Dia can be a good Mac browser if you want organized tabs, profiles, split view, picture-in-picture, built-in ad and tracking blocking, and optional AI tools in one app. Its core browser features are free; AI features require a paid plan. The main cautions are that using AI can send relevant page content to an external model provider, Dia’s privacy statements are company claims rather than independent audit results, and Dia is not HIPAA-compliant and does not offer a Business Associate Agreement.
What Dia offers on Mac
Dia is a Chromium-based browser for macOS. Its free Better Browser plan includes the everyday browsing features most likely to matter to someone evaluating it as a Safari or other browser alternative:
- Profiles and tab groups for separating people, projects, or types of browsing.
- Split view and picture-in-picture video.
- Built-in ad and tracking blocking.
- Cross-device sync.
These features make Dia worth considering if you want a browser that organizes work across tabs and profiles without requiring an AI subscription. Chromium is its engine foundation, but that fact alone does not establish that Dia is faster, safer, or more compatible than another browser.
Which Dia features cost money?
Dia separates its browser features from its AI subscriptions. The company’s plans page lists these options:

Dia’s plans page describes a 14-day trial. It also says AI usage is measured in “Tasks” and that limits apply; optional top-ups and auto-reload are described there. Prices, plan details, and availability can change, so check Dia’s plans page before subscribing.
If you only want the browser’s tab and media features, the free plan may be enough. The paid plans make sense only if page-aware chat or the listed work-oriented AI features are worth the subscription to you.

What happens to your data?
Dia describes different data flows for ordinary browsing, AI requests, and Sync. Its statements below are the company’s own explanations, not independently audited findings.
Local data and AI requests
Dia’s security page says conversations, history, bookmarks, and files are encrypted and stored locally by default. When you ask Dia’s AI to work with a page, relevant information—such as your prompt and page context—is sent through Dia’s servers to an AI provider. Dia identifies Anthropic, OpenAI/Azure, and Google Gemini among its model-provider ecosystem. The company says its provider partners are contractually restricted from retaining user data or using it to train their models.

Product improvement and Sync
Dia says some content data is used by default to improve its product, is not tied to your account, and is deleted after 30 days. The company says you can turn this use off in Settings. It also says content data may be used to improve small on-device routing models, with an opt-out available.
Sync changes the data flow because information leaves your device and passes through Dia’s servers. Dia says synced content is end-to-end encrypted and unreadable to its servers. Its privacy policy, effective April 9, 2026, describes categories of data it may collect or process, including account and contact details, payment data, pages visited, assistant prompts and responses, Skills data, feedback, feature usage, IP addresses, and device data. The policy says Dia is hosted and operated in the United States and that data may be transferred to other countries.

Sensitive pages and work data
Dia warns that an AI request or proactive feature can send relevant page content to a third-party model. The company says passive features make a best-effort attempt to exclude sensitive sites, but that is not a guarantee. Dia explicitly states that it is not HIPAA-compliant and does not offer a Business Associate Agreement. That makes it unsuitable for workflows that require those protections, including handling protected health information under a HIPAA-compliant arrangement.

The official macOS changelog lists Dia 1.51.0, dated October 1, 2026. That release describes queued chat messages, steering Dia while it is responding, Loom search and transcript tools, HEIC image support in chat, improved tab search, and interface changes. The preceding 1.50.0 update added Figma tools and search across previous chats and browsing history.

The 1.50.0 update also announced that Dia is phasing out Memory and deleting existing Memory data. Older reviews that present Memory as a continuing feature may therefore be out of date. Check the official Dia changelog for release details.
What Dia has not established comparatively
The official product and policy materials describe features and data handling, but do not provide comparative benchmark statistics for speed, battery use, extension compatibility, accessibility, or ad-blocking performance. This does not show that Dia performs poorly; it means those qualities cannot be judged from the cited company materials alone. If one of them is decisive for you, try the browser with your own sites and workflow before switching.

Who should choose Dia?
- Consider it if you want free profile and tab organization, split view, picture-in-picture, built-in ad and tracking blocking, and sync in a Chromium-based Mac browser.
- Consider a paid plan only if you expect to use page-aware AI or the additional Better Days features enough to justify their listed monthly prices and usage limits.
- Be cautious with sensitive information: AI use can send page context to an external provider, and passive safeguards are not guaranteed to exclude every sensitive page.
- Do not use it for HIPAA-regulated workflows that require a compliant browser provider and a BAA; Dia says it offers neither.
