twelve-month option is $79.99, which PlayStation labels 39% off twelve months versus one month. The annual option lowers the displayed yearly spend but requires more money up front. The table reflects the US page, not prices for other regions.
How to decide whether Essential is worth it for you
There is no universal dollar value for a Monthly Game: a game you claim but never play may add little value to your subscription. Judge the membership by the games and benefits you would genuinely use.

- Do you claim and play the offers? If you regularly try the monthly selection, Essential may be useful. If you claim only a small share and rarely play them, the subscription may not justify its recurring cost on that basis.
- Would you otherwise buy the games you enjoy? Compare the membership cost with what you would actually spend on games you want, not the combined list price of every offer.
- Do you need online multiplayer? If the games you play require PS Plus for online multiplayer, that benefit may matter alongside Monthly Games.
- Do you use other Essential benefits? Cloud storage, discounts, and Share Play can contribute value if they fit your habits.
- How certain are you about staying subscribed? At the displayed US rates, monthly or three-month billing can suit someone who is unsure about a full year. Compare the total cost and renewal terms in your account before choosing.
What happens to claimed Monthly Games if you cancel?
You can continue using membership benefits through the end of the subscription period you have already paid for; cancelling does not end access immediately. After the membership ends, subscription games downloaded at no cost—including Monthly Games—are not available unless you renew. PlayStation’s cancellation guidance also says PS Plus benefits such as online storage and online multiplayer end with the membership. Redeemed packs, avatars, and discounted purchases are treated differently from subscription games. PlayStation’s US plans page says that from January 2026, PS4 games will be added only intermittently. This is a statement about future PS4 additions; it does not establish a similar schedule for PS5 games. Catalog selections can also change over time and vary by tier, so check the current games page if a specific title is central to your decision.
