Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey is a single-player game, not a co-op or online multiplayer title. You guide one hominid clan through exploration, births, neuronal learning, generation changes and evolutionary leaps. The journey begins roughly 10 million years ago and moves toward about 2 million years ago, with your discoveries and survival determining how quickly the lineage advances.
Is Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey multiplayer?
No. The official Xbox store listing labels the game’s capability “Single player,” and the official PlayStation listing specifies “1 player.” A Panache Digital Games developer AMA in 2020 also said that Ancestors was designed as a single-player experience and that the team had no intention of making it multiplayer at that time.
That means there is no documented cooperative mode in which a friend joins your clan, no shared online world and no local two-player campaign. You control the clan yourself, switching between individual hominids as the situation requires. Although the Steam store page includes “Multiplayer” among its discovery tags, that tag conflicts with the platform capability descriptions and the developer’s statement. It should not be treated as proof that a playable multiplayer mode exists.

What single-player means in practice
- Your clan, discoveries, births and evolutionary progress belong to one player’s save.
- You can control different clan members, but those characters are all part of your own lineage rather than separate player accounts.
- There is no documented way to invite a friend to control another hominid during an expedition.
- Progression is designed around managing a family over generations, not around leveling a permanent multiplayer character.
How the progression system works
Ancestors uses a lineage-based progression loop summarized by the developers as Explore, Expand, Evolve. You begin with a small hominid clan in Neogene Africa. Exploration reveals locations, resources and dangers. Expansion means building a larger, more resilient family through births and by keeping useful members alive. Evolution comes from developing neuronal abilities, completing feats and making permanent advances through evolutionary leaps.

This is different from a conventional role-playing game in which one hero earns experience points and keeps every skill forever. In Ancestors, progress is distributed between the current adults, their children and the lineage timeline. A decision that seems useful for one expedition may matter most after a generation change, when the clan’s learned abilities and mutations are carried forward.
| Progression element | What you do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exploration | Travel through the environment, locate landmarks, gather resources and encounter threats. | Discovery and survival can produce evolution feats and reveal safer or more productive areas. |
| Neuronal development | Learn and reinforce abilities in the Evolution menu. | It improves what clan members can do and builds knowledge that can be passed forward. |
| Births | Have children within the clan. | Children create the descendants needed for a continuing lineage and for inheritable mutations. |
| Generation changes | Move the clan to the next generation after preparing the current one. | Learned mutations become available to the next adults, while the family’s composition changes. |
| Evolutionary leaps | Convert qualifying accomplishments into permanent timeline progress. | They lock in advancement on the lineage timeline instead of leaving it as temporary preparation. |
Explore: how discoveries create progress
Exploration is not just travel between missions. It is the main way you uncover the experiences that the game counts as evolution feats. Community progression documentation identifies several kinds of accomplishments that can contribute: discovering locations, using tools, eating new foods, and surviving or defeating threats.
Discover locations
Move beyond familiar territory and investigate notable places. A new location can count as a feat and also expand the areas your clan understands. Exploration should be deliberate: take enough clan members to protect the group, but avoid exposing the entire lineage to a single danger. The game’s survival systems make the route you choose part of progression rather than a purely cosmetic decision.

Experiment with resources and tools
Trying unfamiliar foods and using objects in new ways can reveal neuronal opportunities and complete feats. Tool use is therefore both a practical survival technique and a source of evolutionary progress. When you find a new item, consider whether it can be handled, combined or used to solve an immediate problem before moving on.
Survive encounters
Threats can provide progress when the clan survives or defeats them, but risk has a direct cost. A dangerous encounter that kills an experienced adult can remove useful knowledge or reduce the clan’s ability to protect its young. Treat combat and defensive actions as calculated choices, not as the only route to advancement.

Expand: births, family structure and the next generation
Expansion is measured in descendants as well as territory. Births are required to create the next members of the lineage, and they provide the population needed to carry mutations into future generations. A clan with too few adults or children has less room for recovery when accidents occur.
Why births matter before a generation change
Generation changes do not simply refresh the same characters. They move the lineage forward, so you need descendants in place before making that transition. Having children gives the clan a future adult population and creates opportunities for mutations to be inherited. It also reduces the chance that one death leaves the lineage unable to continue.
Balance adults, children and risk
Adults are generally the members able to perform demanding exploration and tool work, while children represent the clan’s future. Taking every member into an unknown area may expose the entire family to one threat. Keeping a defensible home area and returning safely with discoveries lets you build knowledge without gambling the lineage on a single expedition.
Evolve: neuronal abilities, generations and permanent leaps
The Evolution menu connects three actions: neuronal development and reinforcement, generation changes, and evolutionary leaps. They are related, but they do different jobs. Understanding the order prevents a common mistake: treating a temporary preparation step as if it were already permanent timeline progress.
1. Develop and reinforce neuronal abilities
As you discover and practice behaviors, the clan can learn neuronal abilities. Steam’s description explains that players choose which attributes to learn and hone so knowledge can be passed to future generations. Spend development opportunities on abilities that match your clan’s immediate needs, such as safer movement, better resource handling or improved responses to threats.

Reinforcement matters because discovering an ability is not the same as making it dependable. Use the behavior during normal play so it becomes part of the clan’s practical knowledge. Keep track of which abilities are merely available and which have been strengthened enough to support the next stage of progression.

After creating children and developing the abilities you want to preserve, use the generation-change option in the Evolution menu. Community documentation describes this transition as the point at which learned mutations become available to the next adults. The new generation therefore represents a planned handoff: the current adults’ experience is converted into a foundation for their descendants.
Do not make the change immediately after every discovery. First check that the clan has births, that the desired abilities have been reinforced and that you are not abandoning an especially useful adult before the lineage is ready. A generation change is a strategic reset of the family, not a button that simply awards instant experience.
3. Complete an evolutionary leap
Evolutionary feats add years to the timeline, but an evolutionary leap makes qualifying progress permanent on the lineage timeline. Use the leap after you have accumulated the discoveries, tool use, food experiences and survival achievements that qualify. This is the point at which temporary progress becomes a lasting advance in the clan’s evolutionary history.
Do skills carry over when you change generations?
Knowledge can be passed to future generations, but the handoff is mediated by the game’s neuronal and mutation systems rather than by every individual character keeping an identical personal skill list. Learned mutations become available to the next adults when you perform a generation change, provided you have prepared the lineage and created descendants to receive them.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That distinction explains why births, reinforcement and generation changes belong to one progression cycle. Learning an ability gives the clan something to preserve; having children creates the descendants; changing generations makes the prepared mutations available to the new adult group. If you skip the family-building step or leave an ability insufficiently developed, the transition may not produce the result you expected.
How evolutionary leaps move the timeline
The game starts approximately 10 million years ago and progresses toward approximately 2 million years ago, following major stages in hominid evolution described in the 2019 launch materials from Panache Digital Games and Private Division. The historical comparison is a framework for the journey, not a fixed-speed calendar.
| Timeline point | Meaning in the game |
|---|---|
| About 10 million years ago | The starting point for the clan’s lineage journey. |
| About 2 million years ago | The approximate destination described for the evolutionary span. |
Your clan can move faster or slower than the real-world evolutionary comparison shown by the game. Discoveries, successful survival and completed feats influence the pace, while deaths and lost opportunities can slow or reduce progress. The timeline therefore reflects how effectively you manage the lineage, not a real-time simulation that advances at a uniform rate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What happens when a clan member dies?
Deaths can reduce progress, which makes clan safety a central part of advancement. Losing one hominid may remove a capable explorer, a parent, or a member carrying useful learned mutations. A death during a dangerous expedition can also leave children or less experienced adults without adequate protection.
Ways to limit the damage
- Explore gradually instead of sending the entire clan into unknown territory at once.
- Return to a defensible area after completing a discovery or collecting a new resource.
- Build the clan through births before committing to a risky generation change.
- Reinforce important abilities during ordinary activities so knowledge is not dependent on one specialist.
- Use threats as opportunities only when the likely evolutionary benefit justifies the danger to the lineage.
A death is not merely a failed combat encounter. It can change which abilities, mutations and family relationships are available for the next generation. Safe planning is therefore as important as discovering new feats.

A practical progression plan
- Start with a small exploration objective. Learn the immediate surroundings and identify resources, landmarks and possible threats before traveling far.
- Record useful discoveries through play. Try new foods, investigate locations and test objects that can become tools.
- Return safely. A completed discovery is more valuable when the clan survives to use the knowledge.
- Develop neuronal abilities. In the Evolution menu, choose attributes that support the activities your clan is actually performing.
- Reinforce those abilities. Repeat the relevant behaviors so the knowledge is prepared for inheritance rather than left as a one-time experiment.
- Create descendants. Have children before changing generations so the lineage has adults to inherit prepared mutations.
- Change generations deliberately. Use the generation option after checking that births, abilities and clan safety are in a suitable state.
- Secure permanent progress. Once enough feats qualify, perform an evolutionary leap to fix the advancement on the lineage timeline.
- Repeat with greater reach. Use the new generation’s abilities to explore farther, handle more resources and survive additional threats.
Common questions about multiplayer and progression
Can I play the campaign co-op with a friend?
No documented co-op mode appears in the official platform capability listings. The game is presented as single-player/one-player, so a friend cannot take control of another clan member through a supported multiplayer feature.
Why does Steam show a multiplayer tag?
Steam’s discovery tags include “Multiplayer,” but that label conflicts with the official Xbox and PlayStation capability descriptions and the developer’s 2020 statement. The official listings are the relevant evidence for whether the game provides a playable multiplayer mode.
Is progression based on one character’s level?
No. Progression is lineage-based. Individual hominids contribute to a clan whose knowledge, descendants, mutations and evolutionary leaps shape the timeline across generations.
Does fighting provide all the advancement?
No. Combat and surviving threats are only part of the feat system. Discovering locations, using tools and eating new foods can also produce evolutionary feats, so exploration and experimentation are equally important.
Is the journey locked to a historical pace?
No. The game frames its journey between roughly 10 million and 2 million years ago, but your clan’s discoveries and survival determine how quickly it advances relative to that comparison.
