If you are happy with the iPhone’s built-in Camera app and rarely adjust settings, Halide’s extra tools may not justify the cost. Lux Optics published Mark III pricing in 2026 at $19.99 per year or $59.99 for a one-time purchase; existing Halide subscribers and Mark II buyers get Mark III as a free upgrade.
What does Halide do that the iPhone Camera app doesn’t?
Halide Mark III combines more deliberate camera controls with a distinct image-rendering and development workflow. Lux Optics describes it as its current flagship camera app, available in the App Store. Its co-founder Ben Sandofsky says the goal is “The most beautiful photos that can come from an iPhone”—a statement of the product’s aim, not a guarantee that every user will prefer its images. Lux Optics’ Mark III announcement and Halide’s product page outline the feature set.
- Capture control: manual exposure, shutter- or ISO-priority options, manual focus, lens selection, RAW capture, composition guides, and aspect ratios. Focus peaking and a focus loupe are also listed on Halide’s product page.
- Alternative rendering: Process Zero and curated “Looks” provide options beyond the default camera rendering. Lux says the Looks are designed with Hollywood colorist Cullen Kelly and that all current and future Mark III Looks are included with a purchase or subscription.
- RAW development: Photo Lab works with DNG/RAW files and offers crop, level, output resolution, exposure, histogram, custom white balance, and adjustable film effects including grain, halation, MTF, and vignetting.
These controls can make a difference if you want to choose how a shot is exposed or rendered rather than simply relying on automatic capture. They do not establish that Halide will produce better photos for every person or scene. Feature availability can also depend on iPhone hardware and operating-system version; the cited product materials do not provide a complete compatibility matrix.
How much does Halide cost, and is it a subscription?
Lux Optics published the following US-dollar prices for Mark III in its May 27, 2026 announcement. Prices and offers can vary by storefront or change, so check the listing shown in your local App Store before buying.

Who is Halide worth paying for?
It may be a good fit for hands-on photographers
If you want to set exposure or focus yourself, Halide puts those controls in a camera app rather than limiting you to automatic capture. Shutter- or ISO-priority options can also be useful when you want to give one exposure variable priority while shooting.

It may suit people who want a consistent image style
Looks, Process Zero, and adjustable film effects give you options for shaping how images are rendered. That is useful if you want a more deliberate style across your photos; whether you prefer the results is personal.
It can simplify a basic RAW workflow
Photo Lab provides core development controls inside Halide, which may be enough if you mainly need to adjust and export DNG/RAW images. Lux describes it as a streamlined development tool, not a full-fledged editor. Importing RAW files from an external camera is explicitly in beta, so do not treat that as a polished, core workflow.

It is harder to justify for casual use
If you rarely change camera settings, do not use RAW, and already like the iPhone Camera app’s output, Halide’s controls and editing options may go unused. In that case, paying for features you do not need is difficult to justify.
What should Mark II owners know?
Lux says Mark II will receive no new features, though it will try to keep that version from breaking. A menu in Mark III provides a path back to Mark II, so buyers attached to the older interface can retain it while considering the redesigned app and its newer features. Lux Optics’ Mark III announcement describes the upgrade and return path.

What does Halide say about privacy, and where can you learn it?
Halide’s product page states: “Halide’s camera has no tracking, does not collect or share any of your information or photos.” This is the company’s own privacy statement, not the result of an independent audit. Halide’s official support site offers a 10-day learning course, FAQs, video tutorials, and a manual as digital resources.
