Yes. Boruto is an official continuation of the Naruto story. The clearest way to understand its canon is by medium: the manga is the primary sequel text, the anime is an authorized adaptation that also expands the story with television-original material, and the novels are officially published supplemental works. They all belong to the licensed Naruto/Boruto franchise, but an event’s authority depends on whether it appears in the manga, anime continuity, or a novel tie-in.

What “canon” means for Boruto

“Canon” is often used as a simple yes-or-no label, but that approach does not describe Boruto very well. Official Naruto material exists in several formats, and each format has a different relationship to the central storyline.

For this guide, canon means material officially authorized and connected to the Naruto continuity. That definition distinguishes publication status from priority when two versions tell the same story differently. A manga chapter, an anime episode and a licensed novel can all be official while still serving different roles.

  • Manga continuity: the primary reference for the sequel’s central plot.
  • Anime continuity: an official adaptation that includes manga-based stories and additional material made for television.
  • Novel continuity: authorized novelizations and tie-in stories that supplement the franchise.

When versions disagree, identify the version first. “Manga continuity,” “anime continuity” and “novel tie-in” are more precise than calling an entire medium either canon or filler.

Why the official credits matter

Canon discussions often begin with who made a work and how it was released. VIZ identifies BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS as a Shueisha publication and credits creation and supervision to Masashi Kishimoto, art to Mikio Ikemoto and the script to Ukyo Kodachi. The Naruto Official Site likewise presents Boruto as part of the official Naruto and Boruto project and lists its manga and anime production credits.

Those credits do not mean that Kishimoto personally wrote every chapter, scene or television episode. They establish that Boruto is an authorized continuation developed within the franchise, with a credited creative team. That is why “official” is a more dependable starting point than fan labels such as “filler” or “non-canon.”

The manga is the primary Boruto continuity

The manga provides the main sequel storyline and is the safest reference when a reader wants the events that define the ongoing plot. VIZ credits the original Boruto project with creation and supervision by Masashi Kishimoto, art by Mikio Ikemoto and a script by Ukyo Kodachi. The Naruto Official Site also lists Boruto’s manga and anime production credits. VIZ’s copyright information identifies BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS as a Shueisha work.

Those records support treating the manga as the core sequel continuity rather than as a side story. It follows the next generation of the ninja world established by Naruto and supplies the primary sequence of major plot developments, character changes and world-building.

Use the manga as your default citation when someone asks what “really happened” in the central sequel plot. That does not erase other versions; it simply gives discussions a stable reference point. If an anime episode adds a mission or a novel supplies a character’s thoughts, those additions can be discussed on their own terms without rewriting the manga’s baseline.

Where to start reading

  1. Begin with Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.
  2. After completing that series, continue with Boruto: Two Blue Vortex.

This order follows the central manga storyline without asking you to reconcile anime-only or novel-only events first. If you later watch the anime or read a novel, you can classify additions against that established manga baseline.

What Two Blue Vortex changes for the reading order

Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is the current manga continuation. VIZ’s Shonen Jump catalog lists it as an active series, credits creation and supervision to Masashi Kishimoto and art to Mikio Ikemoto, and displays current chapter entries. The Naruto Official Site maintains a dedicated Two Blue Vortex special site with story material and an Ikemoto author question-and-answer feature.

Chapter dates, volume availability and the active chapter list can change, so consult the current listings when you need release information. The important continuity point is stable: Two Blue Vortex follows Boruto: Naruto Next Generations as the primary ongoing manga story.

Do not treat a changing chapter count as a canon dispute. A chapter can be newly released, collected later in a volume or listed differently across regional catalogs while remaining part of the same ongoing manga continuation. For a spoiler-sensitive reading plan, finish the available Naruto Next Generations material before beginning Two Blue Vortex, then follow the official chapter schedule.

Is the Boruto anime canon or filler?

The anime is official Naruto/Boruto continuity, but it is not a panel-for-panel reproduction of the manga. The Naruto Official Site presents Boruto as an official anime and lists its production credits, including Kishimoto as writer or supervisor, Ikemoto as manga artist and Kodachi in the credited creative team.

Television production requires more episodes and pacing flexibility than a monthly or otherwise limited manga release can provide. As a result, the anime adapts manga arcs and also tells stories created specifically for television. Calling every non-manga episode “filler” loses that distinction: some anime-original material expands the setting or develops characters, while other episodes may simply be less important to the manga’s central plot.

Why anime-only material exists

An adaptation may need connective stories while the manga is publishing, room for character development between major confrontations, or a way to show events that the manga summarizes quickly. Those production needs explain why the anime can contain missions, conversations and introductions that do not appear as manga panels. They also explain why an anime viewer may know a detail that a manga-only reader has never encountered.

Official status and direct manga origin are separate questions. An anime-original episode is not automatically “fake,” but neither should it be presented as a manga event without identifying its source.

How to classify anime arcs

  • Manga-adapted arcs: the safest overlap with the primary manga continuity. They animate events that originate in the sequel’s main text.
  • Anime-original arcs: official anime continuity. Treat their details as part of the television version unless later manga material confirms or incorporates them.
  • Mixed arcs: stories that use a manga event as a foundation while adding scenes, missions or character moments for television. Classify the added material as anime expansion unless a primary manga source establishes it.

The available official listings do not publish a universal, episode-by-episode canon policy. Therefore, no accurate blanket rule can label every anime episode either categorically canon or categorically non-canon. The appropriate answer depends on the arc and the version being discussed.

What “anime canon” means in practice

Fans often use “anime canon” to describe material that is not directly adapted from a manga chapter but is still treated as part of the anime’s own continuity. That phrase is useful when it signals the medium, not when it claims that the manga has already confirmed every event.

If a later manga chapter refers to an anime-created character, location or event, that element gains support in the manga continuity as well. Until that happens, it remains an anime-continuity detail. This does not make it illegitimate; it tells you where the information comes from and how much weight to give it when comparing versions.

A common pitfall is to use an online filler list as if it were an official ruling. Such lists can help you skip episodes, but they are fan-made viewing tools, not a published canon policy. Check the arc’s relationship to the manga and label your discussion accordingly.

Are the Boruto novels canon?

The novels are officially published Boruto works, but they are best understood as supplemental stories and novelizations rather than as automatic equivalents of manga chapters. Shueisha’s listing for BORUTO—NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS—NOVEL 1 identifies it as a novelization connected to the original manga and credits the Boruto creative team.

That publisher record establishes authorized publication. It does not create a blanket rule that every event in every novel has exactly the same authority as the manga. A novel may retell a story already adapted elsewhere, add scenes around an established event or present a tie-in adventure that has not been addressed by the primary text.

How to use a novel without losing track of continuity

  1. Identify whether the book is a novelization of a manga or anime story.
  2. Compare its major events with the corresponding primary-text version.
  3. Keep details that are unique to the novel labeled as novel continuity unless the manga or anime later adopts them.
  4. If a contradiction appears, name the conflicting versions instead of declaring the entire novel invalid.

This method recognizes the novels’ official status while preserving the manga’s role as the main reference. It also avoids claiming that every licensed tie-in detail must be treated as equal to a manga chapter.

Novelization wording can also provide internal thoughts, transitions or background that visual media leave implicit. Enjoy those details as part of the book’s version, but do not use a line found only in prose as proof of a manga fact unless the manga confirms it.

Manga, anime and novels compared

Medium Source authority Relationship to the main plot Original material Best use for newcomers When versions conflict
Manga Primary Shueisha sequel text, with official credits for the Boruto creative team Defines the central sequel storyline Primary plot events and manga storytelling Read Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, then Two Blue Vortex Use manga continuity as the primary reference
Anime Official Naruto/Boruto television production Adapts manga arcs and expands the setting Anime-original episodes, scenes and arcs in addition to adaptations Watch for a fuller, animated experience and expanded character material Label a detail as manga-adapted or anime continuity; check whether the manga later confirms it
Novels Authorized publisher releases, including Shueisha listings Novelizations and supplemental tie-ins Book-specific narration, scenes and stories Use after the main story when you want additional context or prose adaptations Keep unique details in novel continuity unless another primary source adopts them

The comparison is about function, not quality. A reader who values the shortest route should choose the manga; a reader who wants atmosphere, performances and extra missions may prefer the anime; a reader seeking interior narration or prose retellings may choose the novels. None of those preferences changes which source is being cited.

Do you need to read the manga before watching Boruto?

No. The anime is designed as an official entry point and presents its own coherent viewing experience. You can start with the anime if you prefer animation, voice performances and a broader set of television stories.

Reading the manga first is useful when your priority is the most direct route through the central sequel plot. It gives you a fixed reference for major developments and makes it easier to recognize which anime scenes are adaptations, expansions or entirely new material.

Choose the manga first when you want

  • The shortest path to the primary ongoing storyline.
  • The version to consult when an adaptation and a later chapter differ.
  • A reading order that leads directly into Two Blue Vortex.

Choose the anime first when you want

  • Animated action, performances and soundtrack-driven presentation.
  • Additional missions and character interactions made for television.
  • A broader continuity that can be enjoyed without treating every episode as a manga chapter.

You can also combine them: follow the manga for the core plot, then watch the anime’s corresponding arcs and expansions. Marking where you switch media prevents an anime-only detail from being mistaken for a manga event.

What to do when manga and anime details conflict

Differences do not automatically mean that one entire medium is “fake.” Adaptations may adjust timing, dialogue, character introductions or the order in which information is revealed. The useful question is which version the discussion requires.

  1. Name the source. State whether the claim comes from a manga chapter, an anime episode or a novel.
  2. Check whether the event is adapted. A scene that exists in both formats has a shared foundation, even if wording or presentation changes.
  3. Separate shared facts from additions. Keep the common event distinct from anime-only or novel-only details.
  4. Give the manga priority for the central sequel plot. Use the anime or novels to explain their own continuity and expansions.
  5. Look for later confirmation. If the manga adopts an element first introduced in the anime or a novel, that element now has support in the primary text too.

This approach is more reliable than trying to assign one permanent rank to every scene across all releases. It also prevents a minor adaptation change from becoming an exaggerated claim that the whole anime or novel is invalid.

Common claims that overstate Boruto’s canon status

“Everything in the anime is manga canon.”

That is too broad. The anime is official, but it contains television-original material. Official status and direct manga origin are separate questions.

“Everything outside the manga is filler.”

That is also too broad. The anime’s additions are part of its own official continuity, and the novels are authorized publications. They simply do not have the same role as the primary manga text.

“Every novel event has the same authority as a manga chapter.”

Publisher authorization confirms that a novel is an official tie-in. It does not, by itself, establish an identical canon rank for every event in every book.

“Masashi Kishimoto personally wrote every anime episode.”

The official credits support a writer or supervisor role in the Boruto project, not a claim that Kishimoto wrote each television episode. Episode-level authorship should not be inferred from the franchise credits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A percentage can identify how much of the anime is canon.”

No authoritative figure establishes a reliable percentage of Boruto episodes that are “manga canon.” A numerical split would suggest a precision that the official sources do not provide.

“A later anime reference automatically rewrites the manga.”

It does not. A reference can establish that an element exists in anime continuity. It becomes part of the primary manga continuity only when the manga itself confirms or uses it.

A practical canon map for new readers

  1. Set your baseline: use the manga as the primary continuity.
  2. Read in sequence: complete Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, then move to Two Blue Vortex.
  3. Add the anime deliberately: watch manga-adapted arcs for an animated version of the core story and anime-original arcs as expanded television continuity.
  4. Add novels selectively: use novelizations to revisit established stories and tie-ins for additional material, labeling details unique to the book.
  5. Record disagreements by source: write “the manga says,” “the anime shows” or “the novel describes” rather than treating a conflict as a franchise-wide contradiction.

This map lets you enjoy every official format without forcing them into an artificial single hierarchy. If you are avoiding spoilers, finish one medium’s arc before checking another version of the same event, since adaptations may reveal information in a different order.

What is current about the manga?

Two Blue Vortex is the active continuation listed by VIZ and the Naruto Official Site. VIZ’s catalog provides current chapter entries, while the Naruto site maintains a dedicated special page and Ikemoto’s author Q&A. Because chapter schedules and volume listings change, those official catalogs are the appropriate places to verify the latest release information.

The continuity guidance does not depend on a fixed chapter count: read the completed Naruto Next Generations manga first, then follow the currently publishing Two Blue Vortex chapters.

The bottom line on Boruto canon

Boruto is canon in the broad, official-continuity sense: it is an authorized continuation of Naruto. For questions about the central sequel plot, use the manga first. Treat the anime as official adaptation plus expansion, and treat the novels as authorized supplemental stories. When two versions differ, identify the medium and let the manga serve as the primary reference rather than declaring every other official story either fully identical or wholly disposable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Boruto canon to Naruto?

Yes. Boruto is an officially authorized continuation of Naruto. The manga is the primary sequel continuity, while the anime and novels are official adaptations or supplemental versions.

Is the Boruto anime canon or filler?

It is official anime continuity that combines manga-adapted arcs with anime-original material. Do not label every episode as wholly canon or wholly filler; classify the specific arc and identify whether the manga later confirms its details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the Boruto novels canon?

They are authorized Shueisha publications, including novelizations and tie-in stories. Their official status does not prove that every event has exactly the same authority as a manga chapter, so keep unique details labeled as novel continuity unless another primary source adopts them.

Do I need to read the manga before watching Boruto?

No. You can start with the anime and enjoy its own coherent viewing experience. Read the manga first if you want the shortest route through the central plot or a firm reference for comparing anime additions.

What is the correct Boruto manga reading order?

Read Boruto: Naruto Next Generations first, then continue with the active sequel Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. Verify current chapter and volume information through the official VIZ and Naruto listings.

What should I do when the manga and anime contradict each other?

Name the version, separate shared events from added details, and use manga continuity as the primary reference for the central sequel plot. Treat unconfirmed additions as anime continuity until the manga adopts them.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Boruto is official Naruto continuity. Read Boruto: Naruto Next Generations and Two Blue Vortex for the primary manga storyline, watch the anime as an official adaptation with expansions, and treat the novels as authorized supplements. When details differ, identify the medium instead of reducing every version to “canon” or “filler.”
