Short answer: ARC Raiders is worth buying for a PvE-leaning player only if you are comfortable with an online extraction game whose normal identity is PvPvE. You can play solo, form two- or three-person teams, complete quests, craft equipment, upgrade workshop stations and follow skill paths while fighting ARC machines. However, other players are part of the standard risk, and extracted loot can be lost when a run fails.

A dedicated PvE matchmaking toggle was tested from October 13–20, 2026. It removed player-to-player damage, but Embark described the test as temporary and explicitly said it was not a promise of a permanent PvE mode. Anyone who requires an offline campaign or guaranteed, permanent PvE-only matchmaking should wait.

What ARC Raiders is—and what a PvE buyer is actually purchasing

ARC Raiders is an online multiplayer extraction adventure. You leave the underground settlement of Speranza, search the surface for valuable materials, fight or evade hostile ARC machines, and try to reach an extraction point with your haul. Human Raiders occupy the same spaces, so the standard game is PvPvE rather than a conventional cooperative campaign.

The attraction for a PvE-focused player is the surrounding structure: repeatable expeditions, environmental enemies, trader relationships, quests, crafting, workshop development and long-term skill progression. The tension comes from having to decide how long to stay, how much loot to risk and whether another player is nearby. A successful extraction advances your resources and projects; a failed run can leave you without what you carried in or collected.

Good fit for this type of PvE player

  • You enjoy fighting computer-controlled enemies but can tolerate occasional encounters with human opponents.
  • You like gathering materials, learning blueprints, improving a home base and making incremental character builds.
  • You prefer short, repeatable online expeditions to a scripted, linear campaign.
  • You want to play alone sometimes but do not require the game to pause or work without an internet connection.

Who should wait

  • Players looking for an offline story mode or a guaranteed single-player campaign.
  • Anyone who considers PvP interference unacceptable, even when the main objective is fighting machines.
  • Buyers making their decision solely on the temporary PvE matchmaking experiment.

Does ARC Raiders have a PvE-only mode?

There is no established permanent PvE-only mode in the currently documented offering. Embark ran an official PvE Toggle Beta Test from October 13 through October 20, 2026. During that window, players could switch between classic PvPvE matchmaking and a PvE matchmaking option.

What the PvE test changed

Element How the test worked
Player damage Player-to-player damage was disabled, so Raiders could not directly harm one another.
Party sizes Solos, Duos and Trios could enter the same PvE matchmaking pool.
Main focus Scavenging, quests, exploration and cooperative play against ARC threats.
Excluded conditions Night Raids, Hidden Bunker, Locked Gate and Frigate conditions were not available.
Loot economy Overall loot value was reduced because the safer environment lowered the usual risk.
PvPvE rating PvPvE matchmaking rating was not affected by PvE-test sessions.

The test therefore answered what a safer expedition could feel like, not whether ARC Raiders had converted into a separate cooperative campaign. Its restrictions also meant that a PvE session did not expose players to every map condition or activity in the normal game.

Because Solos, Duos and Trios could share the test pool, a solo player could use the safer queue without needing to assemble a group. That did not make the game offline: the session still depended on online matchmaking and the wider extraction infrastructure. It also did not create a separate progression track; Embark said the test was intended to evaluate the matchmaking experience rather than introduce a new PvE progression system.

Why the test does not settle the buying decision

Embark’s announcement, signed by Aleks, Executive Producer for ARC Raiders, said the test was not a promise that a PvE mode would exist in the future, while indicating that the team was seriously considering it. That wording matters: the toggle was time-limited, and its continuation, rules and availability are not guaranteed. Buy the game for the permanent PvPvE design and treat any future PvE option as possible upside, not as a promised feature.

Can you play ARC Raiders solo?

Yes. The PlayStation FAQ describes ARC Raiders as online and multiplayer-only while confirming that one Raider can go Topside alone or join a team of two or three. Solo means entering the shared online extraction environment without party members. It does not mean an offline campaign, a pause-capable single-player mode or a private world isolated from other players.

What solo runs feel like

A solo Raider must handle navigation, machine encounters, inventory decisions and extraction alone. You can choose to avoid other players, but the standard PvPvE rules still allow them to be present. That makes information and timing important: noisy fights can attract attention, and staying for one more item increases both potential rewards and exposure.

Solo play also changes how you evaluate equipment. A squad can divide jobs, revive a downed teammate or carry different tools; a solo player must cover more contingencies with one loadout. Quests may be easier to plan alone because there is no party disagreement over objectives, but every detour and repair consumes your own time and supplies.

The game requires an internet connection, an Embark ID account and an account for the platform on which you play. A reliable connection is therefore part of the practical solo requirement; disconnecting is not equivalent to pausing a local game.

How progression works

ARC Raiders ties progression to what you do between and during expeditions. You bring resources back to Speranza, develop relationships with traders, complete their quests, sell or reuse loot, manufacture equipment and invest in capabilities that make later trips more flexible.

The expedition-to-workshop loop

  1. Prepare in Speranza. Select equipment and decide how much valuable gear you are willing to risk on the next trip.
  2. Go Topside. Search the environment for loot and materials while managing ARC machines, other Raiders and changing map conditions.
  3. Complete objectives. Trader quests and exploration goals can shape your route instead of leaving every run as undirected scavenging.
  4. Extract safely. Reaching extraction with your haul turns the run into usable resources. Failing to leave safely can cost the items you carried or gathered.
  5. Convert the haul into progress. Sell loot, learn blueprints, craft replacements, improve workshop stations and prepare for a more demanding expedition.

Crafting and workshop upgrades

Resources can be sold or turned into new weapons, gadgets and gear. The workshop is not merely cosmetic: upgrading its stations expands what you can produce and supports a longer-term preparation loop. You also learn blueprints, allowing specific equipment to become part of your repeatable loadout rather than a one-time find.

Field improvisation matters as well. The documented progression systems include improvised repairs, so a run is not simply a choice between perfect equipment and immediate failure. Repairs and crafted replacements help you stretch limited supplies, although they do not remove the danger of carrying valuable gear through a contested extraction.

Skill paths

Experience unlocks skills across three named paths:

  • Survival: abilities oriented toward staying effective and enduring the hazards of an expedition.
  • Mobility: improvements that support movement, positioning and traversal.
  • Conditioning: upgrades that strengthen your ability to operate under pressure.

The three-path structure gives a PvE-oriented player meaningful build choices without requiring every run to be played identically. It also means progression is broader than simply finding a stronger weapon. A player who prefers cautious scavenging can emphasize a different combination from someone who takes faster routes through machine-heavy areas.

Quests, Trials and leaderboards

Trader quests provide specific reasons to revisit locations and gather particular resources. Trials and leaderboards add optional performance goals for players who want to measure efficiency or compete beyond ordinary extraction. These systems make the game more repeatable, but they are still embedded in the online extraction format rather than a self-contained PvE story campaign.

Maps, machines and replayability

Four launch maps are documented: Dam Battlegrounds, Buried City, The Spaceport and the Blue Gate. A location is not fixed in practice. Weather, time of day, special conditions, enemy placement and map mechanics can alter routes, threats and the value of a particular objective.

The setting combines remnants of Italy with severe infrastructure built for space travel in an Unreal Engine 5 world. ARC machines range from small drones to much larger threats. Named examples include Ticks, Snitch, Leaper, Bombardier and Queen. Their different scales and behaviors create a PvE layer that is more varied than fighting one repeated enemy type.

For a PvE buyer, this variability is the main replayability argument. The same map can ask for a different approach when visibility, weather, conditions or enemy composition changes. It does not eliminate repetition, and it does not turn the game into a scripted campaign, but it gives extraction runs a changing set of tactical problems.

Replayability also comes from the interaction between systems. A quest can send you toward a location whose current conditions favor stealth, while a workshop project may require materials found in a more dangerous section. Trials provide another reason to optimize routes after you understand a map, and changing enemy combinations can make a previously familiar extraction feel less predictable.

Cross-play, platforms and party size

The official site describes seamless social play across PlayStation, Xbox and PC, and Steam lists cross-platform multiplayer. That means players on supported systems can form parties and play together rather than being locked to one hardware ecosystem.

Platform or feature Documented support
PC Steam and Epic Games Store.
Console PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
Cloud GeForce NOW is listed as an available platform.
Older PlayStation hardware No PS4 version is confirmed on the current PlayStation information.
Cross-play Cross-platform social play and multiplayer across PlayStation, Xbox and PC.
Party size Solo entry or teams of two or three; PlayStation’s product page lists up to 21 online players simultaneously.

What is—and is not—established about cross-progression

Cross-play is explicitly documented. The available platform descriptions do not fully specify every account-linking and shared-progression rule, so you should not assume that an unlocked skill, blueprint, inventory or purchase will transfer without restriction between every platform. Check the current account-support information for your intended combination before buying on a second platform.

Cross-play is most useful for a regular group split between PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Party size remains capped at three Raiders, even though the PlayStation product page lists up to 21 online players in a session. The larger session population is therefore not a 21-person co-op team; it describes the number of online players supported in the match environment.

How much PvP pressure should a PvE player expect?

In the normal game, human opponents are not an optional background detail. They share objectives, routes and extraction areas with you. Some may avoid contact, while others may attack for your equipment or position. This uncertainty is the source of the game’s extraction tension: a run can be going well against machines and still become dangerous when another Raider appears.

The temporary PvE matchmaking test removed direct player damage, but it also lowered overall loot value and excluded several special conditions. A safer queue therefore changed both the threat model and the economic reward. If your enjoyment depends on building a permanent progression routine without ever risking a fight with another player, the unresolved status of that mode is a substantial reason to wait.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players comparing ARC Raiders with a conventional co-op shooter should focus on risk tolerance rather than enemy variety alone. In a conventional PvE match, completing the objective normally guarantees the reward. Here, the reward is contingent on extraction, and another Raider can interrupt the final step. That tension is a feature for extraction fans and a cost for players seeking predictable, low-stress progression.

How ARC Raiders compares with a conventional PvE shooter

Use these questions when comparing ARC Raiders with a campaign or co-op game:

  • Is PvE permanent? ARC Raiders’ normal offering is PvPvE. The safer PvE toggle was a dated test, not a guaranteed permanent queue.
  • Can it be played offline? No. Solo entry still requires an internet connection, an Embark ID and a platform account.
  • How much loot risk is acceptable? Extraction creates loss pressure that a standard mission-based shooter may not have.
  • How deep is the long-term loop? Trader relationships, quests, blueprints, workshop stations, crafting, repairs, three skill paths, Trials and leaderboards provide goals beyond a single campaign.
  • How flexible is the party setup? You can enter solo or with two- or three-person teams, and supported systems can play together through cross-play.
  • Will maps stay familiar? Weather, time of day, special conditions, enemies and mechanics can change how the four launch maps play.

This makes ARC Raiders a stronger fit for someone who enjoys systems-driven repetition and a changing risk calculation than for someone who wants a fixed sequence of handcrafted missions with guaranteed rewards.

Purchase routes, editions and platform checks

The documented digital routes are Steam, the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and GeForce NOW. Check the storefront for your region and the specific edition before purchasing, especially if you intend to switch platforms later. The available platform information confirms the stores and editions but does not establish unrestricted cross-progression or every account-linking rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no PS4 version listed on the current PlayStation information. A player with older PlayStation hardware therefore needs a PS5 to use the console version. Likewise, a cloud player should confirm GeForce NOW compatibility and account requirements before assuming that a local installation is unnecessary.

Buying decision: a practical checklist

Your priority What ARC Raiders offers Verdict
Solo PvE against machines Solo entry, quests, crafting, skills and machine-focused objectives, but normally inside a shared PvPvE world. Buy if online PvP encounters are acceptable.
Permanent PvE-only matchmaking Only a time-limited October 13–20, 2026 test is documented; permanence was not promised. Wait for a formal permanent-mode announcement.
Offline campaign Online connection, Embark ID and a platform account are required. Not a match.
Co-op with friends Cross-platform social play and parties of up to three Raiders. Strong fit if your group accepts extraction risk.
Long-term progression Trader quests, blueprints, workshop stations, crafting, repairs, skill paths, Trials and leaderboards. Strong fit for systems-driven progression.
Hardware flexibility PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and GeForce NOW; no PS4 version. Check your platform and account setup first.

What to know before your first purchase and run

  • Set expectations around the word solo. You are alone in your party, not offline or protected from the shared player population.
  • Value extraction over maximum looting. Carrying more increases the potential payoff but also makes a failed run more costly.
  • Use quests to give each trip a purpose. Objectives help you decide which materials and locations matter instead of wandering until your inventory is full.
  • Invest in the workshop deliberately. Station upgrades and blueprints determine which weapons, gadgets and repairs you can sustain over time.
  • Choose a skill direction. Survival, mobility and conditioning support different approaches; spreading experience without a plan can delay the capabilities you value most.
  • Treat map conditions as part of the challenge. Weather, time of day, special conditions and enemy changes can alter a familiar route.
  • Do not buy on the assumption that the PvE toggle will return unchanged. The tested queue was explicitly not a promise of a permanent mode, and its lower loot value and excluded activities may not represent any future implementation.

Current reception and release context

Steam lists October 30, 2025 as the release date. On October 19, 2026, Steam showed 202,157 English-language user reviews with 81% positive, while 5,889 recent reviews were 70% positive. Those figures describe user sentiment at that access date, not a guarantee that the experience will suit a PvE-only preference.

The central buying question remains structural rather than numerical: are you willing to play an always-online extraction game where machine combat, progression and co-op are valuable precisely because another player may complicate the run? If yes, ARC Raiders supplies a substantial PvE layer. If no, its solo option and temporary PvE test do not replace the offline or permanent PvE campaign you are seeking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is ARC Raiders worth buying if I only play PvE?

Only if you can accept the normal PvPvE format. Solo play, ARC-machine combat, quests, crafting and progression are substantial, but human Raiders can share every standard run. The October 13–20, 2026 PvE toggle was temporary and was not promised as a permanent mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does ARC Raiders have a permanent PvE-only mode?

No permanent mode is established in the documented offering. Embark tested PvE matchmaking for one week, removed player damage and lowered loot value, then stated that the test was not a promise of a future permanent PvE queue.

Can I play ARC Raiders solo offline?

You can enter Topside alone, but the game is online and multiplayer-only. An internet connection, Embark ID and a platform account are required, so solo does not mean offline, pause-capable single-player play.

How many friends can join my party?

The supported party sizes are solo, duo and trio. Cross-play allows supported PlayStation, Xbox and PC players to socialize across platforms. A listed session population of up to 21 players is not a 21-person cooperative party.

Does ARC Raiders support cross-play?

Yes. The official site describes seamless social play across PlayStation, Xbox and PC, and Steam lists cross-platform multiplayer. The cited platform information does not fully guarantee unrestricted cross-progression, so verify account-linking rules before buying twice.

What platforms support ARC Raiders?

The documented platforms are Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and GeForce NOW. Current PlayStation information does not list a PS4 version.

How does progression work?

Extract resources to Speranza, build trader relationships, complete quests, sell or reuse loot, learn blueprints, craft weapons and gadgets, upgrade workshop stations, make field repairs and unlock skills across survival, mobility and conditioning. Trials and leaderboards add optional goals.

What happens to loot when a run fails?

Extraction is the condition that turns a haul into usable resources. A failed run can cost items carried in or gathered, which is why deciding when to leave is central to the game’s PvPvE tension.

Are all activities available in the PvE test?

No. Night Raids, Hidden Bunker, Locked Gate and Frigate conditions were excluded. The safer queue also reduced overall loot value, and PvPvE matchmaking rating was unaffected by those sessions.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy ARC Raiders for its online extraction loop, machine combat, crafting and progression—not for an offline campaign or a guaranteed permanent PvE queue. It is a reasonable choice for PvE-minded players who can tolerate occasional human opposition and the possibility of losing a haul. If you need completely safe, offline or permanently PvE-only play, wait for a formal mode announcement.
