Sometimes. A used iPhone may still have time left on Apple’s limited warranty, and an existing AppleCare plan may transfer to a new owner—but eligibility depends on the plan, payment arrangement, and region. Check the specific iPhone with Apple and confirm any AppleCare transfer before you buy; a seller’s claim alone does not establish coverage.
What coverage can a used iPhone have?
There are two separate possibilities: remaining time on Apple’s limited warranty and an active AppleCare plan. The warranty clock is based on the phone’s original retail purchase date, not the date it was resold. AppleCare is a separate service plan with its own term and transfer conditions.
Apple’s limited warranty
Apple’s U.S. iOS Warranty Document covers qualifying defects in materials and workmanship for one year from the original retail purchase by the end-user purchaser. Resale does not restart that period. This is the U.S. warranty term; warranty terms and statutory consumer rights can differ elsewhere. Read Apple’s U.S. iOS Warranty Document and check the terms applicable to your country or region.
The limited warranty is not general protection against damage. Apple’s U.S. document excludes, among other things, ordinary wear, cosmetic damage, accidental or liquid damage, and damage caused by unauthorized service.

AppleCare
AppleCare is separate from the limited warranty. Apple describes AppleCare+ as providing additional hardware service and technical support, including accidental-damage incidents for covered devices. Benefits, limits, and eligibility depend on the applicable plan terms; an AppleCare listing should not be treated as proof that a particular phone is covered.
Can AppleCare transfer to a new owner?
Sometimes. Apple says transfer is not available for some plans and in some regions. Monthly or annual plans linked to an Apple Account cannot be transferred under Apple’s support guidance. Apple’s North America AppleCare+ terms allow a one-time transfer for qualifying plans paid in full, subject to required documents, notice, and the new owner’s acceptance of the plan terms. Confirm the rules for the specific plan and region with Apple’s AppleCare plan transfer guidance and the applicable AppleCare+ terms.

Before relying on a transfer, ask the seller for the plan confirmation and original sales receipt. Contact Apple Support with the plan details to confirm eligibility, required steps, and whether any payment obligations continue. Do not assume that an active plan on the seller’s account automatically becomes yours.
How to check a used iPhone before buying
- Ask the seller for the iPhone’s serial number and check it using Apple’s coverage checker.
- If you can inspect the phone, open Settings > General > AppleCare & Warranty and compare the displayed information with the seller’s claim.
- If AppleCare is claimed, request the plan confirmation and original receipt, then confirm the transfer process for that exact plan with Apple Support.
- Compare the coverage information and any stated expiration with the seller’s description. Do not infer coverage from the iPhone’s age or model.
- If you are considering buying AppleCare after purchase, check the options Apple shows for that specific device and region before paying.
Apple’s general enrollment guidance describes adding AppleCare+ within 60 days of purchasing a new Apple device, but that does not establish that a used device or its new owner qualifies. Check Apple’s AppleCare enrollment guidance and the device-specific coverage options.

Apple warranty and AppleCare coverage are distinct from protection a seller or retailer may provide, and from rights under local consumer law. Those protections depend on the transaction and jurisdiction; Apple’s U.S. warranty document does not determine them.
