Short answer: Do not treat PS5 Pro’s PSSR as a universal frame-generation feature. Sony documents PSSR as AI image reconstruction and upscaling, while competitive players should prioritize the most stable performance or high-frame-rate (HFR) mode in each game. Use PSSR when it improves clarity without making that title feel less responsive, and evaluate any separate frame-generation-like setting on its own merits.

What PS5 Pro actually offers

“Frame generation” usually means creating additional displayed frames from rendered frames. That can make motion look smoother, but it may also change the timing between your input and the image you see. On PS5 Pro, Sony’s official descriptions do not present a console-wide frame-generation switch.

Sony describes PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) as AI-enhanced resolution. Its purpose is to reconstruct a sharper image from a lower internal rendering resolution, improving detail and stability on a 4K television. Sony’s PSSR announcement describes an AI library that analyzes pixels in a game image while it upscales. The updated version is also described as helping compatible games maintain high frame rates and image quality.

That is different from saying that PSSR generates extra game frames. The official material reviewed does not establish that PSSR inserts additional rendered or displayed frames, nor does it publish a universal PS5 Pro frame-generation setting. If a particular game includes a separate option that behaves like frame generation, it must be assessed as a game-specific implementation rather than assumed to be part of PSSR.

Why competitive players should start with performance

In a competitive game, consistent timing is generally more valuable than a sharper still image. Your first choice should therefore be the game’s Performance or HFR mode if that mode delivers the most stable frame rate. A mode that fluctuates can feel worse than a lower but steady frame rate because camera movement, aiming and animation timing become less predictable.

PS5 Pro’s extra graphics capability can let developers raise resolution, improve effects or sustain higher frame rates. The result depends on the title’s patch and rendering choices. Sony’s compatibility descriptions repeatedly refer to supported or compatible games, so there is no single setting that behaves identically across the PS5 Pro library.

A practical order of priorities

  1. Stability: Select the mode with the steadiest frame delivery during actual matches, not merely the highest number shown in a menu.
  2. Responsiveness: Check how aiming, camera turns, menu navigation and rapid corrections feel with your controller.
  3. Display capability: Confirm that your television or monitor can display the mode’s refresh rate, especially when a title targets more than 60 frames per second.
  4. Clarity: Enable PSSR or another reconstruction option if it improves fine detail and motion stability without a noticeable responsiveness cost.
  5. Optional smoothing features: Test any title-specific frame-generation-like option separately. Do not use the PSSR label as proof that the option creates frames.

PSSR: what it can improve, and what it cannot prove

When enabled in a compatible title, PSSR can make a lower internal resolution look cleaner on a high-resolution display. Sony says the updated technology improves image stability, fine-detail clarity and motion reconstruction in compatible games. Those benefits can help you read distant geometry or distinguish moving objects, particularly when a game’s performance mode uses a lower internal resolution than its quality mode.

Image reconstruction is still an image-quality process. A sharper reconstructed frame is not the same thing as an additional frame displayed between two original frames. The official descriptions do not provide a frame-generation multiplier, a guaranteed frame-rate increase attributable to PSSR alone, or a latency measurement for using it.

The 007 First Light example

In Sony’s official developer case study for 007 First Light, improved PSSR is described as reconstructing a sharper, more stable image from a lower internal resolution. The PS5 Pro version enables the feature by default. This illustrates the intended role of PSSR: improving the presentation of each rendered image while allowing the developer to balance internal resolution, image quality and performance.

More than 50 compatible titles

Sony’s updated-PSSR announcement in 2026 refers to more than 50 PS5 Pro titles. That figure describes the number of titles identified as supporting the updated technology at the time of the announcement; it does not mean every game uses the same reconstruction settings or offers the same frame-rate modes. Read the individual game’s options and patch notes when available.

120Hz support and the 80-fps example

A 120Hz-capable display matters when a game and the console output support high frame rates. Sony’s PS5 Pro product-page example for Stellar Blade says the game can run in 4K resolution at 50 frames per second or more, with improved grain and detail in PSSR upscale mode. The same quoted developer statement says the HFR option can reach 80 fps and requires 120Hz display support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The display does not create those frames. It provides enough refresh capacity to show output above 60Hz when the console and game supply it. A 60Hz panel cannot present an 80-fps output as 80 distinct refreshes, whereas a 120Hz television or monitor can accommodate that class of signal when the title supports it.

What to verify before buying or changing a display

  • Look for an explicit 120Hz input specification, not just a marketing claim about motion processing.
  • Check which HDMI input supports the required high-refresh signal; ports on the same display can differ.
  • Enable the display’s gaming or low-latency mode when available, then confirm that the console reports the expected refresh rate.
  • Use the cable supplied with the console or a suitable Ultra High Speed HDMI cable if your existing cable cannot carry the selected signal. The available evidence does not establish that every owner needs to replace a cable.

Comparing the choices in a competitive game

Option What it does Competitive-use question Display consideration
Performance mode Prioritizes a stable frame rate over the highest image quality, according to the game’s implementation. Does it deliver steadier frame pacing and more predictable control response? Usually targets 60Hz-class output, but verify the title’s stated mode.
HFR mode Targets a higher frame rate when the developer provides one. Is the higher output stable during matches, and does it feel better with your controller? May require a 120Hz display; Sony’s Stellar Blade example reaches 80 fps with 120Hz support required.
PSSR upscale mode Uses AI reconstruction to improve sharpness, detail and image stability from a lower internal resolution. Does the clearer image help target recognition without an observable responsiveness trade-off? Most useful on a high-resolution display; it does not, by itself, document extra generated frames.
Quality or resolution mode Favors higher internal resolution or visual settings over the game’s faster modes. Can you accept a lower or less consistent frame rate for the visual gain? A 4K display shows the benefit, but refresh capability does not change the mode’s frame-rate behavior.
Title-specific frame-generation-like option A developer-provided feature that may synthesize or otherwise add displayed frames. Does this implementation preserve acceptable control timing in this particular game? Follow the title’s stated refresh requirements; do not infer behavior from PSSR.

How to test PSSR and HFR without guessing

You do not need a universal benchmark to make a useful decision. Use the same map, training range or repeatable section of a game and compare settings under similar conditions.

  1. Record the baseline: Start with the game’s Performance mode. Note the displayed frame-rate target, camera smoothness and how quickly a reticle follows small stick movements.
  2. Test PSSR alone: Keep the frame-rate mode unchanged and enable PSSR. Inspect distant edges, thin geometry, text and moving objects. Look for cleaner detail, shimmering or reconstruction artifacts.
  3. Test HFR: If the game offers HFR, enable it and confirm that the display is operating at 120Hz when required. Repeat the same movement and aiming exercises.
  4. Check real play: Play several complete rounds or matches. A setting that looks impressive in a static scene may feel different during rapid turns, effects-heavy fights or online play.
  5. Choose the least compromised option: Keep the mode that gives you the most predictable control response, then add PSSR if its clarity benefit remains visible without undermining that response.

Input lag: what is known and what is not

It is reasonable to ask whether frame generation adds input lag. In general, a feature that displays synthesized frames can alter the relationship between controller input and displayed motion, especially when the underlying game simulation is running at a lower rate. The size and character of that effect depend on the game, its rendering pipeline, frame pacing, display processing and the implementation of the feature.

For PS5 Pro specifically, the official sources reviewed do not publish a latency measurement for PSSR or for a universal frame-generation mode. That means you should not quote a single millisecond penalty or promise that enabling or disabling PSSR will produce the same result in every title. Use the game’s own feel and any independently measured, title-specific testing available to you.

Signs that a setting is not working for you

  • Aiming feels delayed even though the image appears smoother.
  • Small camera corrections look inconsistent during fast turns.
  • Motion shows ghosting, double edges or unstable fine detail.
  • The game drops out of its intended high-frame-rate mode during effects-heavy scenes.

If any of these occur, return to the stable Performance mode, disable the separate frame-generation-like option if the game has one, and then retest PSSR independently. This isolates the image-reconstruction setting from other changes.

Game-by-game decision guide

Choose Performance mode first when

  • The game does not offer a clearly supported HFR mode.
  • Frame delivery fluctuates in Quality or resolution mode.
  • You play a precision-focused shooter, fighting game or racing title where consistent timing matters more than extra detail.

Try HFR mode when

  • The developer explicitly supports it and your display supports the required refresh rate.
  • The higher frame-rate target remains stable in the parts of the game you play competitively.
  • You can distinguish an improvement in camera and control smoothness rather than simply seeing a larger number in a menu.

Add PSSR when

  • The title’s patch supports it and the reconstructed image makes distant or fine detail easier to read.
  • Motion remains stable and you do not notice a responsiveness trade-off.
  • You are using a high-resolution display where the clarity improvement is visible from your normal seating distance.

Be cautious with a separate frame-generation-like option when

  • The game does not explain its latency or frame-pacing behavior.
  • You notice delayed controls, ghosting or inconsistent motion.
  • The feature is enabled alongside a lower base frame rate and the resulting control response is worse for your play style.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling every PS5 Pro enhancement frame generation: PSSR is documented as AI upscaling and reconstruction.
  • Assuming 4K means 120 fps: Resolution and refresh rate are separate targets; verify the game’s mode.
  • Buying a 120Hz display without checking the input path: The panel, HDMI port, console setting and game mode all have to support the desired signal.
  • Comparing screenshots instead of play: Competitive value comes from stable motion and predictable control, not only from sharper still images.
  • Generalizing from one title: Sony’s support statements and developer case studies describe behavior on a compatible-title basis.

Bottom line for competitive PS5 Pro play

For most competitive players, the sensible default is the game’s most stable Performance or HFR mode, followed by an A/B test of PSSR. PSSR can sharpen and stabilize the image, but Sony does not document it as a universal frame-generation switch. A 120Hz display is worthwhile when a supported title can output above 60 frames per second, as shown by the Stellar Blade HFR example at up to 80 fps. Because no universal latency benchmark is published, keep the setting that gives you the most consistent control response in the specific game you play.
