Phantom Blade Zero is best described as a Soulslike-influenced action RPG, not a conventional Soulslike. S-GAME founder and CEO Soulframe Liang says the game combines ideas from Souls games and hack-and-slash titles but is “neither of them.” That distinction matters: you can expect checkpoint bells, demanding multi-stage bosses, parry and dodge timing, weapon-based builds and escalating danger, but also fast cinematic combos, acrobatic movement, adjustable difficulty and a strongly wuxia-inspired identity.

If you are deciding whether it will satisfy an Elden Ring, Sekiro or Ninja Gaiden fan, judge the mechanics rather than the label. Phantom Blade Zero deliberately sits between those traditions.

What “Soulslike” means in this case

“Soulslike” is a useful shorthand, not a strict technical category. Players usually use it for action games built around demanding enemy encounters, readable attack patterns, deliberate defensive timing, meaningful death or checkpoint pressure, difficult bosses and character progression that rewards experimentation. Individual games can use only some of those conventions.

Phantom Blade Zero displays enough of those signals to make the comparison reasonable. Its official Steam listing includes the user-defined “Souls-like” tag, alongside Action RPG, Hack and Slash, Martial Arts, Wuxia and Open World. That tag records how Steam users categorize the game; it is not a formal genre declaration from S-GAME.

Liang’s description is the clearest answer. In an Epic Games Store interview, he said some people would call the game a Soulslike in the style of Elden Ring while others would call it a hack-and-slash game like Ninja Gaiden. His conclusion was: “Phantom Blade Zero, for sure, incorporates some essence of both, but it’s neither of them.” S-GAME’s goal was an accessible action game that learned from both traditions instead of reproducing either one.

Why players see Soulslike elements

Checkpoint-style bells

TechRadar’s hands-on preview describes ornate bells that function as checkpoints. A checkpoint that structures progress and gives difficult encounters a clear restart point is one of the most recognizable Soulslike-adjacent ideas in the game. The bell system is therefore a stronger signal than a store tag when you are trying to predict the moment-to-moment experience.

Demanding, multi-stage bosses

The same preview reports challenging bosses with multiple stages. Multi-phase fights require players to read changing patterns, preserve resources and adapt after an apparent victory. That structure is familiar to Souls players, even though Phantom Blade Zero presents its attacks through a faster, more cinematic combat system.

Parries, dodges and enemy reading

Preview coverage specifically calls out parry timing and dangerous encounters. Those mechanics make defensive timing part of the learning process: success is not only about having a stronger weapon, but also about recognizing an opening and responding at the correct moment. Official PlayStation material likewise emphasizes weapon mastery and dangerous fights.

Build choices and escalating challenge

The official product information describes more than 30 main weapons, more than 20 Phantom Edges, accessories, summons and other build options. Your equipment choices can therefore change how you approach a fight. The game’s enemies and bosses are presented as a rising challenge rather than a purely cinematic sequence in which the player simply follows prompts.

Why it is not a conventional Soulslike

Combat is built for expression and speed

PlayStation describes seamless combos that are easy to learn but rewarding to master. TechRadar’s demo account adds combo chaining, cinematic dodges, acrobatic movement, platforming and stealth. Those features point toward character-action design: the player is encouraged to link techniques, move aggressively and use the environment, not merely wait behind a shield for a single safe counterattack.

Difficulty is adjustable

The hands-on preview identifies three difficulty settings. The State of Play presentation names the modes Wayfarer, Hellwalker and Sixty-Six Days, with options ranging from a story-focused route to more advanced and adaptive enemies. The available evidence establishes selectable difficulty, but it does not specify every numerical change to enemy health, damage, movesets or artificial intelligence. Do not assume that selecting a harder mode simply applies a fixed damage multiplier.

Its identity is wuxia and “kungfupunk”

Phantom Blade Zero is set in a dark martial-arts world rather than a European medieval fantasy setting. The official PlayStation page calls it a dark wuxia action RPG powered by Unreal Engine 5 and uses the term “Kungfupunk” for its blend of wuxia cinema, punk fantasy and mechanical prosthetics. The Epic interview adds steampunk, cyberpunk, anime and manga influences. That visual and thematic language is central to the game, not a decorative skin over a standard Souls formula.

The mechanical test: what to watch for

When you read a preview or play the game, these questions provide a more reliable classification than any single marketing label.

Comparison axis What Phantom Blade Zero is documented to include What the question tells you
Combat rhythm Parry timing, dodges, seamless combos, combo chaining and weapon techniques Whether fights reward patient enemy reading, expressive strings of attacks, or both
Boss structure Challenging multi-stage bosses in the hands-on preview Whether learning patterns and adapting between phases is central to progression
Checkpoints Ornate bells described as checkpoint-setting devices Whether the game uses a recognizable Soulslike progress-and-retry loop
Difficulty Wayfarer, Hellwalker and Sixty-Six Days modes; three difficulty settings reported in the preview How much control you have over the challenge and whether enemy behavior changes by mode
Build depth 30+ main weapons, 20+ Phantom Edges on the product page, plus accessories and summons Whether equipment changes your approach rather than only raising statistics
Exploration A connected Wulin with hidden secrets, side quests, story paths and hand-guided discovery Whether exploration is open-ended, directed, or a mixture of both
Setting Wuxia, kungfupunk, mechanical prosthetics and Chinese martial-arts cinema influences What separates the game’s tone and movement from a typical medieval Souls setting

The State of Play article gives a more specific count of 25 Phantom Edges, while the official product page says more than 20. Until S-GAME standardizes that number across its materials, “20+” is the safer general description; use 25 only when attributing the State of Play figure directly.

How combat and progression fit together

The arsenal is large enough to support different combat identities. PlayStation’s product page lists more than 30 primary weapons and more than 20 Phantom Edges. The State of Play description also mentions accessories and summons. These systems give you several levers for shaping a build: a main weapon for your core moves, secondary Phantom Edges for additional techniques, and supporting equipment that can influence how you handle encounters.

That does not automatically make the game a traditional build-heavy Souls RPG. The available descriptions do not establish a specific stat system, respec process, class structure or loss-of-currency mechanic. What is established is a broad equipment and technique selection intended to make weapon mastery and experimentation meaningful.

Combat also includes stealth, platforming and acrobatic traversal in the previewed material. Those elements can change the approach before a fight begins. A player may be deciding not only which attack to parry, but also whether to reposition, take a less direct route or use movement to reach an advantageous angle.

How hard is Phantom Blade Zero?

It is designed to be challenging, but the evidence does not support calling it an unchangeable “hard-only” game. TechRadar reports three difficulty settings, and the State of Play article names Wayfarer, Hellwalker and Sixty-Six Days. The descriptions frame Wayfarer as the story-focused option and the other modes as more advanced, with adaptive enemies in the higher challenge routes.

For a player who wants the story and cinematic martial-arts presentation without committing to the toughest possible enemy behavior, the existence of Wayfarer is significant. For a player seeking a harsher test, Hellwalker and Sixty-Six Days are the modes to investigate. Because detailed tuning has not been published in the supplied material, check the in-game descriptions at launch rather than assuming exactly how each mode changes health, damage, aggression or attack patterns.

Is it open world or linear?

There is no reason to reduce Phantom Blade Zero to a simple “open world” or “linear” label. Steam includes an Open World tag, while the official PlayStation descriptions present the Wulin as a connected world containing hidden secrets, side quests and multiple story paths. They also emphasize hand-guided discovery.

That combination suggests a connected setting with optional exploration and directed narrative movement, rather than a promise of a single enormous map filled with unrestricted activity. The available information does not establish the exact map layout, fast-travel rules or how much of the world can be revisited at each story point. Expect exploration to be part of the game’s structure, but do not infer a specific open-world format from the Steam tag alone.

What the story and setting add to the classification

You play Soul, a swordsman with a wounded heart and only 66 days left to live. Framed for murdering his master, he travels through the Wulin while uncovering a conspiracy that threatens the martial world. The short lifespan gives the story an urgent premise, while the investigation supplies the darker tone suggested by the game’s hidden truths and conspiracies.

S-GAME presents the project as a spiritual rebirth of the 2010 indie RPG Rainblood: Town of Death. Liang’s interview explains that the new game draws on wuxia films and combines them with steampunk, cyberpunk, anime and manga influences. The result is a setting where martial-arts choreography, mechanical prosthetics and punk-fantasy technology belong to the same world.

Liang also said the in-house team, including publishing, exceeded 150 people across several cities, while contractors and outsourced workers numbered about ten times that figure. That production scale helps explain why the game is being positioned as a large cinematic action RPG rather than a small, narrowly focused combat experiment.

Is it more like Sekiro, Elden Ring or Ninja Gaiden?

Each comparison captures only part of the design.

Game comparison Where the comparison fits Where it breaks down
Souls games such as Elden Ring Checkpoint-style progression, difficult multi-stage bosses, parry and dodge timing, build choices and dangerous encounters Adjustable difficulty, faster cinematic combos, acrobatics and a wuxia/kungfupunk setting make it unlike a conventional Souls structure
Sekiro Precision timing, parry-focused engagement and martial-arts presentation are useful points of reference The documented arsenal includes many main weapons, Phantom Edges, accessories and summons rather than one fixed sword-centered toolkit
Ninja Gaiden and other character-action games Fast combos, expressive movement, cinematic dodges, weapon techniques and aggressive combat flow Checkpoint bells, build choices, adaptive difficulty modes and multi-stage bosses add Soulslike-adjacent structure

The best expectation is not “Elden Ring with a different art style” or “Ninja Gaiden in an open world.” It is a hybrid that borrows the pressure and learning curve of Souls games while pursuing the speed and spectacle of character-action combat.

Release date, editions and platforms

Release timing depends on the storefront and region. S-GAME’s June 2, 2026 creative-director letter moved the launch from September 9 to October 29, 2026, citing additional polishing, upgraded character models and reworked environments. The PlayStation Blog lists October 29, 2026, with a footnote that the date is October 28 in the United States and select regions. Steam lists the PC release as October 28, 2026.

Should you buy Phantom Blade Zero on PS5 or PC?

Choose the platform according to where you prefer to play rather than assuming the genre label answers the question. The PS5 page documents both editions and their included digital extras. Steam is the documented PC storefront and lists the October 28 date. The supplied platform information does not establish PC system requirements, graphics settings, frame-rate targets, cross-save support or feature parity, so those details should be confirmed on the current store page before purchase.

The more important buying decision is whether the hybrid design appeals to you. Players seeking checkpoint pressure, demanding bosses and timing-based defense may find the Soulslike elements promising. Players who want fast martial-arts combos, traversal, stealth and a selectable challenge level may be better served by its character-action side. If you want a strict replica of a particular Souls game, the developer’s own statement warns against that expectation.

The practical verdict

Call Phantom Blade Zero a Soulslike-influenced action RPG. The label is justified by its checkpoint bells, difficult multi-stage bosses, parry and dodge timing, build choices and dangerous encounters. It becomes misleading when it suggests a conventional Souls formula, because the game also emphasizes seamless combos, acrobatic movement, cinematic presentation, adjustable difficulty and a wuxia/kungfupunk world.

Use the label as a starting point, then look at the systems: how bells structure retries, how bosses change between phases, how the three difficulty routes alter encounters, and how the weapon and Phantom Edge choices affect your combat. Those details will tell you whether its particular blend is the right fit far better than a one-word genre tag.
