NETA Auto’s HOZI XPC-S32G domain controller uses Wind River Linux with an NXP S32G processor and a service-oriented software framework to coordinate gateway, energy, diagnostics, over-the-air (OTA) and edge functions. It is a concrete example of Linux being used for a vehicle-wide control platform rather than only for infotainment.
What the NETA Auto collaboration actually demonstrates
Wind River announced on July 17, 2024, that NETA Auto was developing the HOZI XPC-S32G intelligent control domain controller with Wind River Linux. The controller is designed for NETA Auto’s Shanhai electrical/electronic architecture and is described as a vehicle-network center and integrated gateway.
Its role is to connect vehicle domains securely, support low-latency control, and provide a platform that can be upgraded as software changes. That architecture is characteristic of the software-defined vehicle: fewer isolated electronic control units, more centralized computing, and features delivered or refined through software over the vehicle’s service life.
Wind River’s General Manager for China, Woody Zou, said: “Wind River Linux can help innovators such as NETA Auto develop high-performance open source frameworks designed to enable the rapid development and deployment of software applications that will accelerate the software-defined vehicle.”

That is meaningful evidence of Linux entering a core vehicle computer. It is not a market-share measurement, a safety certification claim for every use case, or proof that all automakers will choose Linux.
What is the HOZI XPC-S32G domain controller?
The HOZI XPC-S32G is an integrated gateway and domain controller. Instead of handling one narrow function, it coordinates traffic and computing across several vehicle systems. Wind River says it supports secure cross-domain data interconnectivity, automotive network security, and low-latency vehicle-control management.
Nine functions identified by Wind River
- Central gateway
- Vehicle thermal management
- Battery energy management
- Power and torque management
- Remote diagnostics and calibration
- Full data collection
- Service-oriented architecture (SOA) gateway
- Edge computing
- OTA master
Combining these functions gives NETA Auto one software platform for communications, energy-related coordination, diagnostics, data handling and updates. It also creates a common control point that can support new applications without redesigning every individual controller.

The combination matters because a domain controller needs more than a general-purpose operating system. It must connect automotive networks, isolate or protect functions, meet timing requirements, and remain maintainable while the vehicle receives software updates.
Why an automaker would use Linux in a vehicle controller
Open development and application flexibility
Linux gives an OEM and its suppliers a widely used open-source base for building applications and services. Wind River positions its automotive Linux offering as a way to develop and deploy software quickly on high-performance platforms. That can help teams reuse familiar tools and software components instead of creating every layer from scratch.
Processor and architecture support
The NETA implementation runs on NXP’s S32G family, combining Cortex-M7 and Cortex-A53 processing resources. Linux’s broad processor support makes it practical to pair the operating environment with modern automotive system-on-chips while assigning different workloads to suitable cores or companion software.

A foundation for software-defined features
An OTA master, diagnostics, data collection and an SOA gateway are explicit HOZI XPC-S32G functions. Together they support a vehicle in which software can be updated, services can exchange data through defined interfaces, and new behavior can be added after production. Wind River’s Chief Product Officer, Avijit Sinha, summarized the broader direction this way: “Software will continue to drive the automotive industry forward and create new possibilities for both carmakers and consumers.”
Lifecycle support beyond community code
Production vehicles require maintenance, security response, integration assistance and long support periods. Wind River’s commercial Linux offering is intended to add that lifecycle and engineering support around the open-source base. The collaboration therefore represents a managed automotive platform, not simply an unmodified community distribution installed in a car.

No. The available announcements show Wind River Linux deployments and selections, not a universal replacement of QNX or other automotive operating systems. An automaker can use Linux for a high-performance domain controller, use a real-time operating system for a safety-critical function, and connect both in a mixed architecture.

The relevant question is not “Linux or QNX?” in the abstract. Engineers must evaluate the complete platform against the vehicle’s safety case, threat model, timing requirements, update process and supplier support.

Linux can be a strong fit for centralized, connected computing, but the operating-system choice remains a system-engineering decision. Certification evidence, deterministic behavior and lifecycle arrangements must be established for each program rather than inferred from the word “Linux.”

Hozon’s 2023 platform plan
On October 10, 2023, Hozon said it had selected Wind River Linux for an intelligent security vehicle platform, with production planned to start in 2025. The announcement covered high-performance computing, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication and advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS). A plan or target date is not confirmation that every stated capability or vehicle had reached production.

NETA Auto’s 2024 controller announcement
On July 17, 2024, Wind River said the HOZI XPC-S32G development would begin with the NETA S and later extend to new vehicles. The release describes the controller and its nine functions, but it does not establish which models or markets had shipped with it by September 2026.
ZEEKR’s separate selection
On August 23, 2023, ZEEKR selected Wind River Linux for development of future electronic/electrical architectures. This is a second OEM example showing that Wind River Linux is being considered beyond NETA Auto; it still does not establish Linux’s overall share of vehicle computers.
What remains unknown
- No qualifying independent statistic establishes Linux’s share of vehicle computers or proves that Linux will dominate future vehicles.
- The official NETA announcement does not confirm the production status, exact model coverage or market availability of the HOZI XPC-S32G by September 2026.
- The announcements identify the platform’s intended functions, but they do not publish a complete safety-certification scope, performance benchmark or comparison with a specific QNX implementation.
These limits matter: an OEM selection, development program or planned production date is evidence of direction, not proof of industry-wide adoption.
So, is Linux the future of vehicle computers?
Linux is likely to be one of the important foundations of future vehicle computing, especially in centralized gateways and domain controllers that need networking, data processing, service-oriented software and frequent updates. The HOZI XPC-S32G shows Linux operating alongside automotive-grade hardware and middleware at the center of those tasks.

The stronger conclusion is narrower than “every car will run Linux.” Future vehicles are more likely to use heterogeneous platforms: Linux where its ecosystem and application flexibility fit, real-time or safety-focused operating systems where determinism and certification require them, and carefully engineered interfaces between the two. NETA Auto’s collaboration is therefore a strong signal of Linux’s expanding role—not a declaration that one operating system has won the entire vehicle.
