Google has not confirmed in its live Gemini help table that free access to Flash or Pro has already been removed. A TechRadar report published October 4, 2026, says Google planned to make a change starting October 9: free users would be limited to Flash-Lite, and AI Plus subscribers would lose access to Pro. Google’s help page, however, currently lists Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro as available without an AI plan. Check the model picker and any in-app notice for your account before assuming the reported change is in effect.
What Gemini models are free now, and what is reportedly changing?
Google’s Gemini Apps Help page currently lists Gemini 3 Flash-Lite, Gemini 3 Flash, and Gemini 3 Pro as available to users “Without an AI Plan,” as well as to AI Plus, AI Pro, and AI Ultra subscribers. The same page says model names, versions, and availability may change. Google’s live Gemini Apps limits and upgrades page is therefore the best place to check the published status.
Separately, a TechRadar report published October 4, 2026 says Google planned these changes beginning October 9, 2026:
- Users without a paid AI plan would lose access to Flash and Pro, leaving Flash-Lite.
- AI Plus subscribers would lose access to Pro.
Those are reported plans, not proof that the change has rolled out to every account or region. Google’s currently published model table and the report conflict. Check the model picker in Gemini, read any notice shown in the app, and consult Google’s help page for your location and account.

How Gemini limits work
Model access is only part of the free-plan question. Google says Gemini Apps limits depend on compute use, including prompt complexity, the models or features used, and conversation length. Limits refresh every five hours until a weekly limit is reached. Google also warns that compute-heavy features may be unavailable to users without a plan during periods of high demand.
That means access should not be understood as a guaranteed fixed number of prompts. Google’s Help page puts it this way: “Gemini Apps limits may change. Access is subject to change or may be limited based on testing, experimentation, or availability.”

Seven alternatives to consider—and what is actually verified
ChatGPT, Claude, Microsoft Copilot, and Perplexity are online assistant services that may be worth comparing with Gemini. The available service pages establish that these products exist, but do not establish their current free-plan models, quotas, geographic availability, or privacy terms. This evidence does not verify seven alternatives or support calling any service the best free replacement. Check each provider’s official plan information before switching.
- ChatGPT — Compare the free plan’s available models, usage limits, and data controls with the Gemini tasks you care about.
- Claude — Check which features and models are included without payment, plus any usage limits and regional restrictions.
- Microsoft Copilot — Review its current free access and determine whether its available tools suit your workflow.
- Perplexity — If you want answers supported by sources, verify which research features are available on its free plan and how usage is limited.
- Three more services — No additional candidates are verified here. Confirm an assistant’s official free plan, model access, limits, and eligibility before treating it as a fifth, sixth, or seventh alternative.
Do not assume that “free” means the same thing across services: one provider may include a model but limit how often it can be used, while another may restrict particular features or availability by region. For a fair comparison, check five items on each provider’s current official plan page:
- Which models and features work without payment.
- Message or compute limits and when they reset.
- Whether the service fits your task, such as writing, coding, web research, or office work.
- Account, age, and regional requirements.
- Privacy settings and data-use controls.
Gemini Apps and the Gemini API are different products
The consumer Gemini app and the Gemini Developer API have separate access rules. Google’s Gemini Developer API pricing page describes the developer product; its pricing or free-tier status does not establish which models consumers can use in Gemini Apps.
