Usually, no—unless portable play or the Switch 2-exclusive outfits are important to you. Nintendo has announced Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Encore Edition for Switch 2 on November 5, 2026, but it has not published resolution or frame-rate targets. Existing PS5 owners already have documented quality and performance modes, so the Switch 2 release cannot yet be called a graphics upgrade. Xbox and PC owners should wait for independent testing if image quality or performance is the deciding factor.
The strongest reason to buy again is access to the complete single-player adventure in handheld mode, plus a set of 1980s glam-rock outfits for the Guardians.
What the Switch 2 Encore Edition includes
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Encore Edition is the Switch 2 edition of Eidos-Montréal’s third-person, story-driven action adventure. Nintendo lists it for release on November 5, 2026 and describes it as optimized for Switch 2 with refined controls and handheld play.

What is not advertised as new
The listing does not announce a new campaign, additional missions, multiplayer, or a separate story expansion. The confirmed purchase consists of the existing Guardians adventure, Switch 2 optimization and the exclusive outfit set. Treat the outfits as cosmetic bonus content rather than a new chapter of the game.
Is Switch 2 actually better than PS5?
There is not enough published evidence to make that claim. Nintendo’s listing says the game is optimized for Switch 2, but it does not state a rendering resolution, a frame-rate target, a performance mode, or whether dynamic resolution will be used. No independent Switch 2 benchmark is available in the information currently published.
That matters because “optimized” describes development work, not a measurable comparison with another console. It does not establish 4K output, a locked 60 frames per second, higher texture quality, shorter loading times, or visual parity with the current-generation console versions.

The PS5 version has two documented choices:

Those figures give PS5 owners a known baseline. Switch 2 may offer a different balance, but until Nintendo or independent testers publish numbers, there is no factual basis for saying it renders at a higher resolution or maintains a steadier frame rate.
What Xbox and PC owners can conclude
The original game launched on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC on October 26, 2021, alongside PS5 and PS4. The available Switch 2 information does not provide an equivalent Xbox or PC performance table, and PC results vary with hardware and settings. If you already own the game on Xbox or PC, compare the value of handheld access and the exclusive outfits—not an assumed technical advantage.

Portability is the decisive difference
Switch 2 is the only platform in this comparison that officially combines TV, tabletop and handheld modes in one system. A PS5, Xbox console or conventional desktop PC setup does not provide that same built-in handheld option. You can therefore play the campaign away from a television without streaming it from another device.
That benefit is practical rather than cosmetic. A long, chapter-based adventure can fit commutes, travel or short sessions where a home console is unavailable. If you regularly stop playing because the television is occupied, the Switch 2 edition may give the game a second life even when its graphics are not demonstrably better.

Portability is less compelling if you already play comfortably on a handheld-capable PC or use remote-play hardware. In that case, Switch 2’s advantage is the native handheld version and its simpler single-device setup, not a confirmed increase in image quality.
Exclusive outfits: worthwhile bonus or minor extra?
The Encore Edition adds 1980s glam-rock outfits for Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket and Groot. Nintendo confirms that these outfits are exclusive to Switch 2. They change the characters’ appearance, but the published description does not say that they add abilities, missions, dialogue or combat mechanics.
For a first-time player, having the outfits included is a pleasant extra. For an existing owner, their value depends on how much you care about cosmetic customization and replaying the campaign in an alternate look. They are not a strong reason to repurchase the game by themselves unless collecting or styling the Guardians is part of what you enjoy.

PS5 owner: the clearest skip case
PS5 owners already have an explicit quality-versus-performance choice. Buying the Switch 2 edition means giving up a known 4K/30 or 1080p-targeted-60 presentation for an unmeasured one. Unless you value handheld play, the new outfits or a single portable library more than those known PS5 modes, there is no confirmed reason to purchase again.
Xbox owner: portability must do the work
Xbox owners should make the decision around where they play. If your Xbox copy is tied to a television and you want the same campaign in handheld mode, the Encore Edition supplies a genuine platform change. If you are satisfied with your current setup, the confirmed additions are cosmetic and portable rather than a new game.
PC owner: consider your hardware and habits
PC owners may already have control over resolution, frame rate and graphics settings, depending on their hardware. Switch 2 offers convenience and a consistent portable profile, but no published specification shows that it will exceed a suitably equipped PC. Buy for the form factor and console simplicity, not an assumed PC-beating image.
Storage, modes and practical requirements
Plan for a 45 GB installation
Nintendo estimates a 45 GB game file. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed final download size, and patches can change the space required after launch. Check available internal storage before downloading and leave additional room for updates and save data. If you need extra capacity, budget for a Switch 2 storage card suitable for a 45 GB installation rather than assuming the base storage will be sufficient.
One player, three display modes
The listing specifies single-system play for one player. It also lists TV, tabletop and handheld modes, so the same solo campaign can be used on a television, with the console propped up, or in your hands. Nothing in the published details indicates local or online cooperative play.

Cloud saves require Nintendo Switch Online
Nintendo lists save-data cloud support through Nintendo Switch Online. This is useful for protecting or restoring Switch 2 save data, but it should not be interpreted as a promise that a PS5, Xbox or PC save can be imported. Cross-platform progression is not announced.
A decision checklist before you buy
- Ask whether you will use handheld mode. If the answer is no, the main confirmed Switch 2 advantage disappears.

- Compare the cost of a second copy with your play frequency. A repurchase makes more sense when you expect to complete or replay the campaign in portable sessions, not when the cartridge or download will remain on a shelf.
What to look for in independent Switch 2 testing
Performance testing after release should answer the questions Nintendo’s listing leaves open:
- Output resolution in TV and handheld modes, including whether it is fixed or dynamic.
- Frame-rate targets and frame-time consistency during heavy combat.
- Whether a performance mode exists and how it compares with PS5’s 1080p-targeted-60 option.
- Texture, shadow and lighting settings relative to the PS5, Xbox and PC releases.
- Loading behavior, asset-streaming stutter and the visual-transition glitches reported on PS5.
- Battery impact and any differences between handheld and docked presentations.
Until those measurements exist, “optimized for Switch 2” should be read as a compatibility and tuning statement, not as proof of superiority.
For new buyers who do not own the game
The Encore Edition is the current portable way to play this single-player Guardians adventure. It includes the main story, supports TV, tabletop and handheld play, and adds the Switch 2-exclusive glam-rock outfits. A new buyer does not face the double-purchase question, so the decision is simpler: choose it if you want this particular Marvel campaign and value playing it on Switch 2.
