The available pregame evidence does not confirm who took the opening snap.
Who was Syracuse’s expected starting quarterback against UConn?
Syracuse coach Fran Brown named Steve Angeli the team’s starting quarterback on August 24, 2026, ahead of the season opener. The university’s announcement described Odom as part of the depth behind Angeli. Syracuse Athletics’ announcement also said Angeli had been cleared without restrictions during training camp after a season-ending injury the previous season.
The independent Ourlads Syracuse depth chart, updated September 30, lists the quarterbacks in this order:
- Steve Angeli
- Amari Odom
- Malachi Nelson
A contemporary Yahoo Sports report said Brown planned to start Angeli against UConn and also use Odom. That report supports the expected plan, but the official starter announcement and the later depth chart are the clearer evidence for the quarterback order.

Does that confirm who took the first snap?
No. The evidence establishes Syracuse’s announced starter and expected Week 5 plan, not the identity of the quarterback who actually opened the game. The supplied game-day live-score result did not establish the opening snap, so it would be inaccurate to describe Angeli—or Odom—as the confirmed in-game starter on that basis.
When and where was the Week 5 game?
Syracuse was scheduled to play UConn in Storrs on October 3, 2026, at noon Eastern. The Syracuse schedule and the ACC schedule list the matchup. The available timestamp for this answer, October 3 at 16:16:59 UTC, was just after the scheduled 16:00 UTC kickoff; it does not provide a record of who took the first snap.
