No. In the June 2026 TOP500 list, Frontier ranks third, not first. LineShine is No. 1 and El Capitan is No. 2 on the list’s HPL benchmark. Frontier’s score is about 1.62 times lower than LineShine’s—not 2.5 times faster than the runner-up.
What the June 2026 TOP500 list says
TOP500 ranks the systems by their performance on the High Performance Linpack (HPL) benchmark. The June 2026 results place LineShine first, El Capitan second and Frontier third.
| Rank | System | HPL performance |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | LineShine | 2.198 exaflop/s |
| 2 | El Capitan | Not stated in the cited June 2026 TOP500 figures |
| 3 | Frontier | 1.353 exaflop/s |
Exaflop/s describes a rate of floating-point calculations under the benchmark, not a universal speed rating for every kind of computing task. The figures and placements above are from the same June 2026 list edition.
How much faster is the leader than Frontier?
Dividing LineShine’s listed HPL result, 2.198 exaflop/s, by Frontier’s 1.353 exaflop/s gives approximately 1.62. This is a calculation from the TOP500 figures, not a separately published TOP500 statistic. It compares the first- and third-place systems; the cited figures do not establish that Frontier is faster than El Capitan.

What “fastest supercomputer” means here
“Fastest” in this ranking means highest performance on HPL. It should not be read as a claim that the same machine leads every benchmark or every real-world workload. TOP500 reports benchmark categories separately; its June 2026 highlights distinguish HPL from other benchmark outcomes. A ranking claim should therefore name both the list edition and the benchmark rather than treating “fastest” as an all-purpose title.
Where Frontier is installed
Frontier is installed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee and is operated for the U.S. Department of Energy. Its location and operator do not change its position in the June 2026 HPL ranking.

Why the old headline needs updating
The claim that Frontier is still No. 1 and 2.5 times faster than No. 2 does not match the June 2026 TOP500 results: Frontier is third, behind LineShine and El Capitan. The ranking is edition-sensitive, so any present-tense claim about the world’s fastest supercomputer should identify the list date and benchmark. Hewlett Packard Enterprise separately says that HPE-built systems held six of the top ten places in June 2026; that is HPE’s vendor statement, while TOP500 is the source for the ranking.
