Short answer: IONOS is a credible, low-cost Linux host when you choose the right tier. Shared Linux hosting suits ordinary websites that value plan variety and support; an IONOS VPS is the more flexible option for developers who need root-level control, predictable resources or a specific Linux distribution. Do not treat every IONOS uptime statement as the same promise: the official Linux Hosting page advertises 99.9% uptime, while independent VPS coverage reports a 99.99% guarantee for VPS plans.
The trade-off is usability and value after the introductory period. IONOS uses a custom control panel rather than the familiar cPanel/WHM/Softaculous combination, and reviewers have found some shared plans weaker on migration, email allowances and performance. Read the renewal terms, backup scope, support level and resource limits before ordering.
What IONOS Linux hosting includes
IONOS sells several products that can all be described as Linux hosting, but they are not interchangeable. The two decisions that matter most are shared Linux hosting versus VPS hosting and managed convenience versus administrator control.
Shared Linux hosting
Shared plans place your website on infrastructure used by other customers. They are generally the simplest route for a brochure site, blog, small shop or development project that does not need a dedicated virtual machine. IONOS’s official Linux Hosting page advertises georedundant hosting, PHP support, Linux server options including Debian, and a 99.9% uptime claim. That is a current product-page statement, not a guarantee that applies automatically to every IONOS service.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Shared hosting normally reduces server-maintenance work, but you accept limits on CPU, memory, processes, mailboxes, backups and configuration. The exact allowance depends on the country storefront and plan. IONOS’s public material does not establish one universal resource table for every region, so compare the plan shown at checkout rather than assuming that a feature on one national site is included everywhere.
VPS hosting
A VPS gives you an isolated virtual server with resources and operating-system choices that are broader than shared hosting. TechRadar’s January 9, 2026 review counted six IONOS VPS plans. It reported unlimited traffic, free SSL, 24/7 support, firewall management and DDoS protection on the VPS product it examined. The same review identified four possible server locations: the USA, UK, Germany and Spain.

HostAdvice’s broader 2026 review describes a 99.99% uptime SLA on VPS and server plans, based on the reviewer’s experience with a Linux XL VPS and IONOS support channels. These are VPS/server findings; they should not be merged with the 99.9% claim on the general Linux Hosting page.
IONOS shared Linux and VPS compared
Use this table as a decision aid, then verify the live plan terms for your billing country. “Not stated” means the cited material does not establish a comparable value, not that the feature is absent.

Is IONOS Linux hosting any good?
For the right workload, yes. IONOS combines a wide product range with Linux flexibility, phone support and security features that are useful to both newcomers and experienced administrators. The value proposition is strongest when you need a low-cost entry point, a European data-center option or a VPS with traffic included.
It is less compelling when you expect cPanel conventions, free site migration, generous mailboxes on every shared plan or consistently strong shared-hosting performance. The service is not one uniform experience: a low-cost shared account and a VPS are different products with different uptime language, administration and failure modes.

Choose shared Linux hosting when
- Your site is mostly informational, uses a conventional PHP stack and does not need custom system packages.
- You want the host to handle more of the server layer.
- Your traffic and background jobs fit the plan’s published CPU, memory, process and storage limits.
- You have checked the number of included mailboxes and the backup retention rather than assuming they are unlimited.
Choose an IONOS VPS when
- You need root or administrator control, a dedicated virtual environment or custom services.
- You want to select a Linux image and tune the web server, database, firewall and scheduled jobs yourself.
- Your application benefits from unlimited traffic as reported for the reviewed VPS plans.
- You can patch, monitor and secure a server, or have someone who can do it reliably.
Look elsewhere when
- A familiar cPanel/WHM/Softaculous workflow is a hard requirement.
- You require guaranteed free migration, a large mailbox allowance or high shared-hosting performance without comparing plan details.
- You cannot accept responsibility for VPS updates, credentials, firewall rules and backups.
How reliable is IONOS hosting?
Reliability depends on the product and on what “uptime” means in the applicable terms. IONOS’s official Linux Hosting page says, “Keep your project online with 99.9% uptime and our georedundant hosting services.” Independent coverage of IONOS VPS products reports a 99.99% uptime guarantee or SLA. Those percentages differ by a factor of ten in the permitted downtime over a year, so use the statement attached to your exact plan.
Neither percentage tells you how quickly an individual support case is resolved, whether scheduled maintenance is excluded, or what compensation is available. Before buying, open the service-level terms for your country and check the measurement method, exclusions, credit process and whether the promise applies to network availability, power, a virtual machine or the whole application.
What georedundant hosting does and does not mean
Georedundancy indicates that IONOS designs parts of its hosting infrastructure with geographic resilience. It does not automatically create a multi-region deployment for your website, duplicate your database, or replace an application-level backup. A single VPS, database or DNS configuration can still be a single point of failure. If downtime is costly, maintain independent backups and document how you would restore DNS, files and data.
Does IONOS support Ubuntu or Debian?
Debian is explicitly named among the Linux server options on IONOS’s official Linux Hosting page. TechRadar describes the VPS offering as having broad Linux choice, but the exact distribution images available can vary by VPS generation, location and account interface. Do not infer that every Ubuntu release or every Debian version is installable on every plan.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How to verify a distribution before ordering
- Open the VPS plan configurator for your billing country.
- Look for the operating-system or image selector and record the exact distribution name and version.
- Confirm whether the image is a clean installation, a preconfigured stack or a license-bearing option.
- Check whether changing the image later requires rebuilding the server and destroying existing data.
- Verify kernel, virtualization, IPv4/IPv6 and root-access details in the technical terms.
If a required image is missing, ask support for written confirmation before paying. A generic “Linux supported” statement is not proof that a particular Ubuntu LTS release, Debian version or package repository is available.
Is the IONOS control panel easy to use?
IONOS uses a custom control panel rather than the cPanel/WHM/Softaculous stack many shared-hosting customers already know. TechRadar found everyday tasks less intuitive and said experienced users may need time to learn the system. That is a usability trade-off, not evidence that the panel cannot perform the task.

What the custom panel changes
- Menu names and navigation differ from cPanel, so tutorials written for cPanel may not map directly.
- Domain, DNS, mail, hosting and billing functions may be presented in a unified account area rather than separate branded tools.
- A VPS still requires command-line administration for many server tasks; a control panel does not remove patching, log review or application configuration.
A sensible first-day workflow
- Sign in and enable the strongest available account security, including multi-factor authentication if offered.
- Locate the sections for domains, DNS, hosting, mail, SSL, backups and invoices; note where each setting lives.
- Connect a test domain or subdomain before moving production DNS.
- Deploy a small test page, verify HTTPS, PHP version and database connectivity, and record the rollback steps.
- Only then migrate live files, mail and DNS. Keep the old host available until propagation and application checks are complete.
For a VPS, treat the panel as provisioning and account management. Use a documented administration method—SSH keys, least-privilege users, firewall rules, update schedules and monitoring—for the operating system and application.
What do IONOS users say about support?
Support evidence is useful but should be read as separate samples, not blended into one score. HostAdvice’s IONOS Linux review, updated August 18, 2026, combines expert ratings with 385 user reviews and describes phone support, a Help Center and a Digital Guide. TechRadar reports 24/7 support for the VPS product it reviewed. HostAdvice also describes its reviewer’s experience with a Linux XL VPS and support channels; those observations are reviewer findings, not an independent laboratory benchmark.
G2 lists IONOS VPS at 4.3/5 from 20 reviews on a page updated September 22, 2026. That is a platform-specific sample, not a universal satisfaction score for all IONOS hosting. Trustpilot’s claimed IONOS profile explains its review sourcing, scoring and moderation process, but its rating and review count change over time. If you quote Trustpilot at publication, capture the live figure and date.
How to judge support before you need it
- Ask a pre-sales question that requires a precise answer, such as the available Debian or Ubuntu image and the backup retention.
- Check whether support is phone, ticket, chat or documentation for the product you are buying, rather than relying on a site-wide badge.
- For a VPS, determine whether support manages the operating system or only the underlying infrastructure.
- Save the provider’s escalation and service-status links in your runbook.
Pricing: why the renewal bill matters
IONOS is often competitive on introductory pricing, but a low first-term price is not a complete value comparison. TechRadar specifically flags shared-hosting limitations that can change the effective cost: no free migration on some offers, one email account on some plans and below-par performance. The exact introductory price, renewal price, contract term, taxes and included resources vary by geography and promotion.
Build a like-for-like cost comparison
| Cost item | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Introductory rate | How long does the promotional price last, and is it a monthly equivalent or a prepaid term? |
| Renewal rate | What recurring price applies after the initial term, and when will it first be charged? |
| Contract term | Is the displayed price tied to 1, 12, 24 or another commitment period? |
| Resources | What storage, CPU, memory, processes, databases, domains and mailboxes are included? |
| Migration | Is migration included, self-service, paid or unavailable on the selected plan? |
| Backups | How often are backups made, how long are they retained and is restoration included? |
| Security and SSL | Which certificates, firewall controls and DDoS protections are included for this tier? |
| Support | Which channels and hours apply after the introductory period? |
| Cancellation and refund | What notice, minimum term and refund rules apply in your country? |
Because the supplied coverage does not establish a single global price, quoting one number would be misleading. Use the IONOS checkout for your country, record the promotional and renewal totals, and compare the full term—not only the headline monthly figure.
Migration, backups and performance pitfalls
No free migration on some shared plans
TechRadar reports that some IONOS shared-hosting offers do not include free migration. If you are moving WordPress, PHP files, databases, mailboxes or DNS, price the labor and test the process before cancelling the old host. A migration is complete only when the site, forms, cron jobs, SSL, mail delivery and redirects have all been verified.

Email allowances can be smaller than expected
Some shared plans include only one email account, according to TechRadar’s coverage. Count the addresses, aliases, forwarding rules and storage your organization actually needs. If you need mail for several people, a plan that looks inexpensive for web files may become poor value after adding mail services.
Shared performance is not guaranteed by the VPS SLA
TechRadar describes shared-hosting performance as below par in its comparison, while its 99.99% figure applies to the VPS product reviewed. Do not use the VPS SLA as a performance promise for shared hosting. Test representative pages, monitor response time and identify whether slowdowns come from application code, database queries, resource throttling or network conditions.
Backups are not a substitute for a restore test
The available coverage does not establish one backup policy for all IONOS Linux plans. Confirm frequency, retention, off-server copies and restoration fees. Perform a restore to a temporary location before relying on the feature; an untested backup is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
Security and administration checklist for an IONOS VPS
IONOS VPS reviews report firewall management and DDoS protection, but those features do not secure an application automatically. Complete these tasks after provisioning:
- Replace password login with SSH keys where supported and disable direct root login after confirming an administrative recovery path.
- Apply operating-system and kernel updates, then establish a recurring patch schedule.
- Allow only required inbound ports and restrict administrative access by source network when practical.
- Create separate users for deployment and operations; avoid running the application as root.
- Configure HTTPS, automatic certificate renewal and secure cookie settings.
- Set database credentials outside publicly served files and rotate any credentials exposed during migration.
- Enable log retention, uptime checks, disk alerts and resource monitoring.
- Keep an independent backup and test restoration, including database consistency.
On shared hosting, the provider manages more of the platform, but you still control application updates, CMS plugins, passwords, permissions and content. Security responsibility is reduced, not eliminated.
Data location, sovereignty and enterprise claims
IONOS Group’s FY2025 financial material documents SLES Bring Your Own Subscription integration in IONOS Public Cloud, German data centers and free 24/7 infrastructure support for that cloud context. Those details describe IONOS Public Cloud and should not be generalized to every shared Linux plan or ordinary VPS. If data residency, sector regulation or contractual sovereignty matters, obtain the exact region, subprocessors, backup location and support-access terms for the product and account type you intend to buy.

A practical buying decision
Step 1: classify the workload
Write down whether you are hosting a static site, PHP application, CMS, online store, API, mail service or custom daemon. Note peak traffic, background jobs, database size, deployment method and compliance requirements. This determines whether shared hosting is realistic or a VPS is necessary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStep 2: select the service tier
Start with shared Linux when simplicity matters and the published limits fit. Move to a VPS when you need isolated resources, a specific image, custom services or administrator control. Do not select a VPS solely because a 99.99% figure sounds better; it also creates patching and security work.
Step 3: verify the regional offer
Open the storefront for your billing country and record the exact plan name, data-center choices, introductory term, renewal amount, taxes, cancellation rules and resource limits. Prices and included features can differ by geography.
Step 4: test support and administration
Ask a detailed pre-sales question and assess the answer. If your team depends on cPanel, request a demonstration or documentation of the equivalent workflow. For VPS, confirm who handles the operating system and what assistance is included.
Step 5: plan migration and recovery
Estimate migration labor, DNS propagation, mail cutover and rollback. Confirm backups and run a restore test. Keep the previous host active until the new site and mail have passed functional checks.
Final verdict
IONOS is a sensible Linux hosting shortlist candidate in 2026, especially for buyers who want many tiers, Debian or other Linux choices, European location options and a VPS package with traffic, SSL, support, firewall management and DDoS protection as reported by TechRadar. Its broad range is also its main complication: shared and VPS products have different uptime language, resources, administration and support expectations.
Choose shared hosting only after checking migration, email, backup and performance details. Choose a VPS when you can manage a server and need its control. Treat the custom control panel as a learning cost if your team is accustomed to cPanel. Finally, compare the renewal bill—not just the introductory offer—and read the SLA attached to the exact product. On those conditions, IONOS can deliver good value; without them, the cheapest headline plan may be a false economy.
