There is no evidence here that Brave is growing because people are replacing Google’s AI Overviews. Brave reports substantial browser and AI-answer usage, but those figures do not show why people use Brave or whether they switched from Google. Brave Search is a genuine alternative: it presents AI-generated answers with citations alongside conventional results and works in browsers beyond Brave.
What Brave Search’s AI answers do
Brave introduced Answer with AI in Brave Search in April 2024. It described the feature as combining information from multiple sources into an answer with citations, displayed alongside traditional search results. Its launch announcement said the feature was free on desktop and mobile, but that was the announcement’s 2024 access policy, not a guarantee of current availability or pricing. Brave’s announcement also put Brave Search at about 27 million queries a day, or nearly 10 billion annually, at launch.
Brave’s current help documentation calls concise answers with references AI Answers. It distinguishes them from Ask Brave, which supports longer responses, follow-up chat, and Deep Research. Brave says its AI summaries draw on web search results and cite their sources. Those citations help readers check where information came from, but they do not by themselves establish that an answer is accurate. Brave’s AI help page and Brave Search describe the product.
Brave Search is not limited to Brave Browser: it can be used from other browsers. And choosing Brave Browser does not require choosing Brave Search; Brave says its browser users can select a different search engine. This makes browser choice and search-engine choice separate decisions.

What Brave’s growth figures establish—and what they don’t
Brave’s 2025 milestone announcement reports more than 100 million monthly active users for Brave Browser and more than 15 million AI-generated search answers served per day. These are different measures: the first counts monthly active browser users, while the second counts answers served, not unique people, searches, or browser installations. Brave also said about 8% of its daily queries came from other browsers, including Chrome; that is a share of queries, not a share of users. Brave’s milestone announcement is the source for these company-reported figures. The retrieved announcement does not establish an exact publication date.
None of those numbers identifies how many users came from Google, whether they stopped using AI Overviews, or what motivated any change. They are usage milestones, not evidence that Brave grew by replacing Google’s feature.

How Brave Search and Google AI Overviews differ
The observable distinction is how the tools present and extend an answer, not which one is more accurate. Brave describes AI Answers as concise, cited answers alongside ordinary search results; Ask Brave adds follow-up chat and deeper research. The materials cited here do not provide an independent, controlled comparison of answer quality, accuracy, or user preference.
Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai said in remarks published July 22, 2026, that AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of a unified Search experience and that its AI-powered features are driving increased Search usage. He also said AI Mode had more than 1 billion monthly active users following its global expansion the previous October. Those are Google’s own reported figures, not independent measurements—and AI Mode’s monthly active users are not directly comparable with Brave Browser’s monthly active users. What the privacy claims support
Ofcom’s 2025 discussion paper characterizes Brave as an established search player with AI summaries and its Leo chatbot, and describes Brave’s approach as avoiding tracking or profiling. It says Brave uses third-party models hosted by Brave for its generative AI features, citing Brave material updated in 2025. Brave Search offers an AI-assisted search experience with cited sources and conventional links, and its search service can be used without adopting its browser. Brave reports notable browser and answer usage; Google reports high AI Mode usage and says AI features are increasing Search use. Taken together, these claims show that both companies report substantial engagement with AI search, not that Brave’s growth came from users abandoning Google AI Overviews. Brave Chief of Search Josep M. Pujol made a similar distinction in the 2024 launch announcement: “Are they going to replace them entirely? No, I don’t think so, right?”
