NASA has set 2030 as a goal for developing a lunar surface fission reactor, but that is not a confirmed launch, landing, or operational date. The project is meant to provide steady electricity through the Moon’s long nights and in places sunlight cannot reach. Its final design and power rating have not been established publicly in the cited material.

What NASA has announced—and what it has not

In January 2026, NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy announced renewed cooperation on a fission surface-power system, with NASA stating a goal of developing a reactor for the lunar surface by 2030. NASA’s mission overview calls the planned system Lunar Reactor-1 (LR-1), lists a 2030 lunar landing, and says it would build on Space Reactor-1 (SR-1) Freedom. These are planned milestones, not evidence that a reactor has been selected, launched, or deployed. NASA’s announcement and mission overview describe the current framing.

The public numbers come from different phases of the effort and should not be combined into a single finalized vehicle specification:

Program framing Published details What the details mean
Earlier concept, described in 2024 40 kW electrical; under six metric tons; ten-year operation without human intervention NASA presented these as requirements and goals for that earlier concept, not confirmed LR-1 specifications. NASA Glenn, Jan. 31, 2024
Accelerated industry effort, described in 2025 At least 100 kW electrical; closed Brayton-cycle conversion; target of the first quarter of fiscal year 2030 NASA sought industry feedback on this effort; the article does not report a completed flight-design selection. NASA Glenn, 2025
NASA program page 40-kilowatt-class system for the early 2030s This page retains the earlier program framing, rather than resolving the later targets into one final specification. NASA Fission Surface Power
LR-1 mission framing, described in 2026 2030 lunar milestone The cited overview does not give a final verified power rating or establish that the milestone has occurred. NASA mission overview

NASA’s stated milestones do not establish a selected final flight design, procurement award, launch vehicle, landing site, complete cost, licensed safety case, or actual deployment date.

Why the Moon could need fission power

The Moon’s night lasts about 14.5 Earth days, according to NASA, and permanently shadowed regions receive no sunlight. Solar panels can be valuable where and when sunlight is available, but their output depends on local illumination and requires a way to meet demand through dark periods. A fission system is intended to produce electricity regardless of sunlight or temperature, giving missions another option for locations or operations where solar power alone may not suffice. NASA’s 2024 project account identifies habitats, rovers, backup grids, and science experiments among possible users.

NASA and DOE say the proposed system is intended to run for years without refueling. The exact operating life for LR-1 is not specified in NASA’s 2026 announcement; the ten-year figure belongs to the earlier 2024 concept.

How a lunar fission system would provide electricity

At a high level, fission releases heat in a reactor, and a power-conversion system turns that heat into electricity. NASA’s 2025 industry outreach specified a closed Brayton-cycle conversion system for the accelerated effort. That is a program target from that phase, not confirmation of the conversion hardware selected for LR-1.

A surface power plant also needs more than a reactor core: it must reject waste heat and distribute usable electricity to equipment. NASA’s account of the 2022 concept phase says proposals addressed the reactor as well as power conversion, heat rejection, and power management and distribution. The cited material does not provide a final system layout or detailed shielding and deployment design.

How the 2030 goal developed

  • 2016 and 2020: NASA says a 2016 NASA–DOE memorandum of understanding formed the basis for interagency work, expanded by an October 2020 agreement. The archived Space Policy Directive–6 called for a lunar surface fission system scalable to 40 kWe and higher, while making its roadmap subject to budgets, regulation, and appropriations. NASA program history; Space Policy Directive–6
  • 2022: NASA and DOE selected three design-concept proposals for initial work. NASA later described three $5 million contracts for this concept phase; those awards were for design work, not reactor delivery. NASA program history
  • 2024: NASA described an earlier 40 kW concept, its under-six-metric-ton target, and ten-year operating goal, with delivery to the launch pad after Phase 2 expected in the early 2030s. Its account described a one-year demonstration followed by nine operational years. These were earlier project requirements and schedule expectations, not a guarantee of present-day delivery. NASA Glenn
  • 2025: NASA described an accelerated effort targeting at least 100 kW electrical and the first quarter of fiscal year 2030, and sought industry feedback. NASA Glenn
  • 2026: NASA and DOE renewed their cooperation, and NASA presented LR-1 with a 2030 lunar milestone. NASA announcement; NASA mission overview

Fission versus solar-plus-storage

The choice is not simply “nuclear or solar.” Solar generation paired with storage may suit missions in illuminated locations, while fission is attractive when continuous availability or access to dark areas matters. A fair comparison would also need to account for system mass, electrical output, storage, heat rejection, shielding, deployment, and schedule. The cited NASA material does not provide an apples-to-apples cost or performance comparison against a specific solar-and-storage design, so it cannot establish which option is universally better.

Is this part of a wider lunar space race?

NASA’s 2026 release frames renewed U.S. work in terms of space leadership. China and Russia have separately agreed to cooperate on the International Lunar Research Station, a long-term lunar research facility, according to China’s National Space Administration. That agreement is evidence of cooperation on lunar infrastructure; it does not, by itself, confirm a rival reactor or its deployment schedule. CNSA’s ILRS announcement
