Gemini 2.5 Pro remains a stable API model, but Google limits access to people who have actively used 2.5 models in the past, so its continued service does not guarantee that a new user can start using it.
What Gemini 2.5 Pro is
Gemini 2.5 Pro is Google’s model identified in the API as gemini-2.5-pro. Google describes it as intended for complex reasoning and coding tasks. Its stable release date was June 17, 2025; the model page lists June 2025 as its latest update. Those dates describe this model’s release and documentation, not its position as Google’s newest model.
Google’s current catalog lists newer model generations and recommends using newer models for new projects. The catalog also says that 2.5 models are not deprecated and will continue to be served through the API “until further notice.” Google’s deprecation table gives Gemini 2.5 Pro no announced shutdown date. That is continued service, not a claim that it is the latest or the best choice for every use.
What it can take in and return
Google’s model page lists audio, images, video, text, and PDF as supported input types. The listed output type is text. This can suit workflows that need to analyze different kinds of supplied material and produce a written response, but it does not mean the model can generate every media type it can interpret.

The same page lists a maximum input of 1,048,576 tokens and a maximum output of 65,536 tokens. These are documented product limits, not guarantees about response quality or usable context in every application. Check the live model page before building an integration around them.

What “thinking built-in” means
Google’s thinking guide marks thinking as on for Gemini 2.5 Pro and lists low, medium, and high thinking levels. Google describes thinking models as reasoning internally before responding. This describes a model capability; it is not a promise that the user will see the model’s full internal reasoning in its answer.

Should you choose Gemini 2.5 Pro for a project?
For an existing workflow, 2.5 Pro may remain relevant if your account can access it and its documented inputs, outputs, and tools meet your needs. For a new project, Google recommends considering newer models in its catalog. Compare the exact model options available to you rather than assuming 2.5 Pro is open to every new API user.
- Check access first: Google says access to 2.5 models is limited to users who have actively used them in the past.
- Match the task: Check whether the model’s supported modalities and listed tools cover your workflow.
- Check the current catalog: Newer models are listed, and Google recommends them for new projects; model recommendations and access rules may change.
