Usually, with strict separation and backups—but there is no official CD PROJEKT RED co-op mode documented in the available sources. OPEN//77 is the current documented multiplayer option. Its developers say the client runs alongside your Cyberpunk 2077 installation, while single-player saves and mods remain untouched and multiplayer state is held on community-operated dedicated servers. That is the project’s design statement, not independent save-corruption testing, so treat it as an Alpha mod platform and protect your files before trying it.
What “co-op” means in Cyberpunk 2077 right now
The reviewed official CD PROJEKT RED material does not document a built-in co-op or multiplayer mode for Cyberpunk 2077. OPEN//77 is an independent community platform rather than a CD PROJEKT RED product. Its documentation says it connects players to dedicated servers operated by the community, not to a peer-to-peer session hosted by one player’s game.

That distinction affects safety. A dedicated-server design can keep shared multiplayer state away from your local single-player profile, but it does not make every local modification harmless. The project labels itself Alpha, so bugs, crashes and compatibility problems remain possible. OPEN//77 also explicitly says it is “not affiliated with, endorsed by, or supported by CD PROJEKT RED” (OPEN//77 platform documentation).

What OPEN//77 claims to isolate
OPEN//77 states: “Your single-player game, saves and mods stay untouched.” According to the same documentation, its client runs alongside the existing installation and multiplayer state lives on the server (platform requirements and architecture). In practical terms, the project is designed so that joining a server does not overwrite your ordinary V saves, quest progress or local mod files.

Because this is a project claim rather than a published independent test, use it as a boundary to verify—not as a replacement for backups. An Alpha client can still expose installation, launcher, driver or mod conflicts that affect whether the game starts or loads correctly.
How save and mod risk actually works
There are two separate risks: what the multiplayer client is designed to do, and what your existing modified game can do when launched.
Multiplayer state versus local saves
OPEN//77 says multiplayer state is stored on its dedicated servers. Your single-player save files remain local to Cyberpunk 2077 and are not supposed to become the server’s persistent player database. This is why the project can describe its client as running alongside the installation instead of replacing it.
That separation does not guarantee that a crash cannot damage a file being written at the same time, nor does it prove that every third-party mod is compatible. Keep dated copies of your save directory before the first launch and before any game, mod or multiplayer-client update.
Why CD PROJEKT RED still warns about mods
CD PROJEKT RED’s technical-support guidance is broader than OPEN//77’s isolation statement. It says: “Using mods may lead to unexpected, incorrect behavior of the game and their effects may be kept in save files.” The company also says community mods are not reviewed by CD PROJEKT RED (official troubleshooting guidance for modified game content; official modding support).
A mod that adds or changes quests, items, scripts or world data can leave persistent information in a save. If that save is later opened with a different mod set, the result may be missing content, incorrect behavior or a load failure. A networking or script-hook mod can also conflict with a multiplayer client even if the save itself remains intact.

Exact requirements: build, expansion, operating system and access
OPEN//77’s documented compatibility target is narrow. You need all of the following at the same time:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Requirement | Documented value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Game build | Exactly version 2.31 | The client is tied to this build; a newer patch is not automatically compatible. |
| Edition/content | Legal Cyberpunk 2077 installation with Phantom Liberty | The expansion is a stated prerequisite, not an optional enhancement. |
| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11, 64-bit | The documented platform target excludes unsupported operating systems. |
| Access | OPEN//77 Alpha access | Availability depends on the project’s Alpha program. |
| Multiplayer backend | Community-operated dedicated servers | Shared multiplayer state is held remotely rather than in a local peer-hosted session. |
These requirements come from OPEN//77’s own platform documentation (https://open2077.net/docs/platform). Do not assume that “latest version” means “supported version.” If your launcher has already installed a build newer than the documented target, wait for an updated client or use a separate installation that matches the requirement. Downgrading files in place can create another source of corruption, so do not improvise unless the project publishes a supported method.
Existing mod setups: what can stay and what should be isolated
REDmod and legacy archive mods
REDmod is a free downloadable content component that provides integrated mod loading. Legacy archive-based mods remain supported, but they do not appear in the REDmod menu (CD PROJEKT RED modding support). A mod being loadable by REDmod—or simply working in single-player—does not establish OPEN//77 compatibility.
Keep a record of which mods are installed, their versions and whether each one changes scripts, saves, networking or core game behavior. Cosmetic replacements are generally easier to isolate than script frameworks, but no compatibility category is guaranteed by the sources available here.
Mods that deserve extra caution
- Script and gameplay overhauls: These can alter persistent quest, inventory or world state that a save expects.
- Save editors and progression tools: They directly change data that may be written back into a save.
- Networking, multiplayer or hook frameworks: They may compete with the client’s own hooks and connection logic.
- Core engine and executable replacements: They can prevent the game or launcher from starting and complicate clean removal.
- Visual-only replacements: They are not automatically safe, but are usually easier to disable for a controlled test because they do not intentionally change save state.
For a first test, disable or move out anything that changes scripts, saves, networking or core behavior. Preserve your original mod files outside the game directory so you can restore the setup after testing.
Safe installation and launch procedure
Use this sequence to keep the single-player profile recoverable.
Best Value
- Cyberpunk 2077 is an open world, an action adventure story set in night city
- Become a cyberpunk, an urban mercenary equipped with cybernetic enhancements and build your legend on the streets of Night city
- Take the riskiest job of your life and go after a prototype implant that is the key to immortality
- Close the game and launcher. Do not copy files while Cyberpunk 2077 is running or while a cloud-sync service is writing a save.
- Back up saves with a date. Copy the complete Cyberpunk 2077 save directory to a separate drive or clearly named folder. Keep at least one copy that the launcher cannot silently overwrite.
- Inventory the installation. Record the current game build, Phantom Liberty installation, REDmod state and every mod. Save screenshots of launcher settings if you use custom launch arguments.
- Create separation. Prefer a separate clean game installation or launcher profile for multiplayer. If storage makes that impossible, maintain a clean, restorable copy of the unmodified game files and keep mod files outside the active directory until compatibility is known.
- Match the documented build. Verify that the installation meets the exact version requirement before launching OPEN//77. Do not substitute a newer patch simply because it is available in the launcher.
- Install only the documented client. Follow OPEN//77’s current installation instructions and avoid adding unrelated loaders, script hooks or “fixes” from unverified sources.
- Run a controlled first launch. Start with the clean profile and no script, save, networking or core-engine mods. Confirm that the client reaches its menu and can connect before adding anything else.
- Test single-player separately. Exit the multiplayer client, launch the clean single-player profile and load a copied save. Never use your only current save as the first test.
- Add changes one at a time. If the project later documents compatibility for a particular mod, re-enable only that mod, launch, and test before adding another. Keep a dated backup after each known-good change.
Comparison: ordinary modded single-player versus OPEN//77
| Decision point | Modded single-player | OPEN//77 multiplayer |
|---|---|---|
| Support status | Community-created modifications; CD PROJEKT RED does not review them. | Independent Alpha project; not affiliated with, endorsed by or supported by CD PROJEKT RED. |
| Installation behavior | Mods alter or add files in the game installation. | Documentation says the client runs alongside the existing installation. |
| Save ownership | Local saves can retain effects from mods. | Documentation says single-player saves stay untouched and multiplayer state is held on dedicated servers. |
| Build requirement | Depends on each mod and the game version it supports. | Exact build 2.31, Phantom Liberty, 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 and Alpha access. |
| Session architecture | Single-player game process. | Community-operated dedicated servers rather than a peer-to-peer host session. |
| Maturity | Varies by mod; conflicts are possible. | Alpha, with possible bugs, crashes and compatibility issues. |
The table shows why “safe” is conditional. OPEN//77’s architecture is intended to protect local single-player data, while CD PROJEKT RED’s warning still applies to the modified game you launch around it.
Symptoms, diagnosis and recovery
The game crashes or will not start after modification
Remove the latest client or mod change and test the clean profile. Check that the game build still matches the multiplayer requirement. If the installation remains unstable, CD PROJEKT RED’s official guidance is to perform a clean installation to remove modified content and contact the mod creator when appropriate (support instructions).
A save loads incorrectly or reports missing content
Exit without saving over the affected file. Restore the most recent dated backup and reproduce the problem with the same mod set that created the save. Do not open a heavily modified save in a clean profile and then overwrite the original; that can remove or alter content the save expects.
Single-player works, but multiplayer does not connect
Confirm Alpha access, the exact supported build, Phantom Liberty and the Windows requirement. Disable extra networking or script-hook mods and test the separate clean profile. A working single-player launch does not prove that a mod is compatible with OPEN//77’s client or server protocol.
You want to return to your original mod setup
Close all clients, restore the backed-up save directory only if needed, and reactivate mods from your inventory one at a time. Keep the multiplayer installation and profile disabled until you have confirmed that the ordinary single-player profile loads the expected save.
Bottom line for existing saves
OPEN//77 is the documented route for trying Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer, and its design aims to leave single-player saves and mods untouched. That makes a separate profile, exact build matching and dated backups the practical conditions for a low-risk test. It is not an official CD PROJEKT RED feature, it is still Alpha, and the publisher’s warning that mods can cause incorrect behavior or persist effects in saves remains fully relevant. Treat your clean single-player installation and backups as the source of truth; treat the multiplayer client as an isolated experiment.
