After a Chrome security update, restart the browser if prompted, confirm it is current, and review its Safety Check results.
What to do after a Chrome security update
-
In desktop Chrome, select More → Help → About Google Chrome. Chrome checks for updates on this page. See Google’s desktop update instructions.
-
If Relaunch appears, save any work and select it. The update may have downloaded without being active; restarting applies it. Google says regular tabs and windows normally reopen, but Incognito windows do not. If you postpone the relaunch, the update applies the next time Chrome restarts.
-
Return to About Google Chrome to check the status. If there is no Relaunch option, Google says Chrome is on the latest version.

Open More → Settings → Privacy and security → Safety Check and address any recommendations shown. Safety Check can review update status, Safe Browsing, compromised or reused passwords, unused site permissions, notifications, and potentially harmful extensions. It is a useful review, not a guarantee that every risk has been found. Details are in Google’s guide to Chrome safety and security.
-
Review your Safe Browsing level and decide whether its protection and data-sharing trade-off suits you. Keep your operating system and other apps updated as well; browser security is only one layer.
How Safe Browsing levels differ
Google recommends using a level of Safe Browsing protection, but neither setting prevents every threat. The main choice is between protection focused on known dangers and stronger, more real-time checks that involve sending more browsing-related information to Google.
| Setting | Protection Google describes | Data handling Google describes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard protection | On by default. Warns about sites, downloads, and extensions identified as dangerous, providing protection against known dangers. | Google describes checks using locally stored lists and, in some cases, obfuscated URL portions sent through privacy servers. It says full URLs and bits of page content are sent only when a site does something suspicious. |
| Enhanced protection | Chrome’s strongest protection level, with warnings about potentially dangerous sites, downloads, and extensions, including some not previously known to Google. | Sends more information to Google in real time. Depending on the described case, this can include URLs and small samples of page content, downloads, extension activity, or system information. |
These are Google’s descriptions of its products and data handling, not an independent audit. Read Google’s Safe Browsing protection-level comparison and description of Safe Browsing privacy before choosing. Enhanced protection may suit someone who prioritizes broader warnings; Standard protection offers a more limited data-sharing approach while still warning about known dangers.

Google says Chrome updates automatically when a new version is available, but a downloaded update may not take effect until the browser restarts. The update process depends on the device: Google documents GoogleUpdater on Windows and macOS, while Android and iOS updates are delivered through Google Play and the Apple App Store. Google says desktop update checks can send information such as release channel, basic hardware information, Chrome version, installation duration, and recent use. Mobile delivery is handled through the app stores, though Google also uses its servers for active-install counts and out-of-date notifications. See Google’s explanation of Chrome update data.
What to do if a Chrome update fails
Start with common causes before treating a failed update as evidence of a security incident. Google recommends these checks in its update troubleshooting guide:
-
Make sure the device is online and restart it if the update may not have completed.
-
Check whether antivirus, firewall, or parental-control settings are blocking Chrome’s update services.

-
If the problem continues, check the device for unwanted software.
-
For some Windows errors, Google lists a standalone installer as a possible option; on Mac, it describes reinstalling Google Software Update. Follow the instructions for the specific error rather than using an installer from an untrusted site.
-
If the browser or device is managed by an organization, contact its administrator. Managed updates and relaunch controls may be set by policy.
What else helps keep Chrome and your account safer?
Google’s account-security guidance recommends keeping the operating system and apps current, removing extensions you do not need, using strong, unique passwords, and considering two-step verification. If Safety Check flags a password, permission, notification, or extension issue, review that item rather than dismissing the warning automatically. See Google’s account security recommendations.
