Yes. You can download free ASIO drivers for Windows, including ASIO4ALL and Steinberg’s built-in ASIO Driver. If you own an audio interface with a manufacturer-provided ASIO driver, try that driver first: it is made for the hardware and is the option Steinberg recommends. A free download does not guarantee compatibility or a particular latency on every computer.
What “free ASIO” means for Windows users
ASIO (Audio Stream Input/Output) is an audio-driver interface used by compatible recording and audio applications. The available choices differ: ASIO4ALL and Steinberg’s built-in driver are universal Windows options, while an audio-interface maker’s driver is specific to its hardware.
Steinberg’s October 15, 2025 announcement changed ASIO technology licensing to a dual proprietary and open-source model for developers and distributors. That licensing change is separate from whether an end user can download and use the drivers described here; it does not say users must pay for ASIO4ALL or Steinberg’s built-in driver. Choose based on your hardware and application
If you have an audio interface with a native driver
Check the interface manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and operating system, then install its latest ASIO driver. Steinberg’s guidance is: “In general, it is recommended to use the latest ASIO driver provided by the manufacturer of the audio hardware in use.”

If your hardware lacks a suitable native ASIO driver
Try ASIO4ALL or Steinberg’s built-in ASIO Driver if the Windows version and hardware match the option’s stated requirements. ASIO4ALL is the general universal option; Steinberg positions its built-in driver as an alternative for unsupported interfaces or integrated sound chips. Check that your DAW or audio application supports ASIO and can select the chosen driver.
If you use macOS
These Windows ASIO drivers are not the relevant choice on a Mac. Steinberg says its ASIO driver is unnecessary on macOS because Apple’s Core Audio provides the audio layer.

Install and select a driver in your audio application
- Identify your hardware and Windows version. For an interface, look up its exact model on the manufacturer’s support page and check whether a native driver is available for your Windows edition.
- Install the appropriate driver. Use the manufacturer’s driver for supported hardware. If there is no suitable native option, download a universal driver from its official site and confirm your Windows version meets the listed requirements.
- Choose the driver in your DAW or audio application. In ASIO4ALL’s documented setup, select “ASIO -> ASIO4ALL v2” in the application’s audio-device settings. For another driver, select its name in the corresponding ASIO device list.
- Check that the application sees the intended inputs and outputs. If the device is missing or does not work reliably, consult the driver and hardware documentation; a universal driver is not guaranteed to work with every device or application.
What to expect for latency and compatibility
Neither free availability nor the word “ASIO” guarantees a particular performance result. The official information cited here gives no universal latency figure, benchmark, or assurance that either universal driver will outperform Windows audio on a particular computer. Results depend on the hardware, driver implementation, application, and buffer size. Test the settings in your own recording or playback workflow rather than relying on a promised millisecond improvement.
Steinberg describes its built-in driver as an alternative when hardware drivers cause difficulties, and notes that third-party software support is limited. If you need dependable support for a specific interface, the manufacturer’s native driver is the more directly supported starting point.
