Depending on its scope, an extension may be able to read, request, or modify website data. Allow access only when you trust the extension’s publisher and its feature genuinely needs it; prefer access limited to Medium or to your own action rather than access to every site.
No extension is named here, so its publisher, requested permissions, and actual behavior cannot be assessed. A Chrome warning describes what an extension could do; it does not, by itself, prove the extension is malicious.
What does Chrome site access let an extension do?
Chrome’s permissions guide explains that website access can let an extension read, request, or modify data on pages within its permitted scope. If that scope includes Medium and you are signed in, treat the access as sensitive: the extension may interact with Medium pages available to you.
The permission is a capability, not proof of misuse. Google’s Chrome Web Store Help puts it this way: “The warning doesn’t mean the app is dangerous, just that it can be.” The warning matters because it tells you what the extension may be able to do, not whether its developer will use that capability responsibly.

Medium-only access is narrower, not harmless
Access restricted to Medium is not the same as access to every website, but it still gives the extension access to Medium pages within its permission scope. The narrower scope reduces exposure compared with all-sites access; it does not establish that the extension is trustworthy.
How to decide whether to grant access
- Identify the extension and publisher. Review the Chrome Web Store listing and privacy disclosures. Ask whether the extension’s main feature plausibly requires access to Medium pages. A tool that works with Medium content may have a reason to request it; a feature unrelated to Medium has less obvious need.
- Check the requested site scope. Chrome lets you manage an extension’s site access, with choices that may include access when selected, automatic access on the current site, or automatic access on all sites. Options depend on the extension’s requested host permissions. Choose the narrowest option that supports the feature, such as Medium-only or user-triggered access when offered. See Google’s instructions for changing site access.
- Compare scope with purpose. If a Medium-specific feature requests access to all websites, ask why it needs that breadth. Chrome describes broad website access as potentially powerful, but the breadth of the warning alone does not show malicious intent.
- Decline or remove it if the case is weak. Do not grant access when the purpose is unclear, the publisher is not credible, privacy or data-retention practices are opaque, or the requested scope is broader than the feature appears to need.
- Check that its use fits Medium’s rules. Medium restricts using software such as browser plugins or add-ons to access its services for purposes including scraping or copying content, and restricts automated or programmatic interactions. Do not use an extension to automate account actions or copy content in ways that violate those rules; see Medium’s Rules.
How to revoke an extension’s access
You can change an extension’s site access or remove it in Chrome. In Chrome, open the extension’s details and adjust its site access, or disable or remove the extension. The exact controls and labels can vary with the extension’s permissions; Google’s site-access help page describes the available choices.

If you are concerned that someone accessed your Medium account, treat account recovery separately from Chrome permissions. Revoking or removing an extension changes its browser access; it does not sign out Medium sessions. Medium recommends signing out other sessions and reviewing connected sign-in methods when you are concerned about compromise. Follow Medium’s account-security guidance to review sessions and connected sign-in accounts.
Secure the sign-in method for your Medium account
Medium says it does not currently support passwords. Users sign in through email or connected social accounts, so changing a “Medium password” is not the right advice. Secure the email account or social sign-in provider you use for Medium, review its sessions and security, and use Medium’s own session controls. During a security audit, Medium also recommends reviewing connected accounts, disconnecting social accounts if appropriate, and disabling email forwarding when relevant.

Could an extension cause Medium sign-in problems?
Yes. Medium’s sign-in troubleshooting guidance says paywall-blocking extensions can prevent sign-in and ad blockers may need exceptions for Medium domains. That establishes possible interference with access; it does not establish that those extensions steal account data.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to compare when choosing between extensions
- Publisher: Is the developer identifiable and credible?
- Purpose: Does the advertised feature actually need access to Medium pages?
- Scope: Is access limited to Medium or specific sites, or does it cover all websites?
- Timing: Can access be limited to when you activate the extension?
- Privacy: Are data use, sharing, and retention explained clearly?
- Conduct: Is the extension’s use consistent with Medium’s rules?
These checks help assess the request, but they cannot establish whether an unnamed extension is safe. That requires evaluating the specific extension, its publisher, disclosures, and behavior.
