Sometimes—but only when your actual order pattern supports it. A grocery-delivery membership can pay for itself if you place enough qualifying orders with one service and the membership eliminates delivery charges you would otherwise pay. Higher online item prices, service fees, tips, taxes, order minimums and unused benefits can erase those savings.
Start with this test: divide the annual membership fee by the delivery fee you would otherwise pay, then recalculate using real checkout totals. A $99 annual plan divided by a $9.99 delivery fee reaches break-even at about 10 orders, but that is only a starting point.
What a grocery delivery membership actually changes
A membership usually waives or reduces the delivery charge when an order meets the service’s minimum and other eligibility rules. It normally does not make the groceries themselves cheaper, remove every service charge, eliminate tips, or guarantee that every delivery window is free.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- the prices shown for the items;
- a delivery charge, if the order does not qualify for the member benefit;
- service, platform or small-order fees;
- sales tax and any applicable deposits;
- a tip for the shopper or driver;
- the annual or monthly membership cost allocated across your orders.
The membership decision therefore depends on your complete basket, not the words “free delivery.” Coverage, item selection, fulfillment partner, delivery speed and thresholds can change by ZIP code and order type, so check the final checkout screen for the address and store you actually use.
Current U.S. membership rules at a glance
The following published terms describe common U.S. options. Prices, promotions and eligibility can change, and the service’s checkout page for your ZIP code controls what you will be charged.
| Service | Published membership price | Rule for waived delivery | Other value and cautions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instacart+ | $99 per year or $9.99 per month | Grocery and retail orders of $10 or more; Costco orders of $35 or more; eligible restaurant orders of $25 or more | Delivery fee varies by retailer, delivery window and order total. Service fees and item pricing still apply. Instacart said in a 2026 pricing update that members can receive $0 delivery on orders as low as $10. |
| Walmart+ | Not stated on the cited 2026 membership page; promotions and pricing can vary | Scheduled grocery delivery generally requires a $35 order and a slot marked with a $0 delivery fee | Shipping and pharmacy delivery can add value. Walmart warns that savings examples may exclude taxes, tips, third-party fees, delivery minimums and other charges. |
| Kroger Boost | $69 promotional plan advertised by Kroger; it renews at the then-current monthly retail price after the promotion | $35 minimum order for free grocery delivery | Includes 2X fuel points and other fuel benefits. Third-party fulfillment and eligible departments vary. |
| Amazon grocery-delivery subscription | $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year for Prime members, according to Whole Foods’ membership page | Amazon describes a $25 qualifying threshold in most areas for the grocery subscription; other Amazon grocery services can use different thresholds | Prime membership is separate. Whole Foods orders can carry service fees outside qualifying program conditions. |
| Shipt | $99 per year after the advertised trial | Orders of $35 or more have no delivery fee; orders under $35 incur a $7 fee | Membership and one-time fees vary by market and retailer. |
“Free” in this table means the listed delivery charge is waived under the stated condition. It does not promise a zero-dollar checkout total.

The break-even calculation that answers “Is it worth it?”
Step 1: Calculate the simple delivery-fee break-even point
Use this equation:
annual membership fee ÷ delivery fee avoided per qualifying order = break-even orders
For a $99 annual plan and a $9.99 delivery fee, the result is 9.91, so you would need 10 qualifying deliveries to offset the fee mathematically. If you pay monthly, multiply the monthly fee by the number of months you expect to keep the membership and use the same calculation.
Step 2: Replace the advertised fee with your real fee
Delivery charges can vary by store, order size, speed and time slot. Look at two or three recent non-member checkouts, or use the service’s one-time delivery option without subscribing, and record the delivery charge that would actually be removed. A $5 fee requires nearly 20 orders to offset a $99 annual membership; a $12 fee requires fewer than nine.
Step 3: Add costs that remain after delivery is waived
For each order, compare the member checkout with the cost of buying the same basket in store or through a lower-cost option. Include service fees, small-order charges, tips, taxes, deposits and any price difference on the products. The more expensive basket is the amount that works against the membership’s delivery savings.

A useful net-value equation is:
net annual value = avoided delivery fees + benefits you would otherwise pay for − membership fee − extra item costs − member-only fees
Count a benefit only when you would genuinely use it. A pharmacy-delivery benefit has no financial value to a household that never orders prescriptions; fuel points have no value if the household does not buy fuel or cannot use the points before they expire.

Step 4: Check the order minimum before counting an order
An order below the threshold may still incur a delivery or small-order charge, so it does not count as a fully qualifying delivery. For example, Shipt charges $7 on orders under $35, while its $35-and-over orders have no delivery fee. Instacart+ advertises a lower $10 grocery and retail threshold, but Costco and restaurant thresholds are higher. Walmart+ scheduled grocery delivery generally requires both a $35 basket and an available slot labeled $0 delivery fee.
Your order-pattern worksheet
Fill this out using the service and store you would actually choose. Use a typical month rather than an unusually large holiday order.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Input | How to measure it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Deliveries per month | Count completed grocery deliveries, not abandoned carts or pickup orders | 4 |
| Expected deliveries per year | Multiply monthly deliveries by 12, then reduce the number if travel or seasonal changes will interrupt use | 48 |
| Average basket | Use the pre-tip subtotal for three representative orders | $85 |
| Delivery fee without membership | Record the charge shown for the same store, address and delivery window | $9.99 |
| Delivery fees avoided | Multiply qualifying deliveries by the actual fee | 48 × $9.99 = $479.52 |
| Membership cost | Use the annual price or the number of monthly payments you expect to make | $99 |
| Observed online price difference | Compare identical package sizes and brands at checkout and in the store or a store’s own site | $6 extra per order |
| Other recurring fees | Record service fees, small-order fees and any required paid add-ons that remain after membership | $3 per order |
| Estimated net value | Subtract the membership, item-price difference and remaining fees from avoided delivery fees | $479.52 − $99 − (48 × $6) − (48 × $3) = $92.52 |
The example produces a positive result only because the household orders often and keeps the online price gap modest. If the same household ordered twice a month, delivery savings would fall to $239.76 while the annual membership would remain $99.
Online item prices can outweigh delivery savings
Memberships change the delivery line, not necessarily the shelf price. Retailers may use different online catalogs, marketplace sellers, package sizes, promotions or fulfillment systems. Always compare unit prices, not just the displayed total: a 12-ounce package substituted for a 16-ounce package can make an apparently similar basket much more expensive.
The June 2024 Online Grocery Pricing Study reported these basket premiums versus Walmart:
| Retailer or service | Reported premium versus Walmart | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Kroger | 5.3% | Result for the study’s June 2024 comparison basket |
| Target | 6.9% | Result for the study’s June 2024 comparison basket |
| Amazon Fresh | 8.3% | Result for the study’s June 2024 comparison basket |
| Safeway/Albertsons | 21.6% | Result for the study’s June 2024 comparison basket |
| Sprouts | 31.6% | Result for the study’s June 2024 comparison basket |
| Whole Foods | 32.0% | Result for the study’s June 2024 comparison basket |
These are study results for one basket and date, not universal current markups. Your local promotions, loyalty account, private-label choices, substitutions and delivery zone can produce a smaller or larger difference.
A 5% premium on an $80 basket is $4; a 32% premium is $25.60. At four orders per month, a $25.60 gap adds more than $1,200 over a year, which would overwhelm a $99 membership. This is why the worksheet must use your own receipts.
A 2026 Federal Register discussion attributes a 30% to 50% range for higher online grocery costs to a cited report. That range is not a universal government estimate; treat it as a warning that online-versus-store pricing can be substantial in some settings, not as a prediction for your basket.
What each membership is best suited to
Instacart+
Instacart+ is most compelling when you regularly order from multiple participating grocery or retail stores and can keep grocery or retail baskets at $10 or more. The lower advertised threshold can help with small top-up orders, but retailer-specific delivery and service fees still require a checkout check. Costco orders use a $35 threshold, and eligible restaurant orders use $25, so do not apply the $10 rule to every cart.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Walmart+
Walmart+ can make sense for a household that combines scheduled grocery delivery with shipping or pharmacy delivery. For groceries, select a time slot that explicitly shows a $0 delivery fee and keep the order at or above $35. Walmart’s own terms caution that savings examples can leave out taxes, tips, third-party fees, minimums and other charges, so calculate from the final total rather than a promotional headline.
Kroger Boost
Kroger Boost has a lower advertised promotional price of $69 and adds 2X fuel points. It is a candidate for shoppers who already buy most groceries from participating Kroger locations and will redeem the fuel benefit. The plan renews at the then-current monthly retail price after the promotion, so record the renewal terms and reassess before the first paid renewal. A $35 minimum applies to free grocery delivery, and third-party fulfillment or department eligibility can vary.
Amazon grocery-delivery subscription
Amazon’s Whole Foods membership page lists $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year for Prime members, with a $25 qualifying threshold in most areas for the grocery subscription. Prime is a separate cost, so include it only if you would keep Prime for its other uses. Amazon offers several grocery-shopping methods, and thresholds or fees can differ among them; confirm which service your cart is using before comparing prices.
Shipt
Shipt’s advertised standard membership is $99 per year after trial. Orders of $35 or more have no delivery fee, while smaller orders incur a $7 fee. This structure favors planned weekly shops over frequent low-value top-ups. Membership and one-time charges vary by market and retailer, so check the store-specific checkout.
Fees that memberships do not remove
Service and platform fees
A service fee can remain even when the delivery line is zero. It may be calculated as a percentage of the basket, a fixed amount, or a combination that changes by retailer and delivery window. Record it separately in your worksheet instead of treating it as part of the membership price.
Tips
Tips are normally optional but are an important labor cost and can affect the delivered total. A membership does not make tipping disappear. Compare orders using the same tip assumption; otherwise a member and non-member checkout are not comparable.
Small-order and minimum charges
If you need only a few items, the order may fall below the free-delivery threshold or trigger a small-order fee. Combining a second planned purchase can be cheaper than paying that charge, but do not add items you would not otherwise buy merely to qualify.
Taxes, deposits and regulated fees
Sales tax, bottle deposits, bag charges and local regulated fees are generally calculated independently of membership status. They belong in the final-total comparison even when the service advertises a zero-dollar delivery fee.
Substitution and refund effects
A replacement item can have a different package size or price, and an unavailable item can reduce the basket below a threshold. Review substitution settings, approve price limits where offered and check the receipt after delivery. A refund lowers the total but may also remove eligibility for a minimum-based benefit.

How to test a membership before committing
- Choose three representative baskets. Include a routine weekly order, a small top-up and a larger stock-up order.
- Record the exact store and ZIP code. Delivery coverage, windows, fees and inventory are local.
- Build each basket without subscribing. Capture item prices, delivery, service, small-order fees, taxes and the suggested tip.
- Repeat the carts under the membership offer. Verify that the delivery window is actually marked free and that the basket meets the threshold.
- Compare identical quantities. Check unit prices, package sizes, loyalty discounts and substitutions.
- Annualize your expected use. Multiply the typical monthly pattern by the months you will remain in the service, not by an optimistic maximum.
- Include benefits you can prove you will use. Add shipping, pharmacy, fuel points or pickup credits only at their realistic value to your household.
- Set a renewal reminder. Promotional plans can renew at a different price, and a trial can convert to paid membership.
When a membership is usually worth considering
- You place at least the calculated break-even number of qualifying deliveries every year.
- Your normal basket is comfortably above the minimum, so you are not buying filler items.
- The service stocks the brands, dietary products and package sizes you actually need.
- Your observed online price difference is smaller than the delivery savings.
- You would use ancillary benefits such as shipping, pharmacy delivery or fuel points.
- Delivery saves enough time or physical effort to justify a small remaining premium after the financial calculation.
When paying per order or using pickup is safer
- You order irregularly, travel often or expect fewer deliveries than the break-even count.
- Your baskets are usually below the service’s qualifying minimum.
- The service’s online prices are materially higher than your local store prices.
- You already use free pickup or can combine errands without a meaningful time cost.
- Your preferred retailers or products are unavailable through the membership’s delivery network.
- The plan’s extra benefits duplicate services you already receive elsewhere.
Pickup can be a useful control option: it may avoid delivery charges while preserving online ordering convenience, although pickup fees, minimums and substitutions vary by retailer.
Ways to improve the value after joining
Batch predictable purchases
Plan a weekly or biweekly basket that clears the minimum without unnecessary add-ons. Batching reduces the chance that a small emergency order incurs a fee.
Compare unit prices and private labels
Use price-per-ounce, price-per-pound or price-per-count information. A store-brand substitute can preserve the membership’s convenience without accepting a large branded-item premium.
Use pickup or in-store shopping when it is cheaper
A membership does not require every order to be delivered. If pickup is free and you are already near the store, reserve delivery for the orders where it saves meaningful time or effort.
Monitor the renewal price
Promotional pricing can expire. Put the renewal date and expected post-promotion price on your calendar, then repeat the worksheet with your actual order count.
Check receipts and credits
Confirm that refunds, missing-item credits, coupons and fuel points were applied. A single recurring fee or missed benefit can materially change annual value.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Counting every order as a free delivery
Problem: You divide the annual fee by an advertised delivery charge but ignore orders below the minimum.
Correction: Count only orders whose checkout explicitly shows the waived delivery benefit.

Using a promotional price forever
Problem: A first-year offer is treated as the recurring cost.
Correction: Calculate both the promotional year and the renewal year, then decide whether to cancel before renewal.
Valuing benefits you will not redeem
Problem: Fuel points, shipping or pharmacy delivery are assigned their headline value despite little household use.
Correction: Value a benefit at the amount you would otherwise pay and realistically redeem.
Comparing different baskets
Problem: A member cart has fewer items, a different store or different package sizes.
Correction: Save a standard basket and compare the same products, quantities, substitutions and tip assumptions.

Bottom line
Join a grocery delivery membership when your documented qualifying orders exceed the break-even count and the online price premium plus remaining fees do not consume the delivery savings. For a $99 plan, ten $9.99 avoided delivery fees is the mathematical starting point—not proof of savings. Your ZIP code, order minimums, basket prices, tips, service fees and actual use determine the answer.
