Apple later documented on-device and server-based foundation models and announced a substantially upgraded Siri as part of Apple Intelligence. Separately, the Associated Press reported that Apple would use Google Gemini technology for Apple Intelligence. Apple has not publicly explained which model handles each Siri feature, so it is not established that the new Siri runs entirely on Apple models or entirely on Gemini.
What did the original report say about Apple’s LLM?
In July 2023, Bloomberg reported that Apple had built a framework called Ajax for creating large language models and an internal chatbot some engineers called “Apple GPT.” The report, which cited people familiar with the work, said Apple had not settled on a clear strategy for releasing those tools to consumers. Ajax and Apple GPT were names in attributed reporting—not public product names Apple confirmed in the sources reviewed. Bloomberg’s July 2023 report
Has Apple since confirmed that it develops its own models?
Yes. Apple’s public technical material describes its own foundation language models, including models designed for on-device use and larger models intended to run on servers through Private Cloud Compute. That makes Apple’s model-development work more than an unconfirmed report about Ajax, though it does not establish that every Siri feature uses an Apple model.
On-device and server models
Apple’s 2024 report described an on-device model of approximately 3 billion parameters and a larger server-based model. Its 2025 technical overview again described a compact on-device model of approximately 3 billion parameters and a server model based on a mixture-of-experts architecture. The parameter count describes model size; it is not a measure of consumer quality. Apple’s overview does not give a simple total-parameter figure for the server model. How Apple describes deployment and privacy
Apple describes its models as supporting on-device processing and server processing through Private Cloud Compute. These are Apple’s descriptions of its architecture; they do not, by themselves, show which model or processing route is used for a particular Siri request. The technical overview also discusses Apple’s developer framework for using its models.
What is changing with Siri?
At WWDC on June 8, 2026, Apple introduced Siri AI as a new Siri experience within Apple Intelligence. Apple says it can use personal context across apps, respond to questions about what is on screen, take actions across apps, and use the web for up-to-date information. Apple senior vice president of Software Engineering Craig Federighi called it “a profoundly more intelligent, knowledgeable, and capable Siri” in the announcement. That is Apple’s promotional description, not a measured finding about Siri’s performance.
Does the new Siri use Apple’s models or Google Gemini?
The public record points to both Apple-developed models and a reported Google relationship, but it does not reveal the exact division of work. In January 2026, the Associated Press reported that Apple would rely on Google Gemini technology for Apple Intelligence features, including Siri improvements. Apple’s own technical publications separately describe its foundation models. As a result, it would be inaccurate to describe Siri AI as wholly Apple-powered or wholly Gemini-powered based on these announcements. Apple has not published a feature-by-feature model-routing explanation in the sources cited here.

Apple says some features may vary by language and region. Its WWDC26 keynote said Siri AI would arrive in beta later in 2026 and would initially be unavailable in China while regulatory requirements were addressed, and on iOS and iPadOS in the EU. These were statements about the planned rollout, not confirmation of availability on October 4, 2026. What is still unknown?
- How Apple divides Siri AI tasks between its own foundation models and Google Gemini.
- Whether Gemini handles any particular feature or request in the announced Siri release.
- How Siri AI performs in independent testing after public release; the cited material does not provide such test results.
