Short answer: Apple’s 3 m Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable can make sense when you need Thunderbolt-class data and video over that distance, but the CT scans do not prove it is worth $159 compared with a similarly capable cable. Lumafield scanned Apple’s 1.8 m, $129 model—not the 3 m cable—and compared it with lower-capability USB-C cables, not a certified Thunderbolt competitor. The scans reveal sophisticated construction, not a real-world performance or durability advantage.

Which Apple cable costs $159?

The $159 product is Apple’s 3 m Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) Pro Cable, part number MW5H3AM/A, listed at that price in Apple’s US Education Institution Price List dated September 9, 2026. The same list gives the 1.8 m version a price of $129. These are dated US education-list prices; they do not establish the current standard retail price or availability.

“USB-C” describes the connector shape, not what a cable can do. Apple’s Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable supports up to 40 Gbps over Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, and USB 4, as well as HBR3 video and charging up to 100 W. Actual capability depends on the connected devices and their supported standards. Apple’s separate USB-C Charge Cable, by comparison, supports up to 480 Mbps and does not support video. Apple’s Thunderbolt Pro Cable specifications were published November 25, 2024.

What do the CT scans show inside the cable?

In an October 2023 article, industrial CT company Lumafield described scanning four USB-C cables. Its Apple sample was the 1.8 m Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable, then listed at $129—not the 3 m, $159 model. The scan shows a connector built to handle multiple signal and power demands, with construction features Lumafield says include:

Apple Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) Pro Cable (1.8 m)
  • Featuring a black braided design that coils without tangling, this 1.8-meter cable supports Thunderbolt 3, Thunderbolt 4, and USB 4 data transfer up to 40Gb/s, USB 3.1 Gen 2 data transfer up to 10Gb/s, DisplayPort video output (HBR3), and charging up to 100W.
  • Use this cable to connect a Mac with Thunderbolt 3 or 4 (USB-C) ports to Thunderbolt (USB-C) and USB displays and devices such as Studio Display, Pro Display XDR, docks, and hard drives.
  • You can daisy-chain up to six Thunderbolt 3 devices
  • Compatible with Studio Display, Pro Display, iPad and Mac
  • A stainless-steel shell bonded to the connector enclosure.
  • A single-piece strain relief crimped from eight directions.
  • Twenty-four pins mounted individually, connected to a dense multilayer board with blind and buried vias and carefully length-matched traces.
  • Separate shielded high-speed data conductors, power conductors, and legacy USB 2.0 data wires, with their shields and conductors terminating separately on the board.

Lumafield’s article is inconsistent about the board’s exact layer count: its summary says nine layers, while a caption describes a 10-layer PCBA. “Dense multilayer board with complex routing” is the defensible description; the precise layer count is not settled by that article. See Lumafield’s scan analysis.

These details help explain the engineering inside a cable designed for high-speed data, video, and power. They do not measure sustained transfer speed, signal errors, charging behavior, drop resistance, bend life, or service life. And because Lumafield scanned the shorter SKU, its images are not direct documentation of the internal construction of Apple’s 3 m version. ChargerLAB published a separate teardown of the 3 m cable; that is not a comparative CT test.

Do the scans prove Apple’s cable is worth the price?

No. They show that the scanned Apple cable has a sophisticated internal design, but they do not establish that it performs better, lasts longer, or offers better value than a similarly capable certified Thunderbolt cable. Lumafield itself acknowledged that its comparison with lower-capability USB-C cables did not answer whether Apple was worth its price against an equivalent Thunderbolt option. It had not scanned a like-for-like competitor comparison.

The scans do make one useful point: cables with the same USB-C plug can have very different capabilities and construction. Lumafield’s scanned Amazon Basics USB-C 2.0 cable was rated for up to 60 W and 480 Mbps, while its simpler construction was presented as appropriate for those limits. The scanned NiceTQ cable advertised 10 Gbps, but Lumafield observed that its four active conductors and pins supported only USB 2.0 at 480 Mbps. That was one discontinued sample—not evidence that inexpensive cables generally fail to meet their claims. Lumafield’s cable comparison details.

When should you buy the 3 m Apple cable?

Your requirement What to choose What to check
Thunderbolt-class data and video, with a 3 m reach Consider Apple’s 3 m Thunderbolt 4 Pro Cable if its price fits your budget. Confirm that the devices support the relevant Thunderbolt, USB 4, display, and charging capabilities you need; the cable’s stated maximums do not upgrade a less capable device.
Basic charging or USB 2.0 data A simpler USB-C cable may be sufficient. Check its specific data rate, charging limit, and whether it supports video. Apple’s USB-C Charge Cable, for example, is limited to 480 Mbps and has no video support.
Equivalent Thunderbolt capability, but $159 feels high Compare certified Thunderbolt alternatives rather than relying on this scan comparison. Compare verified price, length, supported charging wattage, warranty, and certified performance. The scan article does not identify the best-value alternative.

The practical question is not whether the Apple cable looks complex inside; it is whether you need its combination of reach, data, video, and power. If you do, its specifications may justify considering it. If your use is basic charging or USB 2.0 transfers, paying for Thunderbolt capability may not serve a purpose.
