Avengers: Secret Wars is still scheduled for December 17, 2027, according to the schedule reported by Variety. A report that filming may not start until January 2027 has raised questions about the date, but the claim comes from leakers—not an official Marvel announcement—and does not confirm that the theatrical release will move.

Is Avengers: Secret Wars delayed?

There is no confirmed release-date delay in the reporting available as of October 2, 2026. TechRadar reported on October 1 that several leakers said filming would begin in January 2027, rather than earlier. That is a reported production delay, not evidence that Marvel or Disney has changed the release date.

TechRadar attributed the initial warning to the X account Apocalyptic Horseman and said DanielRPK and Alex P had also heard the same. The report said TechRadar had approached Marvel and Disney for comment; it did not report a response. 9to5Marvel likewise described the January start as unconfirmed and said Marvel had not announced a filming date. These reports show the claim is circulating, but do not amount to studio confirmation.

When is Secret Wars scheduled to come out?

The date in the schedule reported by Variety is December 17, 2027. Variety reported on May 23, 2025, that Disney moved Secret Wars from May 7, 2027, as part of a schedule change that also moved Avengers: Doomsday to December 18, 2026. The January 2027 filming rumor is not a subsequent release-date announcement.

What the rumored filming schedule could mean

TechRadar reported that Apocalyptic Horseman described a possible wrap in late April or early May 2027. If filming starts in January and finishes in that spring window, the film would have roughly seven to eight months before the currently scheduled December 17 release for post-production. That is a conditional estimate based on the rumored dates and the reported release schedule—not a confirmed Marvel production timeline.

A shorter interval could make the schedule feel tighter, but it does not establish that the film will miss its date. The leaker, according to TechRadar, did not say a release-date delay was inevitable. No formal schedule change tied to the filming claim was reported.

What is known about the Russos’ work on both films?

The Associated Press reported that Joe and Anthony Russo were finishing Doomsday while “soft prepping” production on Secret Wars. That provides context for overlapping work on the two films, but AP did not identify it as the cause of the rumored January start. Joe Russo described the workload this way: “When you’re doing one of these movies it’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done,” and “When you’re doing two of them, it’s almost inconceivable.”

How to judge new release-date claims

  • Official schedule change: A formal announcement or an updated distributor schedule would establish that the theatrical date has changed.
  • Leaker report: A claimed start or wrap date can signal a possible production shift, but remains unconfirmed unless the studio verifies it.
  • Post-production estimate: A calculation based on rumored filming dates and the scheduled release date describes a possible constraint, not proof of a delay.

For now, the distinction is straightforward: January 2027 is a rumored filming start, while December 17, 2027 remains the release date in the schedule reported by Variety.
