Yes. Amazon phased out the standalone Freevee app in August 2025 and moved its free programming destination to Prime Video. Amazon said people without Prime would still be able to watch a broad selection of free, ad-supported content there, but that does not mean every former Freevee title remains available or free.
Is Freevee shutting down?
Amazon announced in November 2024 that it would phase out the Freevee brand and bring its content offering into Prime Video. The change ended the standalone Freevee app; it did not mean that all programming associated with Freevee disappeared. Amazon said Prime Video would retain a broad free selection for non-Prime viewers, including select Amazon MGM Studios originals, licensed movies and series, and free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) channels. Fast Company reported Amazon’s announcement.
An Amazon spokesperson told Fast Company, “To deliver a simpler viewing experience for customers, we have decided to phase out Freevee branding.”
When did the Freevee app shut down?
In an in-app notice reported by TechCrunch on July 2, 2025, Amazon said the Freevee app would remain accessible until August 2025 and directed viewers to Prime Video. The report did not give a specific final day, so the established cutoff is August 2025—not a particular date. TechCrunch reported the notice.

The notice called Prime Video “the new exclusive home for Freevee TV shows, movies and Live TV,” and told users they could continue watching free content there “for free, no subscription needed.” Those were statements in the notice at the time; they are not a guarantee that every individual title remains available or free now.
Where did Freevee go?
Look for eligible free content in the Prime Video app or on the Prime Video website. The destination changed from the standalone Freevee app to Prime Video. The transition itself does not require buying a new device or subscribing to Prime to watch titles that are offered free.

Can I still watch Freevee for free?
Amazon said non-Prime viewers would continue to have access to a broad free selection through Prime Video. That is different from saying the entire former Freevee catalog is still there: a specific film or series may have moved, become unavailable, or require a different access option.
How to check whether a title is free with ads
- Open Prime Video and search for the movie or series you want.
- Open its detail page and check for a label such as “watch with ads” or “with ads.” Prime Video’s help page on Prime Video Ad Free explains the labels used for ad-supported titles.
- If the detail page does not identify the title as ad-supported, do not assume it is free just because it was previously associated with Freevee. Check the available viewing options shown on that page.
Do I need Prime to watch Freevee shows?
No Prime membership is needed for a title that Prime Video makes available free with ads. Prime Video also includes titles with other access requirements, so check the title’s detail page rather than treating the Freevee name or its former availability as proof that it is free today.
