Yes—if you mean compatibility. The Steam listing says Gears of War: E-Day is “Fully optimized for handheld play on Steam Deck, Xbox Ally X, and Xbox Ally devices.” That makes a PC handheld an officially supported way to play, but it is not a promise of a particular frame rate, resolution, battery life, or graphics setting on any model. If you are buying a handheld specifically for this game, wait for current tests of the retail build on the model you plan to use.
What “optimized for handheld” means here
Steam’s listing names Steam Deck, Xbox Ally X, and Xbox Ally devices as handhelds for which the game is optimized. This is the clearest published confirmation that the game is intended to work on those devices. It does not provide model-by-model performance results. The listing therefore answers “Can I play it?” more confidently than “Will it run smoothly at settings I like?” Steam store listing.
Xbox lists the game for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and Steam. Early access began October 1, 2026, and Xbox announced worldwide launch for October 6, 2026; those dates were current as of October 3, 2026. What is not established about handheld performance
Official handheld-optimization wording is not the same as a benchmark. The cited official pages do not give comparable results for Steam Deck, Xbox Ally X, or Xbox Ally covering frame rate, resolution, graphics settings, battery runtime, heat, or fan noise. Avoid treating “optimized” as evidence that every model holds a specific frame rate or runs for a particular number of hours.

Xbox says the PC version uses Unreal Engine 5 and DirectX 12 and supports hardware ray tracing and, on compatible hardware, DLSS 4.5, AMD FSR, Unreal Engine TSR, and Intel XeSS. These features describe the PC version’s technology options; they do not establish how well a particular handheld performs. Xbox’s PC technology announcement.
How to decide whether a handheld suits you
The right choice depends on more than whether the game launches. Before buying, look for current retail-build testing on your exact model and weigh the following:

- Local performance: Check frame-rate stability, resolution, and graphics settings together. A headline frame rate without its settings and game version is not enough to judge the experience.
- Screen and controls: Consider readability and comfort during longer sessions, plus whether the controls suit a cover-based third-person shooter and any online play you expect.
- Battery, heat, and noise: Seek measured gameplay runtime and operating conditions rather than extrapolating from a device’s general battery claims.
- Storage: Check the current store listing for installation requirements and leave room for updates; do not assume a game size from older coverage.
- Play route: Decide whether you want to install and render the game locally or use supported cloud gaming. Streaming shifts the workload but makes play dependent on network quality and service eligibility.
Local play versus cloud gaming
Xbox identifies Game Pass Ultimate cloud gaming and GeForce NOW as options for playing the game. These may be alternatives when local handheld performance is not satisfactory, but availability depends on the service, device, region, account or subscription terms, and network conditions. Confirm those details for your location and device before relying on cloud play. A cloud stream also depends on a suitable connection, so it is not a guaranteed substitute for local play in every setting.

E-Day is a third-person shooter and an origin story set fourteen years before the original Gears of War. Xbox describes a solo campaign, online co-op, Horde Siege PvE, and Versus PvP. Its product information says online campaign co-op and other multiplayer features require a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer; two-player split-screen is console-only. A handheld is therefore a portable way to play, not a route to handheld split-screen. Xbox’s September 17 product and PC specifications announcement.

Verdict by situation
- You already own a Steam Deck, Xbox Ally X, or Xbox Ally: The Steam listing provides official support wording for these devices. Check model-specific retail-build performance if frame rate, visual quality, or battery life is important to you.
- You are choosing a handheld mainly for E-Day: Do not choose on the optimization label alone. Compare current tests for the exact model and consider whether its compromises in settings, battery, screen, and controls fit how you play.
- You are comfortable with cloud gaming: Xbox lists cloud options, but confirm eligibility and test your connection before treating streaming as your primary plan.
