AI may assist Mondelēz with some product formulation, but public evidence does not show that AI designed any specific Oreo flavor. The company describes AI as one tool in a development process that still involves people; Oreo’s documented flavor work includes trend research, lab samples, team tastings and consumer feedback.
What does AI do in Mondelēz product development?
Mondelēz has described an AI product development process used in some formulation work across its business. That is not the same as an AI independently inventing a cookie and sending it to stores. The company’s Global Media Relations Manager, Desiree Battaglia, told FoodNavigator in March 2025: “We do not, strictly speaking, launch ‘AI recipes’.” She added that recipes reaching market after going through the process had “a human touch throughout the process.”
Fast Company reported in December 2024 that Mondelēz had used the tool in more than 70 product-development projects, including work ranging from gluten-free Oreos to changes to Chips Ahoy. The report also said the company does not identify every product that used the tool. That supports a company-wide account of AI-assisted development, but it does not identify an AI-designed Oreo flavor.
What the reported speed figures mean
FoodNavigator relayed Mondelēz’s claims that its process can be two to five times faster than traditional methods and can take two to 10 weeks, depending on project complexity. These are company-reported estimates in secondary reporting, not independent controlled measurements. They should not be read as a timeline or performance guarantee for every product or for an Oreo launch.

How Oreo flavors are developed
A Mondelēz employee interview describes the limited-edition Oreo process as an iterative collaboration between Marketing, R&D and suppliers. Teams look for trends and flavor profiles, R&D makes lab samples, and colleagues taste and critique them. Adjusted samples may be made before selected candidates are taken to consumer focus groups. The team then proposes a launch calendar to internal leadership. The interview also describes tracking sell-through, changes in share, social-media impressions and revenue when evaluating launches.
That account helps explain why a flavor idea is not the same as a finished product: recipes are developed and revised, then assessed with people and business considerations before a launch decision. It is consistent with Mondelēz’s statement that human involvement remains part of its AI-supported work, though it does not establish that AI was used in any named Oreo flavor.

What recent Oreo releases show—and what they don’t
Three U.S. limited editions announced for 2026
In an August 13, 2026 release, Oreo said Banana Pudding, Deep Fried and Chicken & Waffles limited editions would begin rolling out to U.S. retailers on August 24. The brand described the flavors as developed in response to evolving snacking trends and called the R&D insights-driven. It did not say that AI created any of the three.
- Banana Pudding: banana and vanilla pudding creme between vanilla wafers.
- Deep Fried: fried-dough-flavored cookies with dark chocolate and fried-dough creme.
- Chicken & Waffles: waffle-textured cookies with a sweet-and-savory, chicken-and-maple-inspired flavor.
The release said the brand’s vote on the three flavors ran from August 17 through October 12, 2026, with the winner due to be announced October 13 and return to the 2027 lineup for a limited time. As of October 4, 2026, the vote was still open. These are U.S. dates and availability; retailer stock and local availability can vary.

A collaboration shaped by human choices
For a separate global collaboration, Mondelēz said in September 2026 that its teams explored dozens of ideas after studying South Korean street-food culture, and BTS selected hotteok, a warm brown-sugar pancake flavor. BTS also influenced package design and cookie embossments. The company described coordinating R&D across markets with different regulations, suppliers, ingredients and production lines. The Associated Press reported development took around two years and narrowed the possibilities to three before the team settled on hotteok. This example shows collaboration and judgment in flavor development; it is not evidence that AI chose the flavor.

- AI-assisted formulation: a tool helps explore or refine recipes. That is the level of use Mondelēz has described.
- A named flavor was AI-designed: this stronger claim needs evidence linking a specific retail recipe to the AI process. The public reporting cited here does not provide that link for any named Oreo flavor.
- A product reached shelves: a proposed formula still has to pass through human development and launch decisions. Mondelēz says people were involved throughout for recipes that went through its process and reached market.
For the three 2026 U.S. flavors, the brand’s announcement credits evolving snacking trends and insights-driven R&D, not AI. The company’s broader AI disclosures do not fill that gap. The most accurate description is therefore that AI is part of Mondelēz’s wider product-development toolkit, while the recipe-level role for particular Oreo flavors has not been publicly established.
